You know, when television arrived, many people predicted that radio would disappear. They were wrong. Since the arrival of television, radio audiences have increased, and radio now has more listeners than ever before. I think that radio has become the most important media for music.

What do you think, when do people listen to the radio nowadays?

Do you often listen to the radio?

When do you use the Internet?

What do you use it for?

Now, it`s time to relax. I want to show you the presentation of Dali`s paintings. Do nothing, please, just relax.

Of course, we can hardly imagine our life without TV. Read the text. Match each paragraph with one of the headings A-F below. There is only one paragraph to one of the headings. One heading is extra.

Please, think and tell me: Who are teenagers? Look at the picture. Here are three groups of people: kids, young people and grown-ups”

What is the situation with the newspapers in Russia nowadays? There are so many editions that it is impossible to count them. Dailies, weeklies, monthlies are at your disposal. There are 'quality' newspapers, which publish serious articles, dedicated to politics and economics. There are also the so called 'tabloids', where you can find very few news items, but a lot of pictures, entertainment, personalities and crime stories. You can subscribe to some newspapers, others you can only buy (at news-stands). There are also newspapers which are distributed free in the streets or dropped into mail-boxes. A lot of people have stopped subscribing to newspapers. Some of them can't afford it any more, some of them try to avoid the stress they can get reading newspapers and some are satisfied with television.

Nowadays there is a fierce competition among the newspapers. They organise all kinds of lotteries, prize contests, tours and so on to attract as many readers as possible. A special question is that of financial support of the press. The newspapers are no longer supported by the state, so they have to look for financial backers and publish a lot of advertisements.

So, teenagers are young people, 13-19 years of age. Just like you are. Please, tell me, what is important for you? What plays a great role in your life?”

School, love, friends, parents, hobbies, independence, sport, pets, pocket money, understanding” и т.д.

The Internet: FAQs

(Frequently Asked questions)

The Internet is without doubt one of the most important inventions in history. It was started in 1968 by the US government, but at first it was used mainly by scientists. Since 1990 when the World Wide Web was created, it has changed the world, and its uses are growing every day.

The Internet is a network (several networks, in fact) of millions of computers around the world, connected by phone lines, satellite or cable, so that all the computers on the net can exchange information with each other.

Not quite. The Internet links computers, and the World Wide Web is a system which links the information stored inside these computers.

A company or organization stores its information in electronic documents on one of the Internet computers, somewhere in the world. This computer space – the company’s web site – has an address, in the same way that every telephone has a number. To visit a web site, you simply enter the address. Your computer is connected to the web site, a document is downloaded, and a page appears on your computer screen.

When you visit a web site looking for information, some words on the page may be underlined, showing that there is more information about the subject in another document. If you click on one of these words, the Web automatically connects your computer to a new document or web site, even if this is stored thousands of kilometers away. You’re surfing the net!

The main use of the Internet is to find information – for your schoolwork or job, or just to find out more about your hobbies, sports or current events. You can also use the Internet to read newspapers and magazines, play games, plan your holiday or buy things from your favourite shop. E – mail makes it possible to send electronic messages anywhere in the world in seconds, and you can use the Internet to ‘chat’ with people and make new friends.

If you don’t already use the Internet, all you need to get started is a computer, a modem and a phone line. Using the Internet is getting cheaper and easier all the time.

Are you ready to surf the Net? There’s a whole exciting Internet world out there waiting for you.

T.: Listen to what British teenagers, Ben and Sue, say about the Internet and its role in their life.

1) Ex.1.1) p. 80 (Student’s Book)

Do Ben and Sue value the Internet more than other medium?

2) Ex.1.2) p. 81 (Student’s Book)

What arguments in favour and against the Internet do Ben and Sue give? Which of their arguments can be given about the other mass media?

The Internet is absolutely marvelous! On the Internet I can search for information on anything I like. In comparison with the radio and television there is much more information I can find online. If compared to magazines, for example, the Information on the Internet is updated more often! I use the Internet for homework and for research. The Internet is much more interactive while the radio and the press are just boring! On the Internet you can connect with the whole world! I for one can talk to my overseas friends because I have my own e-mail address. I can also play games, find out the latest news or read about films, sport or celebrities. The Internet has more fun than any other medium. The Internet is definitely better! It has everything you can get from the press, television or the radio and much more!

I’m afraid I have to disagree with the people who say that the Internet is better than any other medium. Yes, okay, it’s good but if we never read books, magazines or newspapers, if we do not watch TV or listen to the radio the world wouldn’t be that great a place! The Internet is wonderful if you search for information. It is useful for homework and revision as well. I think the Internet is great for a research. But… newspapers or magazines can’t stop working suddenly… Plus, there is something special about getting a magazine you really wanted. What can be better than sitting down with it and reading it in peace and quiet? Also, if I stare at the computer screen for too long, it hurts my eyes!

3) Ex.1.3) p. 81(Student’s Book)

Listen to Ted’s opinion. What other arguments for the Internet and other media does Ted give? (listening for detail/note taking).

4) Ex.1. 4) p. 81(Student’s Book)

Whose arguments do you find more convincing? Why?

I think that …’ s arguments were most convincing. He/she said that…

But I have to disagree with … who said that…

T.: What do YOU think of the Internet? What medium could YOU not live without? Compare it with the other media.

Ex. 2, 3 p. 81(Student’s Book)

I am a big fan of …

I think I couldn’t live without …

As well as … … but …

Web pages with photographs, music and video make downloading slow and boring.

The latest information is available to you at any time, quickly and easily.

On-line shopping can save you time and money.

With so much information, finding what you want can take hours.

You can share your hobbies and special interests with newsgroups and chat groups.

There is too much advertising instead of real information.

You can make new friends in chat groups.

Making ‘chat friends’ is not the same as actually meeting people.

You can send mail fast and cheaply.
