Nazerke, tell us about the Land and the People of Great Britain. (Презентация 1, слайд 4)

Р 1: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (the UK) is the official name of the state which is situated in the British Isles? “Great Britain” is often the same as “Britain”, or “the United Kingdom”, It consists of four countries which are England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. You can see them on the map. Their capitals are London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast. The UK is an island state. The two main islands are Great Britain (where England, Scotland and Wales are situated) and Ireland. Northern Ireland and the independent Irish Republic are there.

The UK is separated from the continent by the English Channel and the Strait of Dover. The UK is also washed by the Atlantic Ocean in the north and the North Sea in the east.

P2: Everyone who was born in Britain is British. People from England are English. People from Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland are not English. They are Scottish or the Scotts; Welsh and Irish. People from Scotland and Wales don’t like it when they are called English.

More than 56 million people live in Britain. Many of them live in big industrial cities like London. (Презентация 1, слайд 5) Manchester and Liverpool, for example, are big industrial cities in the centre of England. But foreigners are often surprised by the fact that much of land in Britain is open country.

Everyone in Britain speaks English. But in some parts of Scotland and Wales people speak different languages as well. The Welsh are especially proud of their language.

Р 3; Great Britain is a parliamentary monarchy. There are two heads in the country. One is the Queen, and the other is the Parliament. Almost all the power belongs to the Parliament, as the Queen is only a formal ruler of the country. In other words, Queen Elizabeth II is the head of the state but the Parliament has the supreme authority. The Queen has also a number of ministers, who bear the responsibility for her royal acts. An interesting fact is that Great Britain doesn’t have any written constitution, but has only a set of laws made by the Parliament. Official residence of the Queen is Buckingham Palace, in London. However, she has also some other residences in Britain. The Parliament has two chambers: the House of Lords and the House of commons. The most important and powerful one is the House of Commons, which contains of 650 members. . The House of Lords consists of nearly 1200 peers. The head of the House of Lords is the Lord Chancellor. This House has no real power but has the responsibility to be an advisory council. The interesting fact about the House of Lords is that it’s a hereditary chamber.

The British Isles

The British Isles consist of two large islands, Great Britain and Ireland, and about five hundred smaller ones.

Great Britain, the largest island in Europe, includes England, Scotland and Wales. It is separated from Ireland by the Irish Sea, from the European Continent by the North Sea, the English Channel and the Strait of Dover. Great Britain and Northern Ireland form the United Kingdom.

The greater part of the surface of England and Ireland is flat. The surface of Scotland and Wales is mountainous. The highest mountain in the United Kingdom is Ben Nevis in Scotland. The chief rivers can be used by ships. They have slow currents and broad mouths. So the rivers are suitable for commerce. The coastline has excellent harbours. Ladies and gentlemen!

Our plane is about to land in London.

Let’s have an exiting excursion about the town.

London is one of the oldest cities in Europe. It was built by the Romans. The Romans went to England about two thousand years ago. They built a town on the River Thames. The place for the town was very good. Soon the Romans built a bridge over the River Thames. The name of the town was Londinium. The Thames has always been part of London's history. Until 1749 there was only one London Bridge and it looked very strange. There were houses and shops on the bridge. Now there are 27 bridges over the Thames in London and 8 tunnels under the river. The Romans also built a lot of roads from Londinium to other parts of Britain. Londinium got bigger and bigger. By the year 400 there were fifty thousand people in the town. But soon the Romans left Britain.

At the beginning of the 11th century England was already a big country and London was an important city. In 1066 William the Conqueror and his people went to England from Normandy in France. William the Conqueror became King of England. All Kings and Queens of England lived m London. It became the biggest city in England. By 1600 there were more than two hundred

thousand (200 000) people in London. Nowadays London has got more than 7 million people and that's 13% (per cent) of British population.

The date of the 2nd of September, 1666 is well-known to everybody who is interested in the history of the British capital. This is the date of the Great Fire in London. The fire burnt for four days and destroyed 80% of the city. More than 250 thousand people lost their homes. In 1666 most houses in London were built of wood and stood near one another. On Saturday, 2 September, a fire started in the house of the king's baker, near London Bridge. There was a strong wind from the river and soon the next house started burning and then the next and the next. Such was the beginning of the Great Fire of London. It burnt for 4 days until Thursday. After the Great fire people built a new city. By 1830 there were more than one and a half million people in London.

London is the capital of England. Londoners consider that in fact there are three cities in their native city, in other words, three main parts of it. They are the City of London, the East End and the West End. The City is really the heart of London. It is the oldest part of London. Many people work in the City but very few live there. There are many banks and offices there. There are some interesting places in the City or near it. One of them is the Tower of London. During its long history the Tower of London was a fortress, a palace, a prison and even the King’s Zoo.

When William the Conqueror became the King of England he settled in London. Many of his people lived in London too. But William was afraid of the English who lived in London. So he built the White Tower to live in it. Its square walls are white and very tall. The White Tower is one of the most important and beautiful buildings of the Tower of London. Now it is a museum. You can see a lot of interesting things in its halls. There are black ravens in the Tower of London. People keep them in the Tower of London and look after them very well. They believe that London will be rich while ravens live there d even the King's Zoo.

St. Paul's Cathedral is one of the greatest English churches. It is situated not far from the Tower of Lon¬don. The famous English ar¬chitect Sir Christopher Wren built it in the 17th century after the Great Fire. It took Sir Christopher Wren 35 years. It is a beautiful building with many columns and towers. In one of its towers there is one of the largest bells in the world.

The center of London is Trafalgar Square. Some people say it is the most beautiful place in London. In the middle of the square stands a tall column. It is a monument to Admiral Nelson. Four bronze lions look at the square from the monument. There are two beautiful fountains in the square. It takes people about 15 minutes to get from Trafalgar Square to Buckingham Palace. The Queen of England lives in Buckingham Palace. It is a wonderful building with a monument in front of it. This monument is the Queen Victoria Memorial.

Parliament Square is very large. The long grey building of the Houses of Parliament with towers is here. The famous clock of Big Ben is in one of the towers of the Houses of Parliament. Big Ben is the name not only of the clock but of the bell of the clock as well. You can hear the sound of Big Ben every hour in London. The clock and the bell got their names after Sir Benjamin Hall. He was a tall man, whose nickname was Big Ben. So people know the clock as Big Ben. The Thames is behind the Houses of Parliament and the bridge across it is Westminster Bridge.

There are about 10 thousand streets in London. Most of the streets are not very wide. Oxford Street is London's main shopping centre. People from all over the world shop in Oxford Street. Great Russell Street is famous for the British Museum. The British Museum is very old. It was founded in 1753.

In London you can find some of the best theatres, cinemas and museums. One of the famous London theatres is the Royal Opera House or Covent Garden. It is interesting to know that Covent Garden used to be in the centre of the vegetable market. The "Odeon" is the famous London cinema.

You can find many old and beautiful parks in the city. The largest park in London is Hyde Park. It is one of the most popular places on hot summer days. There are many other pleasant parks and green squares there too.

Teacher. I think you were greatly impressed by London’s beauty. It was really an exciting experience, wasn’t it?

Pupil. Yes. it was. I loved my tour in England. I had a really great time.

T.: Hello, my dear! I’m glad to see you. How are you? You must be tired after all you lessons, but I hope our lesson will be interesting. We are going to speak about Education in Great Britain and Russia.

2. Активизация речевых навыков, фонетическая зарядка

Education is very important in our life. An educated person knows a lot about many things. He always tries to deepen and improve his knowledge. For educated people it is easier to stand up all difficulties and they have a purpose in their life.

But there is another point of view. Look at the screen. There is a comic poem about studying. Let’s read it one by one.

Students read.

Do you agree with the author? Why do you personally go to school? Is it important to study?

Students answer.

No, I don’t agree. It’s important to study. I go to school because:

It’s interesting

I like to chat with my classmates and teachers

Want to get a good job

Want to enter the University

Want to know about different spheres of life

School makes me polite, helps to understand other people

So, we come to a conclusion that it’s important and interesting to study. And now it’s high time to check your homework. I asked to make a poster “My perfect school” and learn by heart words from Word list, 3 module. Now we will find out how you succeed in it. The poster is great, I liked it very much! And let’s work with vocabulary.

You can see on the screen different school subjects. When the picture changes or becomes bigger you name the subject. Do you understand?

Students answer.

Add some other subjects to this list. And tell me which subjects do you like and which, in your opinion, are the most useful?

Students answer.

Now, let’s activate your vocabulary connected with education in general.

There are some words on the screen. I will give a definition or show you this and you will me the word. Ok?

Attend – the synonym to be present at classes or visit classes.

Cheat – act dishonestly during the exam or test

Fail – to be unsuccessful during the exam (not to pass)

Extra-curricular – activities or subjects which are not a part of the usual school course

Compulsory – if children must go to school to get secondary education, it means that secondary education is… .

Vocational – a course or school, that prepare you for a job

Comprehensive – a kind of school for students of all abilities

Break – a period of time between lessons used for rest or snack

Headmaster – a teacher who is in charge of school, the main teacher you may say

Education – the process of getting knowledge
