The Hollywood Museum

The Hollywood Museum is the official museum of Hollywood, which shows the history of Hollywood and film-making. It has the greatest collection of Hollywood artifacts in the world. It is home to more than 10,000 real objects: costumes, photographs, scripts, posters and other things from favourite films and TV shows.

When the Hollywood Museum opened its doors in 2003, it was open just two days a week. It has since become a must-see for anyone who is a fan of movies and is now open five days a week.

The building is located at 1660 North Highland at Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood. The museum is in the historic Max Factor Building where Max Factor, Hollywood's Make-up King, created the looks of Hollywood's Golden Era stars, including Joan Crawford, Katharine Hepburn, Judy Garland, Jean Harlow, and Marilyn Monroe.

Max Factor was born in Poland, then he became the make-up artist to Russia's Tzar Nicholas II and his family, in 1908 he emigrated with his family to the United States. Max Factor built a cosmetic industry, created silver screen gods and goddesses, as well as a new look for women.

If you go to the Hollywood Museum, visit Max Factor's world famous make-up rooms, learn about the history of theatrical and 'street' make-up. See where Marilyn Monroe became a blonde and Lucille Ball got her famous red hair.

Each of the floors in the museum is different. The ground floor consists of the wonderful Max Factor rooms and a few large exhibits from recent science-fiction films. On the second and third floors you will see hundreds of costumes, including Marilyn Monroe's million-dollar dress. Be sure to see great horror movie objects which are on the lower level. There are special sections in the museum devoted to great actresses. Do not forget that the Hollywood Museum's new collection has items from the Harry Potter films.

Stop by the "100 Years of Hollywood" exhibition. You will see more than 1,000 black-and-white photos and learn some facts from the history of movie-making. See what "Hollywoodland" really looked like when it first became known as the "Entertainment Capital of the World"!

I was sitting next to Missy in my world history class. Mrs Bartlett announced a new project. At Mrs Bartlettʼs classes we learnt about cultures of different countries. In groups, we had to choose any country and make a newspaper about his culture.

Mrs Bartlett asked us to write the names of three friends on a piece of paper. She promised us to form the project groups according to the names. There were not many sociable people in the class, and Missy was one of them. I wrote her name on my piece of paper.

The next day, I was nervously looking forward to the history class. After the bell rang, Mrs Bartlett started to call out names. Missy was in group three. Mrs Bartlett called other names. My name was not there. Then I heard it. The last group: ˮMauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karinaˮ. How could I be in that group – Mauro couldn’t speak English, Juliette always wore long skirts and never jeans, and Rachel wore strange clothes. Oh, how I wanted to be with my friends!

I walked up to Mrs Bartlett. She looked at me and knew what I was there for. ˮI know what you want, Karina, ˮ she said, ˮbut your group needs you. I want you to help them to get good marks on this task. Only you can help them.ˮ I was surprised.

ˮWill you help them?ˮ she asked.

ˮYes, ˮI replied. I couldn’t understand why I said it, but I did.

I bravely walked to my group. I sat down and we started. We shared different newspaper articles according to our interests. In a week, I was enjoying the company. It was interesting to learn something about my group mates.

Mauro, I discovered, was trying hard to learn how to speak English language correctly. Juliette was alone. Her parents didn’t let her wear short skirts or jeans because of her religion. Rachel wanted to be a clothes designer. She suggested lots of excellent ideas for our project. Actually, there was nobody to care enough about these students, but Mrs Bartlett. She wanted to support them and show up the abilities of her students. I learnt a lot that week. Mrs Bartlett gave me the opportunity to see other people in a new light. In fact, who we are is more important than what we are.

After that history project, I always got a friendly hello from my group mates. And I was always happy to see them.
