Answer my question, please: Who was born in the little village near Archangelsk? (Mikhail Lomonosov)

Of course, you’ve already met some information about this man before, but now you are going to learn more. Les’s read the text about him and answer some questions.

Mikhail Lomonosov was born in 1711 in Archangelsk province. His father was a fisher and young Mikhail liked to help him. He always strove for knowledge and liked reading books.

As he was 19 years old, he decided to study in Moscow. He went there on foot. In Moscow he entered the Slavic- Greek-Latin Academy. After his graduation from Academy he was sent abroad to complete his knowledge in chemistry and mining. After he had returned from abroad, he became the first Russian professor of chemistry in 1745.

At first he was engaged in research in physics and chemistry. Since 1748 he had conducted works in the first Russian chemical research laboratory, which was built at his request.

Since 1753 he was engaged in research in many fields of natural and applied sciences. He wrote works on physics, astronomy, geography, history. Besides scientific works, he wrote poems as well. He is the author of the first scientific grammar of the Russian language.

He founded the factory producing colored glass. He created some mosaics using the glass produced at the factory.

Lomonosov was the founder of the first Russian university. This university is situated in Moscow and still carries his name.

Mikhail Lomonosov died in 1765. But he is still known as the father of the Russian science, an outstanding poet, the founder of Russian literature.

Well, boys and girls, today you have learned a lot about people who are famous in their countries and abroad. They are an example for many others. You have your own role models and the task for the next lesson is to prepare for the test.

Most everyone has a role model in their life. They could be a parent, a friend, a teacher, or a sports hero. They could be the D.A.R.E officer who works in your school. He could be someone you read about in a book.

A role model is hard to define, because it can be different for everyone. Who your role model is depends as much on you as it does on the person you admire. Often, it is someone you would like to be like when you get older, or someone who does something you find hard to do.

They might be somebody who performs outstanding volunteer work. They might be a community leader. They might be your mentor. Maybe they are generous and kind. Maybe they performed an extraordinary feat or accomplishment. They might be someone in your neighborhood, or someone in another country.

Typically, a role model is brave, smart, strong, kind, thoughtful and fun. Not that every role model is perfect. Unless it is someone out of a storybook, role models are people who might be outstanding in only one or two areas. Or maybe it is someone who is far less than perfect, but is working to improve himself or herself.

Если это не кто-то из сборника рассказов, ролевые модели — это люди, которые могут быть выдающимися только в одной или двух областях. Или, может быть, это человек, который намного менее совершенен, но работает над тем, чтобы улучшить себя.

Everyone has a role model. Whether an athlete, an older sibling, a parent or relative, or just a special someone everyone wants to be “just like” that certain person. I am a role model to my younger siblings, my cousins, and I hope to be a role model to all of the Wild Life kids. Being a role model means a lot to me, and it is great to know that people look up to me.

I have three younger siblings, all of whom look up to me. Everything that I do reflects upon them. This is good, but also bad in a way. For one, I have to be careful in everything that I say and do. For example, if I had bad language in front of my little brothers and sister it would be likely that they would think that it was acceptable behavior and they would do it also. I know that they copy everything I do, so I try to be extra careful around them. I say a few bad words every once in a while, but when they are around I try to be extra careful. Another thing that they look up to me is for my sports. They want to play all the same ones that I do, so I feel that I have to work hard at them to be good so that they will too. My little brother and sister are my biggest fans, so it is very important to me to keep on being a good role model for them.

Next year I may be a Wild Life leader for the seventh and eighth graders. This would be a great opportunity for me to be a role model to many kids, and would be great for them because I would make it as fun as possible for them. If I were a Wild Life leader, I would have to show the younger kids that God is the number one priority in my life and should be in theirs as well. It would take a lot of hard work and effort to commit to this experience but I would love to be a role model to hundreds of kids. It would be a great experience for me.

My role models have always been my parents, and my uncles. Role models are important to have in one’s life. I am a role model to my brothers and sister, my cousins, and next year I hope to be a role model for all of the Wild Life kids. I try very hard to set good examples and be a good role model, because being a role model, to me, is one of the most important things in my life.
