Our world is giant and various and there are its own traditions in every corner of the world. Discovering these traditions is very interesting and fruitful, but there are many contradictions about it.

I satisfy myself, communicating with my friend, who lives in Atlanta, Georgia. We imagine Americans as people who like to eat very much and who are not well-educated, and they are easy-going. That’s so because our cultures are different from each other.

For instance, we took from the American culture network of fast food restaurants, although Americans at the same time try not to go the fast food restaurants.

There are many films in the Russian video hire for the average spectator, but it is so because many people will go to the cinema to watch them. I thought the same until I made friends with that American girl. She seemed to me well-educated and I can say that she had no such traits of character that we used to seek in Americans. She has another viewpoint of

She lives in a two-storey house and she can’t understand how people live in a two-roomed flat. She is also surprised that the Russian authors are liked in America but not liked in Russia. She is amazed that Russians can’t understand Dostoevsky’s books that are popular and famous among Americans.

So we see that Americans mention such things from what people in Russia refused.

At the same time Russian and American young adults are familiar to each other because we read the same books and watch the same films. Probably that’s why it is not so difficult to communicate with her.

We “met” on the Internet and we discussed the samebook that we read. We found out that our points of view are not so different from each other. She doesn’t think that she is much different from her American friends.

And I made conclusion that we shouldn’t believe stereotypes and Americans are also surprised when they get to know that there are not an eternal winter and there are no bears in the streets.

What is the difference between a Belarusian and a Russian, a Ukrainian or a Pole? Of course, the mentality.

To make up a “portrait” of a typical Belarusian we should say that first of all Belarusians are peaceful people

One of the characteristic features of the Belarusians is endless kindness. The Belarusian will cover a table for you with a lot of dishes (even if he does not have money), he will always help and is ready to “give the last shirt” if you really need it.

Belarusian people aretolerant . It does not matter what color of your skin is, what kind of god you believe in and where you came from. You will be accepted as you are. Belarusians are hardworking .Belarusians are very industrious people. This is not surprising, since from childhood young Belarusians cultivate responsibility and accuracy to their work.

People of Belarus are patriotic. Despite many difficulties, most Belarusians continue to love and appreciate their country. 79% said they are proud of Belarus and their nationality.

Belarusians are neat. The Belarusian cities are clean and well-kept like in Europe Belarusians are religious, but not in the typical sense of the word. Thanks to an intricate history, Belarus has become a multi-religious country

Belarusian people are faithful to traditions. Kolyady, Radonitsa, Kupalle, Dozhinki and much more these are unique Belarusian holidays. As for the language, there is a stereotype that the Belorussians have completely abandoned their native language and you can hear it only at the lessons of the Belarusian language in school. This is not quite true: of course, in large cities, Belarusians often use Russian for communication, but in small cities a huge number of people continue to talk either exclusively in Belarusian or its dialects.

Would you like to visit Great Britain? Why or why not?

If I had a chance to go to London I'd like to see not only the places of interest but many other interesting things there.

Certainly everyone knows that the most famous sights of the capital of the Great Britain are Tower Bridge over the river Themes, Big Ben, The Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square, Saint Paul's Cathedral, The British museum, Art Gallery.

Or I'll try to feel myself as a real Englishman visiting a house of a common English family.

I'd like to sit round the fireplace which is traditional for every English house.

If I were lucky I would visit one of the competition or a tournament where traditional English sport games are played : rugby or lawn tennis, horse racing or cricket.

I'd like to walk among the students of Cambridge or Oxford university in their campus and to imagine that I am one of them.

I believe my impression on London won't be full if I don't visit Madam Tussad's museum in Baker street.

One of my evenings in London I'd like to spend in a disco club to watch the way English teenagers and young people spare their time, to listen to their popular groups, to make friends and what not.

Ask the British teenager what the British are like?

Advice a British teenager on what gifts to bring from Belarus for his friends.

What to bring from Belarus? What souvenirs can be found only here and nowhere else in the world?

Belarus has long been famous for its linen fabrics, unique products made of straw, clay and wood, valenki (felt boots) and hats made of sheepskin.

In Belarus flax has been cultivated since ancient times. Flax fibers were used to make fabrics, clothes, beautiful household items, toys for children. So you can buy linen clothes, tablecloths decorated with embroidery, table napkins, bath towels.

Belarusian grew fond of straw for its beauty and warmth. So straw figuries of animals and birds, flowers, hats, dolls and amulets, boxes and chests, pictures made of straw will be a nice present from Belarus.

Unique ceramics workshops have existed in different regions of Belarus from ancient times. Figures of animals and birds (European bison, beaver, stork), hand bells, magnet souvenirs, ceramic crockery are nice souvenirs from Belarus.

You can also bring:
Wooden Souvenirs (wooden boxes and chests, figures of people, animals birds.)

Valenki and Hats

Crystal and Glass

And Belarusian Candies and Sweets for example (zephyr, marmalade, chocolate by Krasny Pischevik, Kommunarka and Spartak.

Every nationality has stereotypes. What is your opinion?

National stereotypes have been the subject of many jokes for centuries. Even today when the international community promotes diversity and tolerance, certain people are still tagged according to their nationalities.

Some national stereotypes may provoke racism. To others, national stereotypes are harmless jokes.

But is there truth in these national stereotypes? Or are they just untrue notions, which can be pretty offensive to many people?

If to speak about different nationalities there are popular stereotypes connected with them. For example^

Italians are bad workers.

Canadians are boring.

Filipinos are uneducated island people.

Indians are poor, narrow-minded, conservative people.

The British are violently mad soccer freaks.

Spaniards are lazy.

The Irish are drunkards.

The Chinese eat anything that moves.

The French are arrogant.

But we should accept that mankind is a mixture of fine, unique individuals with different ways of living life. We should avoid branding a certain nationality with a negative notion for it can be offensive and dangerous. But maybe for some of us, they are stereotypes for a reason. Maybe there’s some truth in it. Maybe it applies to some people. But the problem with stereotypes is that they tend to generalize.

Remember that a person is judged not according to his race and definitely not his nationality. Humanity is defined by how good we have been to ourselves and other people, not by the country we live in.

A nation is a group of people who share common history and usually a language and usually, but not always, live in the same area. Culture can be described as our everyday life: how we communicate, what makes us happy and sad. It also includes our language, religion, traditions, behavior, way of life – in other words, what we do each day. People that belong to various nations may differ and they always differ from one another.

For example, the Germans are regarded as scientifically-minded and industrious, they're always considered solid, intelligent and mathematical. And, for instance, Israeli are believed to be mercenary, industrious, shrewd, loyal to family, religious.

There is a big amount of examples we can list about national character of different people. Proving the difference of the national stereotypes I want to compare Russian and English nations. There are a lot of features that vary.

The Russians are industrious, tough, brave, progressive and suspicious. They are always considered to be nationalistic, over - patriotic (because of this reason they're good soldiers), we are willing to respect opinion of other people.

Speaking about Englishmen I may note that they're reserved, tradition-loving, courteous, honest, extremely nationalistic and etc. To my mind, they have a specific sense of humor. They say that they can't understand our jokes and anecdotes not only because of the different meanings of the words, but because of their humor is more delicate.

Looking at these features of the Russians and the Englishmen it is not hard to mark out the differences. The Englishmen are reserved, but the Russians are open-hearted and communicative. The Englishmen are tradition-loving and the Russians, to my mind, don't keep their traditions in such a degree.

There is a great majority of factors that influence the nations stereotype and its people's character. People that live in the southern countries have less problems than those who live in the North and because of this they're more cheerful and artistic.

The history also has a great influence on the national character. The peoples in Asia are revengeful because their forefathers often were at war with others. In Africa many countries were colonies of the Great Britain, Holland, Spain and so on and they (Africans) were the slaves and because of this they're still hard-working and industrious.

The National Character exists. It is not a myth, it's a reality. But the National Character doesn't describe the character of every person, it describes the character of people of nation in general. Every person has its own character, but according to the person's belonging to some nation many traits of character are similar and these features may be explained as the national character.

Russia is a big and popular country. People all over the world know our country, history, films, songs and cuisine. But I am not sure that everything people are speaking about us is true. There are many things are spoken about us and it’s not so or not really so,

First of all not all Russian people drink alcohol. Vodka is Russian drink but we are not alcoholics like Americans show us in the movies. During lunch or dinner we can have some wine or beer, but we are not so much crazy. And I feel so bad that foreigners think we are so.

Another stereotype about us is that Russia is a cold country. We have four seasons and winter is cold here. Maybe 20-30 years ago it was really frosty and snowy here, but now the weather is not so bad. In some places there is a lot of snow. But basically we have less snow in winter every year. Maybe in 10-20 years we will not see snow at all.

Some foreigners think that Russian people are angry and aggressive. In American movies we are always bad characters. We are with guns, don’t want to talk and don’t have friends. We always look for some benefit and so on. It is not true. We are completely different, we are friendly and peaceful people.

Also many foreigners call different nationalities Russian. So for them all people from Soviet Union are the same. I am not agree. We are different countries with different languages, cultures and mentality. Yes we speak the same language, but it doesn’t mean all of us are Russian. The USA and Great Britain also speak the same language.

In general there are many stereotypes about us and our country. Some of them are funny, some are silly. But I am pretty sure we still don’t know what else other people speak about us.

A stereotype is a fixed set of ideas that is generally held about the characteristics of a particular type of person which are wrongly believed to be shared by all the people of that type. In my opinion it is a dangerous thing to judge about a people or a group of people by existing stereotypes but nevertheless a certain stereotype does exist. There are experimental ways of investigating stereotypes. One of the most obvious is to ask a group of people what trades characterize the British, the Russians, the Americans. Results of such studies of the whole agree well with what might have been expected. English are said to be prim. Weather is the most important topic in the land. In English this is an ever – interesting, even thrilling topic and you must be good at discussing the weather. You must never contradict anybody when discussing the weather. Should it hail and snow, should hurricanes up root the trees, should someone remark to you "Nice day, isn’t it?" – answer without hesitation "Isn’t it lovely?" On the continent people either tell you the truth or lie, in Britain they hardly ever lie but they don’t tell you the truth either. The British like people of every country tend to be attributed with certain characteristics which are supposedly typical. However you should be cautious about accepting such characterizations too easily. Societies change over time while their reputations lag behind. Many things which are often regarded as typically British are no longer representative of modern life. One example of this is the popular belief that Britain is a land of traditions. This is what most tourist brochures claim. The claim is based on what can be seen in public life. And at this level – the level of public life it is undoubtedly true. However in private everyday lives the British as individuals are probably less inclined to follow traditions than other people of most other countries. According to the stereotypes English are also thought to be reserved, conservative, shy of strangers, suspicious of change and slow to accept new ideas, responsible, honest and unemotional. But I think this stereotype pictures are far from true, especially in today’s world.

Nationality stereotypes are often described in anecdotes, humorous stories, private diaries. For example American westerns are dynamic and thrilly. They show us men strength in fights, gun fighting and horse riding skills, but to my mind it was various that made American character. You can easily spot Americans abroad by their toughness. It comes from their sense of individual freedom. Americans realize that individuals must rely on themselves, otherwise they risk to loose their freedom. So, self-reliance usually is the second trade and moral value supposed to be obligatory to a true American. The third national value accounts for their confident and unaffected manners. The fourth American value is competition. Sixty percent of the Americans believe in competition and so desire to win is healthy. In spite of the fact that society can’t consist only of winners the Americans are optimistic. They believe that every problem has a solution. The fifth national value is material wealth. Most Americans believe wealth is a reward for hard work and that it’s possible to have good standard of living if a person works hard. God helps those who help themselves – says the proverb. The sense of humor is often the most revealing aspect of a culture. Surely, humor has never been valued more highly in any other civilization than in this one.

The Russian are considered to be industries, tough, brave and progressive. These stereotypes are derived from books, films and other cultural media. As any nation the Russians have both positive and negative qualities. On the one hand, people who belong to this nationality are hard-working, willing to respect the opinion of other people. They regard other racial or ethnic groups as equal. They are fond of being with other people, enjoying social life, hospitable to foreigners. On the other hand sometimes they are inclined to cheat and unwilling to respect the views, ideas, opinions opposite to their own. This is my point of view on this problem.

I also would like to say stereotypes are a part of human life though they may present one sided exaggerated view of religion, racial ethnic groups of people as well as of classes of people. Stereotypes are certainly not reliable description of individual people but they still exist.
