I. Оргмомент урока.

Good morning, dear guests. Good morning, boys and girls. Sit down please. Let’s start our work.

The theme of our lesson is “Sport in my life”.

And the motto of our lesson is “Winners never quit, quitters never win”.

Today we’ll speak about the Olympic Games, different kinds of sport. You will do “Sport Quiz”, listen to Max’s story. We’ll try to answer the question “What role does sport play in your life?” These activities will help you to write a postcard to your pen-friend.

II. The Olympic Games

Many people say that they like sports because they enjoy watching it at the stadium or on TV. But watching sport event and going in for sports are two different things.

Do you agree with me? I hope you do.

The 21 st winter Olympic Games took place in Vancouver, Canada.

What competitions did you watch?

Were you sad or happy with the results? /What were your impressions?

Do you know how many medals our sportsmen won?

The Olympic Games have a long history. I want you to read some information about it. Look at the screen, please.

According to historic records, the first Olympic Games were held in 776B.C. in Olympia, Greece. The Games were held every four years in honour of the king of the gods, Zeus.

When were the first Olympic Games held?

For 1000 years the Games were at regular intervals of four years. Special messengers were sent out in every direction to announce the beginning of the Games and to signal an end of all wars until after the Games. In A.D. 393, the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius I banned the Games.

How did the people know about the beginning of the Games?

What happened in A.D. 393?

In 1894 Baron Pierre de Coubertin wrote a letter to the athletic organizations of every country. He became a founder of the modern Olympic movement. Two years later the first modern Olympic Games took place in Greece.

Who was the founder of the modern Olympic Games?

The modern Olympic Games are still held every fourth year, but were interrupted in 1916, 1940 and 1944 by World Wars.

Russia joined the Olympic Games in 1952. Since then Russia has won many gold, silver and bronze medals. In 1980 Moscow hosted the twenty-second summer Olympic Games.

Why weren’t the Games held in 1916, 1940 and 1944?

When did our country join the Olympic movement?

In 2014 Sochi will host the twenty-second winter Olympic Games. Here is the emblem of these Games. But the next winter Games haven’t got a symbol yet.

III. Different kinds of sport

There are different sports on the program of the Olympic Games. How many kinds of sport do you know? Let’s play a game. Name kinds of sport one by one. Don’t say the same words. Do it quickly, without stopping and pass the ball. Let’s try in Russian. … Does everybody understand the task? Now start the game in English.

We have done a lot of work today. Now you know sport makes people healthy and strong, brave and cheerful. Sport helps people make good friends, especially in team sports. It’s impossible to win a game if players in a team are not good friends. Sport shows your character and develops you character. It helps you to become more organized and disciplined. It teachers you to overcome difficulties and achieve good results.

Your home task for the next lesson will be to write a postcard to your pen-friend (Приложение 5) and read the dialogue from ex.6 at page 176.

People go in for different sports. When we speak about sports what verbs do we use – do, play, go or ride?

I’ll give you a paper with set of rules. Read, write the number of the sport or game in the correct line.

Exercise 1. Match the sport or game to the appropriate set of rules. Write the number of the sport or game in the correct box.

A. Each team may have up to eleven players, only seven of whom are allowed to play at the same time. One team should wear blue caps, the other white. Players must not splash water into an opponent’s face.

B. The two contestants must bow to each other at the start of the contest. They should wear white clothing. Contestants must only attack the arms and legs of their opponent. They should not get overexcited.

C. The game can be played by two or four players. The players must change positions after each game. The ball must touch the table on both sides of the net each time it is hit.

D. Competitors should wear a helmet. They must not stop another competitor from overtaking. Competitors are not allowed to help each other.

E. Each team may have up to ten players, only five of whom may play at the same time. Players are not allowed to leave the court without permission. The ball may be thrown but it must not be carried or kicked. A team must try for a goal within 30 seconds of getting possession of the ball.

F. Each team must have eleven players. The two teams should wear different colours. Only the goalkeeper is allowed to play the ball with his hands or arms.

G. Each team must have six players. The server may hit the ball with his hand or any part of the arm. He must release the ball from his other hand before hitting it. Players must not touch the net.

H. Each team may have up to seven-teen players, only six of whom are allowed to play at the same time. Players must wear skates and numbered shirts.

I. Contestants are weighed before the contest. The contestants’ assistants must leave the ring before the fight begins. Contestants must wear gloves and must not hit an opponent behind the neck.

Sport is very important in our life. The general belief is that a person who goes in for sports can’t be weak and ill. Physically inactive people get old earlier that those, who find time for sport activity. And of course good health is better than good medicine.

People all over the world are fond of sports and games. In our country sport is being widely popularized as well. The most popular kinds of sport are football, volleyball, basketball, tennis, figure-skating, aerobics, ping-pong and swimming. A lot of people are fond of jogging. In schools and colleges sport is a compulsory subject. Many young people attend sport sections. Some of them dream to become professional sportsmen.

As for me, I can’t imagine my life without sport. In summer I go jogging every morning and when I have free time I attend swimming pool. In winter I like to skate with my friends. It’s fun. Also I’m fond of aerobics. First of all aerobics helps to keep myself fit. It also attracts me because it resembles dancing.

In conclusion I’d like to say that I’m absolutely sure that doing sports is the best way to keep fit. Sport makes our bodies strong, it prevents us from getting too fat, and makes us more self-organized and better disciplined.
