Text ’’Job for Life’’

The Queen is the official Head of State and, for many people, a symbol of the unity of the nation. She is the Head of the Commonwealth, the Head of the Church of England, and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces.

The Queen is one of the richest women in the world and she gets about 8 million pounds a year to be the queen. On the other hand her power is limited by the fact that so many of her expenses are paid for by government money. Parliament has had effective control of the monarch’s finances since the 17 th century. There are hundreds of traditional ceremonies which the Queen has to keep. Every year in October there is the State Opening of Parliament.

The Queen, wearing her crown, arrives at the Houses of Parliament by carriage. She reads the queen’s speech. Another traditional ceremony takes place on Thursday before Easter Sunday. The Queen out purses of money to older people who have done good work.

Every summer she gives three or more garden parties at the palace. About 8000 guests come to each party.

The Queen often travels abroad. She meets important visitors. Once a week she has a meeting with a Prime Minister. Any law, made by the Parliament, really becomes a law only if the Queen agrees to it. But no king or queens has refused a new law since 1701.

The hereditary principle still operates and the Crown is passed on to the sovereign’s .eldest son (or daughter if there is no sons).

Many people agree that the Queen does her job well and she deserves her salary.
