Background

Charlotte Brontë was born 21 April 1816. She attended Clergy Daughter’s School in Lancashire in 1824. However, she returned home next year because of the harsh conditions and the death of her two sisters. In 1831 she went to school at Roe Head, where she later worked as a teacher. However, she fell ill, suffered from melancholia, and gave up this post. Charlotte tried to work as a governess but her attempts were hindered by her shyness, her ignorance of normal children, and her yearning to be with her sisters.

Brussels

In 1842, Charlotte travelled to Brussels with Emily to learn French, German, and management. She spent less than two years there and when she came back home she suffered from severe hypochondria.

First works

In 1846 the three sisters – Charlotte, Emily and Ann published a book of Poems, and though sales were very slow, the reviews were quite good. Charlotte’s novel The Professor wasn’t successful at all.

Jane Eyre

In August of 1846 Charlotte began to work on Jane Eyre, which was published only in October, 1847 and immediately became popular. Charlotte dedicated the book to William Makepeace Thackeray, who described it as “the masterwork of a great genius”. The heroine of Jane Eyre is a penniless orphan who becomes a teacher, obtains a post as a governess, inherits money from an uncle, and then marries. In this book Charlotte used her experiences at the Evangelical school and as governess.

Close ones dying

In the years of 1848 and 1849 Charlotte’s brother and her sister Ann died. Charlotte’s grief was reflected in the last third of the novel Shirley, which she had been working on at that time. The main character of the book is an independent, brave and outspoken woman.

Marriage and death

In 1854 Charlotte Bronte married her father’s curate, Arthur Bell Nicholls. She died during her pregnancy on March 31, 1855.

Charlotte Brontfi (1816 - 1855)
was born in Yorkshire, England. After her mother's death in 1821, Charlotte was sent away to school by her aunt. The poor conditions there affected her health badly. After finishing school, Charlotte first worked as a teacher and then as a governess for various families in Yorkshire. She wrote four novels, one of which, The Professor (1857), was published two years after her death. She also wrote Shirley (1849), Villette (1853) and her most popular novel, Jane Eyre (1847).
Jane Eyre tells the story of an orphaned girl who is brought up by her unkind aunt and cousins John, Eliza and Georgiana, until she is eventually sent away to an awful school. The book then follows Jane's difficult life until she finally finds love and happiness. Jane Eyre has been made into several successful films and TV series and is one of the most well-known and best loved books in English literature.

John had not much affection for his mother and sisters, and a strong dislike for me. He bullied and punished me; not two or three times in the week, nor once or twice in the day, but continually, every nerve I had feared him, and every morsel1 of flesh in my bones shrank when he came near. There were moments when I was bewildered by the terror he made me feel, because I was helpless to do anything about his threats or his inflictions; the servants did not like to offend their young master by taking my side against him, and Mrs Reed was blind and deaf on the subject: she never saw him strike or heard him abuse me, though he did both now and then in her very presence, more frequently, however, behind her back.

Habitually obedient to John, I came up to his chair: he spent some three minutes in thrusting out his tongue at me as far as he could, without damaging the roots: I knew he would soon strike, and while dreading the blow, I thought about the disgusting and ugly appearance of him who would shortly deal it. I wonder if he read that idea in my face; for, all at once, without speaking, he struck suddenly and strongly. I tottered, and on regaining my balance moved back a step or two from his chair.
"That is for your impudence in answering mama a while ago," said he, "and for your sneaking way of getting behind curtains, and for the look you had in your eyes two minutes ago, you rat!"
Accustomed to John Reed's abuse, I never thought of replying to it. My worry was how to endure the blow which would certainly follow the insult.
"What were you doing behind the curtain?" he asked.
"I was reading."
"Show the book."
I returned to the window and fetched it.
"You have no right to take our books. You are a dependant, mama says. You have no money. Your father left you none. You ought to beg, and not to live here with gentlemen's children like us, and eat the same meals we do, and wear clothes at our mama's expense. Now, I'll teach you to rummage through my bookshelves: for they ARE mine; all the house belongs to me, or will do in a few years. Go and stand by the door, out of the way of the mirror and the windows."
I did so, not at first aware of his intentions, but when I saw him lift the book and get ready to hurl it, I instinctively moved aside with a cry of alarm: not soon enough, however; the volume was flung, it hit me, and I fell, striking my head against the door and cutting it. The cut bled, the pain was sharp. My terror had passed its climax, other feelings took over.
"Wicked and cruel boy!" I said. "You are like a murderer - you are like a slave-driver3 - you are like the Roman emperors!"
I had read Goldsmith's History of Rome, and had formed my opinion of Nero, Caligula etc. Also I had drawn parallels in silence, which until now I had never thought to declare aloud.
"What! what!", he cried. "Did she say that to me? Did you hear her, Eliza and Georgiana? I'll tell mama! but first. "
He ran headlong at me: I felt him grasp my hair and my shoulder. I really saw in him a tyrant, a murderer. I felt a drop or two of blood from my head trickle down my neck, and was aware of deep suffering: these sensations for the time predominated over fear. I don't very well know what I did with my hands, but he called me "Rat! Rat!", and bellowed out aloud. Help was near him: Eliza and Georgiana had run for Mrs Reed, who was upstairs: she now came upon the scene, followed by Bessie and her maid Abbot. We were parted: I heard the words: "Dear! Dear! How disgraceful to fly at Master John!" "Did ever anybody see such a picture of passion?" Then Mrs Reed said:

Charlotte Bronte was born on April 21, 1816, in Thornton, Yorkshire, England. Patrick Brontë and his wife Maria had 6 children. In 1820 the Brontë family moved to Haworth, Mrs. Brontë dying the following year.

In 1824 the four eldest Brontë daughters were enrolled as pupils at the Clergy Daughter’s School at Cowan Bridge. The following year Maria and Elizabeth, the two eldest daughters, became ill, left the school and died: Charlotte and Emily, understandably, were brought home.

In 1826 Mr. Brontë brought home a box of wooden soldiers for Branwell to play with. Charlotte, Emily, Branwell, and Ann, playing with the soldiers, conceived of and began to write in great detail about an imaginary world which they called Angria.

In 1831 Charlotte became a pupil at the school at Roe Head, but she left school the following year to teach her sisters at home. She returned returns to Roe Head School in 1835 as a governess: for a time her sister Emily attended the same school as a pupil, but became homesick and returned to Haworth. Ann took her place from 1836 to 1837.

In 1838, Charlotte left Roe Head School. In 1839 she accepted a position as governess in the Sidgewick family, but left after three months and returned to Haworth. In 1841 she became governess in the White family, but left, once again, after nine months.

Upon her return to Haworth the three sisters, led by Charlotte, decided to open their own school after the necessary preparations had been completed. In 1842 Charlotte and Emily went to Brussels to complete their studies. After a trip home to Haworth, Charlotte returned alone to Brussels, where she remained until 1844.

In 1849 Charlotte, visiting London, began to move in literary circles, making the acquaintance, for example, of Thackeray. In 1850 Charlotte edited her sister’s various works, and met Mrs. Gaskell. In 1851she visited the Great Exhibition in London, and attended a series of lectures given by Thackeray.

In 1854, Charlotte married Arthur Bell Nicholls, but died the following year during her pregnancy, on March 31, 1855, in Haworth, Yorkshire, England. The first novel she ever wrote, The Professor, was published posthumously in 1857.

Charlotte was born on 21 of April in Haworth, Yorkshire in 1816. Haworth.

Mister Bronte did not like people. He never had dinner together with his children. Only dark-colored clothes was accepted. The priest's house was located on the outskirts near the local cemetery. They escaped their in an ideal world, which did not look like a boring reality.

In 1824 Charlotte was sent with three of her sisters, Emily, Maria, and Elizabeth, to the Clergy Daughters' School at Cowan Bridge in Lancashire 9 year old Charlotte turned out to be the eldest child in the whole family. To my surprise, the headmaster of school did not feel any self-recrimination. He even considered that it was the real mystery and benefit to die during childhood. Soon she moved back and was replaced by Ann. Ann became beloved by everybody in Roe Head. There was enough money to open a school. However, students were not attracted by outskirts where school should be situated and the clergyman’s house near the cemetery where lesson should take place.

Sisters were urged to create under the names of Bell brothers. In 1844 “Wuthering Heights” and “Agnes Grey” were published. In 1847 Charlotte Bronte showed her novel “Jane Eyre” which was published as Carrier’s Bell novel and it was a great success.

From 1848 there were several deaths in Charlotte’s family. Branwell died of clanks in September. Emily depressed by her brother’s decease died of consumption in December. “Take courage, Charlotte, take courage”

In 1849 Charlotte finished another novel “ Shirley ”. She being as a writer was not a secret already and it was perceived ambiguously.

Soon after publishing her second novel she travelled a lot and had been to London. She met her idol a writer William Thackeray. William Thackeray

In a year Charlotte found a silk for her future dress but she cannot afford it as she can’t use her earned money because in that time In England all women’s money belonged to a husband or a father.

In 1853 a new Charlotte’s novel “Vilette” was published. Nearly at that time Arthur Bell Nuckolls asked her in marriage. However, her father worried.

One day Charlotte arranged a tea-party for 5 hundred people.

The 31 of March in 1855 Charlotte died of a cold and weariness- it’s the first variant of the cause of her death. Other people suppose to believe that Charlotte Bronte died with an unborn child.
