Christmas is a magical time. All European countries, America and of course Russia wait for this time to stay with the family and friends and celebrate the most important holiday of the year.
Russia really loves and respects Christmas and its traditions. People start to prepare everything few days and even weeks before this holiday. Children decorate the Christmas trees and parents organize the house and prepare dinner.
In Russia we celebrate 2 Christmas. First is in December 25. Catholic prepare a Christmas Eve dinner in December 24, congratulate each other and go to the church at midnight. Next morning it’s Christmas and people invite relatives and friends, have lunch all together and relax at home.
Orthodox celebrate Christmas in January 7. They also have dinner late in the evening and then go to the church.
Half of my friends and relatives are Catholics, half are orthodox. So my family celebrate both holidays.
It’s a very bright and special time. I think people become nicer and happier at Christmas. In many towns and villages we decorate Christmas tree in the center, congratulate each other, say sorry and make piece with enemies. It’s a great tradition to forget and leave all problems in the past and move on with smile and happiness to future.
There is another interesting tradition in our country to go around from home to home, sing Christmas carols and get some candy. Usually children get together and walking around in the evening. Now this tradition is not really popular in the towns, but villages still have it.
I think it’s nice to celebrate Christmas all over the world. That means that people believe and expect miracle in future.

Поэтому, моя семья отмечает оба праздника. Это очень светлое и особенное время. Мне кажется, люди становятся добрее и счастливее в Рождество. There is a lot of things a family might need to do before Christmas Day, such as decoration, shopping for presents, writing cards, making special meals, sending out invitations. It is traditional to buy Advent Calendars for children or even grown-ups. An Advent Calendar is a calendar where each day until Christmas Day is represented by a small box. Children are supposed to open one small box every day. Usually, there is a treat or just something nice in it.
Christmas Day is a public holiday in the United Kingdom, and many people see it as a day they can spend with their families and friends. In December most families buy Christmas trees, put them up in their houses and decorate them. Usually, the decorations include tinsel, baubles, paper snowflakes.
