Данный сценарий составлен на основе книги A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens , Free eBooks at Planet eBook и текста для чтения из учебника английского языка для 6 класса школ с углубленным изучением английского языка, лицеев, гимназий, колледжей авторы О.А.Афанасьева, И.В.Михеева, М."Просвещение",2002г.. Инсценировку выполняли учащиеся 11 класса во время проведения недели английского языка. Зрителями и исполнителями песен были учащиеся 5 класса.

A Christmas Carol

(adapted after Ch.Dickens)

Story-teller : Have you ever heard about Christmas Carols? They are religious songs sung at Christmas. At Christmas time groups of people sing carols, both indoors and outdoors. They usually collect money for homeless and poor people. Sometimes carol singers, especially children, go along the streets from house to house, singing in front of each house and asking for money.

But there is a Christmas carol which is not a song or a hymn, it is a story told more than a century and a half ago by one of the most wonderful story-tellers of the world - Charles Dickens, the famous English writer.

Story-teller : Once upon a time old Ebenezer Scrooge sat busy in his office.

Ebenezer Scrooge : It is Christmas Eve and the weather is cold and foggy. ( глядявприоткрытуюдверь ) There is my nephew sitting and writing letters. Cratchit . I pay him less than a pound a week. This is not half enough for Cratchit"s large family. But I don"t like spending my money. That is why the fire in my office is very small and Bob Cratchit"s hands are so cold that he can hardly write. But I don"t like spending my money.

Bob Cratchit : Merry Christmas, uncle! God save you!

Ebenezer Scrooge : Humbug! Merry Christmas. You have no right to be merry. You are poor.

Bob Cratchit : You are telling the truth, uncle. I"m poor but I"m a happy man because I"m married a woman whom I love.

Ebenezer Scrooge : I cannot understand this. I think that love is even sillier than a Merry Christmas.

Bob Cratchit : I want to invite you to have Christmas dinner with me and my young wife, uncle Ebenezer.

Ebenezer Scrooge : I don"t want to hear about it.

Bob Cratchit : Sorry, uncle. Merry Christmas! (Боб уходит домой).

Ebenezer Scrooge : Who are you? Well, I know you. You are the ghost of Marley, my partner, who died several years ago. Why do you trouble me?

Ghost: I had been very selfish when I was alive. I had been interested only in money and had not cared about people outside my office. That is why now I have no rest and no peace. I wear the chain I made in life link by link. Do you know, Ebenezer Scrooge, the weight and length of the chain you wear yourself? I am here tonight to tell you that you have yet a chance and hope not to go my way. Tonight you will see Three Spirits . The first will come tomorrow at one in the morning. And now I am leaving.

Ebenezer Scrooge : Oh, what was it? I"d better go to bed. ( ложитсяспать)

1st Spirit : I am the Ghost of Christmas Past. Let"s travell to the past and remember something from your life.

Ebenezer Scrooge : I remember how lonely and unhappy I was once long ago when I was a schoolboy. I remember my kind sister who brought me home from school on Christmas Eve many years ago and we were together and had the merriest time in the world. My sister had a kind and large heart. but she was not very strong and died soon after she had a child - my nephew, Bob Cratchit.

2nd Spirit : I am the Ghost of Christmas Present. Now I will change your home. I will hang the walls with evergreens: holly, mistletoe, and ivy. I"m making a bright fire in the fireplace, filling the rooms with turkeys, geese, meat, puddings, cakes and fruit. Would you like to have a look at your nephew"s house?

Ebenezer Scrooge : No, no, I wouldn"t!

2nd Spirit : Look! Here they are. Bob, his wife and their six children are at home. They can"t see you, but you can see them and you can hear everything. The smallest boy called Tiny Tim is a very weak child and it is clear that he won"t live long. Mrs.Cratchit is cutting up the goose and the pudding is on the table. There isn"t enough food for such a large family, but nobody notices this. Everybody says to Mrs.Cratchit how much they love the goose and the pudding.

Bob Cratchit : "A Merry Christmas to us all, my dears. God bless us!"

Tiny Tim : "A Merry Christmas!"

All the family : God bless us, everyone!

Bob Cratchit : Let"s drink to Mr.Scrooge who gave us this dinner. Long life to him! A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

2nd Spirit : They are not a rich family, they are not well-dressed, their shoes are cheap, but they are happy, grateful and pleased with one another.

Now look at your nephew"s home too. He is talking to his wife. They are talking about you.

Bob Cratchit : Uncle Scrooge is a funny old man and he isn"t very pleasant either. His money is of no use to him. He can"t do any good with it. I can"t be angry with him. I am sorry for him. I"d like to wish a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to the Old Man!

Ebenezer Scrooge : Who are you?

3d Spirit : I am the Ghost Yet to Come, the Ghost of the Future. I want you to come with me to the centre of London, not far from your office. Look, there"s a group of businessmen. Come up to them and listen to their talk.

One of the businessmen : Look, this is former Mr.Scrooge"s office. Once I saw his grave. There are no flowers there. Nobody comes to remember him.

Ebenezer Scrooge : No, Spirit! Oh, no, no! I am not the man I was. Good Spirit, I"ll start a new life! I will keep Christmas in my heart all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present and the Future. I will always remember this lesson !

In this book of excitement the main character, Scrooge, who is acomplete grouch (especially at Christmas) is visited by the ghost of hisdead business partner who is there to warn him. The Ghost tells himthat he will be visited by three more ghosts. And they take him on ajourney through Christmas Past, Present, and Future to see the ups ofChristmas and the downs of the way he is living to try to save him andmany others from himself, and his huge Bah Humbug Attitude. This book isan eye opener and a sensation.
Dickens sets his novella in this the Christmas period to show thetrue meaning of sharing, giving and receiving. Through hisrepresentation of Scrooge, Dickens wants the reader to learn from hismiserable personality and to encourage others to change their ways too.It seems that the reason why he wanted to do this was because the richdidn’t appreciate the poor; during the Industrial Revolution the gapwidened between the rich and the poor - the poor being forgotten. Thisis why Scrooge then was visited by three different ghosts: the past,present and future. These ghosts highlight the need for Scrooge tochange and value the poor and recognise their needs.

INTRODUCTION

The combined qualities of the realist and the idealist which Dickens possessed to a remarkable degree, together with his naturally jovial attitude toward life in general, seem to have given him a remarkably happy feeling toward Christmas, though the privations and hardships of his boyhood could have allowed him but little real experience with this day of days.

Dickens gave his first formal expression to his Christmas thoughts in his series of small books, the first of which was the famous "Christmas Carol," the one perfect chrysolite. The success of the book was immediate. Thackeray wrote of it: " Who can listen to objections regarding such a book as this It seems to me a national benefit, and to every man or woman who reads it, a personal kindness. "

This volume was put forth in a very attractive manner, with illustrations by John Leech, who was the first artist to make these characters live, and his drawings were varied and spirited.

There followed upon this four others: "The Chimes," "The Cricket on the Hearth," "The Battle of Life," and "The Haunted Man," with illustrations on their first appearance by Doyle, Maclise, and others. The five are known to-day as the "Christmas Books. " Of them all the "Carol" is the best known and loved, and "The Cricket on the Hearth," although third in the series, is perhaps next in point of popularity, and is especially familiar to Americans through Joseph Jefferson"s characterisation of Caleb Plummer.

Dickens seems to have put his whole self into these glowing little stories. Whoever sees but a clever ghost story in the "Christmas Carol" misses its chief charm and lesson, for there is a different meaning in the movements of Scrooge and his attendant spirits. A new life is brought to Scrooge when he, " running to his window, opened it and put out his head. No fog, no mist; clear, bright, jovial, stirring cold; cold, piping for the blood to dance to; Golden sun-light; Heavenly sky; sweet fresh air; merry bells. Oh, glorious! Glorious! " All this brightness has its attendant shadow, and deep from the childish heart comes that true note of pathos, the ever memorable toast of Tiny Tim, "God bless Us, Every One! " "The Cricket on the Hearth" strikes a different note. Charmingly, poetically, the sweet chirping of the little cricket is associated with human feelings and actions, and at the crisis of the story decides the fate and fortune of the carrier and his wife.

Перевод названия произведения в русской литературе встречается в нескольких вариантах: "Рождественская песнь в прозе", "Рождественская песня", "Рождественская история", "Повесть о Рождестве с участием Духов". Замысел написать произведение на тему Рождества возник у художника по дороге в Манчестер, куда Ч. Диккенса пригласили выступить с докладом о важности обучения для работников фабрик и заводов. Тогда писатель решил написать сочинение именно для тружеников, чтобы даже самый бедный человек мог купить (за символическую плату в 5 шиллингов) и прочитать хорошую книжку, чтобы у бедняков появилась вера и надежда в их жизни. "Рождественская песнь в прозе" стала началом серии "Рождественские книги", куда всего вошли три повести. Эти книги были напечатаны накануне Рождества. Чарльз Диккенс издавал их за свой счет, уверен, что образование и воспитание помогут решить проблемы бедности и преступности в обществе.

Структура и характеристика повести "Рождественская песнь в прозе"

В первом куплете произведения призрак умершего Марли явился к Скруджу как напоминание о духовной смерти. Со слов Марли читатель узнает, что тот жалеет о прожитых зря годах. Он мало творил добра, за это его душа обречена, мучиться после смерти ("непрестанные угрызения совести"). Призрак Марли хочет обратить Скруджа к человечности и доброте, поэтому и обращается к нему, обещая дальнейшие встречи с другими Приведеньями-Духами Прошлого, Настоящего и Будущего. Это должно помочь жестокому и жадному Скруджу переосмыслить свою жизнь и отношения с людьми.

Во втором куплете автор фантастики показал прошлое Скруджа. Герой встречается с первым Призраком - Духом Древнего Рождества (то есть Духом Прошлого). С его помощью Скрудж оглянулся на свой жизненный путь, и его душа вздрогнула от увиденного. Он вспомнил все, что любил, ценил, от чего отказался ради денег. Он предал свою семью, любимую, друзей - и все это ради обогащения. Однако можно ли считать золото настоящим богатством? По контрасту к смерти Скруджа звучит рассказ о смерти малыша Тима. Вся семья Крэтчитев оплакивает его, ибо в нем горела Божья искра. Его любить за тот добрый свет, которое исходило от него, рядом с ним люди становились добрее, человечнее, милосердными. Отец Тима говорит, что лучшая память о Тиме – это жизнь в мире и согласии согласно с Божьими заповедями.

Используя средства фантастики, Ч. Диккенс поднимает важные проблемы жизни и смерти, но не в физическом, а в философском смысле. Библия учит, что у человека есть две жизни и две смерти - физическая и духовная. Внешне человек может выглядеть как живой и здоровый, а на самом деле его душа мертва, если человек не творит добро для других и наоборот, жизнь умершего человека может продолжиться и после ее смерти - в памяти других, в добрых поступках, которые она оставляет после себя. В повести писатель с помощью фантастики осуждает подлую жизнь Скруджа, которой автор считает моральной смертью, и прославляет вечную жизнь души малыша Тима, которую тот заслужил добрым отношением к людям.

Кульминация и развязка в повести Диккенса "Рождественская песнь в прозе"

В финале этого куплета происходит кульминация - духовное перерождение героя, который понял, увидев надпись на могильной плите, что надо жить по-другому.

В пятом куплете содержится развязка произведения. Встретившись с Прошлым, Настоящим и Будущим, Скрудж изменился и решил жить добропорядочно, заботиться о других, дарить людям тепло своего сердца. Смысл Рождества заключается в духовном перерождении человека, открытии Бога в ее душе, творении добра. К этому выводу писатель постепенно подводит читателей.

Признаки жанров песни и сказки в повести Диккенса. Рождественские песни - это особый лирический жанр. Их поют все христиане с целью прославить Бога и обратить людей к добру. Чарльз Диккенс использовал признаки этого жанра, чтобы утвердить необходимости духовного пробуждения человека и всего общества. В произведении находим и некоторые черты волшебной сказки - атмосфера необычного, использование фантастики, появление удивительных персонажей (Призраков), борьба добра со злом, жизни со смертью с обязательной победой добра и жизни - Эта борьба перенесена в душу человека.

Christmas in the United Kingdom

Christmas is a traditional Christian holiday. On that day, people celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. In the United Kingdom, it is celebrated on the 25th of December, it is one of the biggest and most popular holidays in the country.

Although Christmas is a religious holiday, it is celebrated by everyone, not only religious people. Nowadays for many people Christmas is just a family holiday when they can get together, have a special dinner and give presents.

The celebration of Christmas is preceded by the Season of Advent, it begins about one month before Christmas Day. People spend Advent in different ways. It is a quite important period for some religious people, they spend it preparing for Christmas. For a lot of people, it is just a period when they prepare for the celebration. There is a lot of things a family might need to do before Christmas Day, such as decoration, shopping for presents, writing cards, making special meals, sending out invitations. It is traditional to buy Advent Calendars for children or even grown-ups. An Advent Calendar is a calendar where each day until Christmas Day is represented by a small box. Children are supposed to open one small box every day. Usually, there is a treat or just something nice in it.

Christmas Day is a public holiday in the United Kingdom, and many people see it as a day they can spend with their families and friends. In December most families buy Christmas trees, put them up in their houses and decorate them. Usually, the decorations include tinsel, baubles, paper snowflakes. The top of the tree is decorated with an angel or star. People also send cards to their friends, the cards usually say ‘Merry Christmas!’ or ‘Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!’

The celebration begins on the 24th of December, on Christmas Eve. Children leave a stocking for Santa Claus who brings them presents during the night. Parents tell their children that Santa knows who has been a good child and who has not. He leaves presents for good children, but he might leave a piece of coal for those children who have not been good. But, of course, usually, children find only presents but not coal in the stockings the next morning. Some people go to church on Christmas Eve, they listen to the Christmas stories and sing carols.

On the 25th of December children open their presents, it is always a very exciting morning for them! In the afternoon people have dinner. They might pull crackers before it and congratulate each other. Traditionally, most people have a turkey for dinner and, of course, a Christmas pudding. At three o’clock people watch TV, every year the Queen congratulates everyone and says ‘Happy Christmas’.

Hogmanay (Хогманэй) — так называют Новый Год в Шотландии. По всей стране, и особенно в столице Шотландии — городе Эдинбурге, толпы людей собираются в центре города, который превращается в настоящее шоу. Люди танцуют под звук волынок. Это национальный шотландский инструмент. Посмотрите на волынщика на фото. Без них в Шотландии не обходится ни одно шоу!

Также Шотландский новый год невозможно представить без застольной песни. И, конечно, же это — Auld Lang Syne.

Если вы заглянули на эту страничку, то сейчас скорее всего вторая половина декабря. В эти темные дни в домах и квартирах начинают зажигаться гирлянды и появляться нарядные елки. Снежинки на окнах, фонарики, красивые фигурки новогодних персонажей, а также сочные красный и зеленый цвета поднимают нам настроение! Мы начинаем ждать перемен, которые придут с Новым годом, и готовимся к Рождеству.
