During winter classes, Christmas and New Year films are virtually begging to fit in your Christmas lesson plan. Since lesson time is limited, here we provide you with a list of short films that will come in handy for boosting your speaking activities during the class.

At the beginning of the film, we see two main characters in a cemetery. The elder one is very gloomy standing by the grave of his wife. She died 10 years ago and her son never met his own mother. The boy is funny and smart and cares for his father. He does his best to bring happiness and Christmas spirit into his small family.

Pre-watching questions

  1. What is Christmas about?
  2. Name five components that make Christmas magical.
  3. Do you prefer giving gifts to your friends, relatives or to strangers at Christmas?

After-watching questions

  1. How would you describe the little boy and his father?
  2. Who was the first person they helped and how?
  3. How could someone bring Christmas spirit in your opinion?
  4. Did the ending of the film surprise you? How?

This is a very short but incredibly great story which can be used as a warm-up activity. It is about a small girl who gives her own gift to another girl who is homeless and is freezing in the street.

Pre-watching questions

  1. What is special about Christmas?
  2. Do you give presents to the poor at Christmas?

After-watching questions

  1. What did the girl’s mother buy for her?
  2. Who did the girl give her present to and why?
  3. What would you do if you were her?
  4. Comment on the statement: “Christmas is less about opening presents and more about opening our hearts”.

It tells a tale of a young boy who is getting ready for Christmas. However, there is one lady in this neighbourhood who doesn’t want the holiday to come at all. The boy does his best to bring colour to her gloomy world.

Pre-watching questions

  1. Do people behave differently during Christmas? Do they try to be better?
  2. What about decorate the outside of your house for Christmas? If so, how? If not, why?
  3. Do you have a Christmas tree? When do you put it up? When do you take it down? Is it real or artificial?

After-watching questions

  1. What did Henry want to do at Christmas? What difficulties did he face?
  2. Why did he go to the lady’s house?
  3. What did Henry do there?
  4. What did the lady tell Henry?
  5. Does the lady believe in Santa? Why?
  6. Why did Henry leave the lady’s house?
  7. How did the story end?

If you are not short of time, you can use this cartoon for some lively discussion. It is about a little girl who goes to church on Christmas Eve and takes Baby Jesus from there. She cares for him a lot.

Pre-watching questions

  1. Do you like watching cartoons at Christmas and New Year? If so, what is your favourite one?
  2. What cartoons do you prefer — American, European, Russian? Why?

  4. What do you think the main idea of the cartoon is?

Have you used any short films in your lessons before? Let us know in the comments down below!

1. What things spring to mind when you think of Christmas and New Year?

2. Read the quote. To what extent do you agree with Edna Ferber? Give your reasoning.

3. How does the holiday mood feel? Give a few adjectives or nouns.

4. Think of a Christmas or New Year memory from your childhood. Share it with the rest of the class/group and say why it is special to you.

5. Are holidays more fun when you’re a kid than when you’re a grown-up? Why or why not?

6. Read the quote below. Do you think Charles M. Schulz is right? Explain your point of view.

7. How important is the custom of gift-giving at Christmas?

8. What do you like more to give presents or to get presents?

9. How could you interpret the lines from Dr Seuss's book How the Grinch stole Christmas ?

Maybe Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more. Dr Seuss

Before watching:

1. If somebody works round the clock, do they work hard?

(to work round the clock means to work all day and all night without stopping; Staff have been working around the clock to resolve the problems)

Think of people who work round the clock to make our Christmas and New Year holidays satisfying.

2. If someone isn't cutting it, are they doing a good or a bad job?

( (informal) not to be as good as is expected or needed He won't cut it as a professional singer)

3. If you're doomed, are you going to succeed or fail?

(be doomed = certain to fail, suffer, die, etc. The movie tells the story of a doomed love affair. He thinks the company is utterly doomed.)

1. What would you like to get for Christmas or New Year?

2. Do you think Chrismas should mean more than gifts?

After watching:

1 . Which Christmas gift idea did the elves come up with?

2. What makes the idea of giving 'the holiday spirit' these days more relevant than ever?

3. What feelings and emotions would you wrap in a box to send to your friends and family members this year?

Christmas is the main public holiday in Britain and the US. This day is held on December 25 th in honour of the birth of Jesus Christ. People often see it as a time of merry-making and present giving.

Christmas is a religious holiday, when Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. The Christmas story comes from the Bible. An Angel appeared to shepherds and told them that a Savior had been born to Mary and Joseph in a stable in Bethlehem. The Wise Men followed a star until it led them to Jesus. The Wise Men gave Jesus many gifts. So it is a tradition to give presents on Christmas Day. Another tradition is to put a star on the top of Christmas tree.

On Christmas families are usually spend the day opening their presents which are often piled around the Christmas tree decorated with tinsel, candles, baubles, and fairy lights. The most beautiful Christmas tree is in the centre of London in Trafalgar Square. This is a present from the people of Norway to people of Great Britain.

All houses are beautifully decorated. Holly and mistletoe are used to decorate the house. They put branches of holly and mistletoe over the doors.

The most important meal is Christmas dinner. At the start of the meal, British people often pull a cracker, which contains a small toy, a paper bat, and a joke. The typical meal nowadays consists of turkey with potatoes and other vegetables such as carrots and sprouts.

In Britain the dinner is followed by Christmas pudding – a sweet pudding containing a lot of dried fruit and often covered with burning brandy. Other traditional foods in Britain include Christmas cake – a cake containing a lot of dried fruit and usually having a covering of icing (hard sugar) made to be eaten at Christmas, and mince pies. Traditionally a coin is put into the pudding. It brings luck to a person who finds it.

People sometimes go carol singing , which means singing carols in the street, outside people’s houses.

There is a tradition that children should put a long sock called a Christmas stocking at the end of their bed or by the chimney or hang it by the fireplace so that Santa Claus will fill it with presents. Tangerines or nuts are often put into the stockings. Santa Claus is supposed to visit each house on Christmas Eve by climbing down the chimney.

Santa Claus, also called Santa, Father Christmas (in Britain), or Kriss Kringle (in America) is an imaginary old man in red clothes and with a long white beard. He is supposed to fly about the sky in a sleigh, pulled by reindeer.

In Britain, the day after Christmas is called Boxing Day and is also a public holiday. A lot of sports take place on Boxing Day and many people now spend time watching sport on television. In the US many stores hold special sales, where things can be bought cheaply, on the day after Christmas.

  1. Christmas stockings

4. Well, you will work in pairs. Your task is to complete short texts about celebrating Christmas in different countries. You will have them, but you are to put the sentences into a logical order and then you’ll read them to all of us.

In the Netherlands, holiday tradition centers on the arrival of St. Nicholas.

The saint is said to come on horseback, bearing gifts for the children.

Before going to bed, the children leave out their shoes.

They hope to find them filled with goodies when they awake.

In Venezuela, the week leading up to Christmas is a time of great celebration.

It is the custom in Caracas to roller skate to church at this time.

Many neighborhoods even close busy streets to traffic so that skaters can get around.

After attending church, Venezuelans dine on coffee and tostados.

Right after Christmas, people travel in horse-drawn sleighs for the Kulig – the winter sleigh party.

Families gather in the forest, light fires, and prepare festive meals.

Later in the evening, they celebrate with dancing and fireworks.

In rural parts of southern Germany, the three Thursday evenings before Christmas are known as Knocking nights.

Children dress in masks and travel from house to house chanting rhymes beginning with the word knock.

Along the way, the children crack whips, ring cowbells, and clatter dish covers to drive away evil spirits.

V. Конкурсы (Activities)

Now you are going to do some tasks which are connected with Christmas. All these activities you are going to do in groups of four.

In the puzzle, find and circle the 20 hidden holiday words listed on Santa’s sack. The words go across, up, down, and diagonally in the puzzle. Some words may share a letter.
