Ryazan is one of the Central Russian cities. First, the city was called Pereyaslavl. The city has a violent history, it was attacted by the Tatar-Mongol yoke.
In December 1237 Pereyaslavl became the new capital of the Principality. In the XIV century the city became a trade and craft center. At the same time the construction of the Kremlin began.
In 1778, the town got the name of Ryazan. Its people always distinguished by courage and daring. They were in the first ranks to defend their homeland. Ryazan remembers and honors its heroes. Their names are immortalized in the names of streets and squares.
The great physiologist academician I. P. Pavlov and the founder of modern Astronautics K. E. Tsiolkovsky were born in Ryazan.
The city has many attractions such as the famous Cathedral of the assumption, built in the late XVII century. This magnificent building more than Basil's Cathedral in Moscow. Now the Cathedral is Museum and the temple at the same time.
Another sightseeing is Historical and archaeological Museum-reserve "Old Ryazan" that is an ancient settlement on the location of the capital of the Ryazan Principality.
Ryazan art Museum is one of the oldest museums in Russia. Its collection includes over ten thousand original works of Russian and Western European artists of the XV - XX centuries.

Я бы хотела рассказать о своем родном городе. Мой родной город – Рязань. Он расположен на реке Оке, недалеко от Москвы. Население нашего города – более 500 000 человек.
Его первое название – Переяславль Рязанский. Он был основан в 1095 году. Много лет назад Рязань находилась в 60 км от Переяславля, недалеко от Спасска. Это был очень богатый и известный на всю страну город.
Мой родной город очень красивый. Нельзя не восхищаться красотами Рязани. В центре Рязани расположен Кремль и памятники древнерусской архитектуры. Они являются отображением истории нашего города. Кремль впечатляет всех, кто его посетил. Архитектурный ансамбль Кремля состоит из 11 памятников прошлого.
Рязань – город машиностроительной индустрии, радиоиндустрии, химической и электронной индустрии.
Молодые люди могут получить высшее образование в государственных университетах. В Рязани более семидесяти средних школ и несколько колледжей.
Рязань известна своим Кукольным театром, Драматическим театром, концертным залом и цирком.
Мой родной город – родина многих известных людей: писателей, художников, композиторов, военных. Мы гордимся своими именитыми земляками (Павловым, Мичуриным, Циолковским, Есениным, Полонским, Голубкиной, Новиковым и многими другими). Я очень люблю свой родной город!

Introduction
Learning English, students usually get a lot of information about English-speaking countries, their history, outstanding people, cities, towns and tourist attractions. It goes without saying that it is very important. However, to know and learn about the place where you live is absolutely necessary for every schoolchild. That is why we have chosen our native town as a theme of our project. Besides, we cannot ignore the fact that knowledge of local history helps students to understand the existing similarities and differences between cultures. Furthermore, we should not forget that it is essential for learners to be able to characterize their own culture and history for representatives of other countries. Thus, we think that our project will help us and our fellow-students to get a more profound cultural awareness.
From the History of Ryazan
The Foundation of the Town
According to the historical documents Ryazan was founded in 1095. The town was situated on a high hill between two rivers: the Trubezh and the Lybed, not far from the Oka River.
The land around the town attracted our ancestors by vast meadows, deep forests rich in animals and birds and the rivers rich in fish.
The original settlement of the Vyatichi (an eastern Slavonic tribe) was located here. People lived by crop-growing, hunting and fishing.
Ryazan was the capital of the Principality of Ryazan. It should be mentioned that the capital was what we now call Old Ryazan. It is a village now and it is situated 50 km to the south –east from modern Ryazan on the Oka River. So, as you see, first Old Ryazan appeared and it was the capital of the Principality of Ryazan.
Mongol-Tatar Invasion
In the 13th century Ryazan was the first to meet the invaders of the Golden Horde.
In 1237 Khan Baty came to Ryazan and all the Towns of the Principality were burnt down and their population was almost completely wiped out.
When speaking about Mongol-Tatar invasion one can’t help mentioning Evpaty Kolovrat. He was the warriors’ leader. He and his 1700 warriors were late for the battle against Khan Baty. That was why he followed the enemies and attacked them.
Mongol-Tatars were very surprised to see Evpaty Kolovrat and his warriors. They thought the dead people of Ryazan became alive.
The battle was terrible. All Russian people were killed. But the history remembers and honors them.
Pereyaslavl Ryazansky
This was the end of the history of Old Ryazan, because the town was often attacked by the enemies. And so another town, Pereyaslavl Ryazansky, as modern Ryazan was called then, became the capital of the Principality of Ryazan. That was in the mid-14 th century.
Great Principality
In the 12th and 13th centuries Ryazan was ranked as a Great Principality famous for its richness.
In 1521 Pereyaslavl Ryazansky became one of the parts of the Russian State. In 1778 according to the edict of Kathrine II Pereyaslavl Ryazansky got the name of Ryazan and 18 years later in1796 it became the centre of the Ryazan Province.
The General Plan of Ryazan
In 1780 the general plan of Ryazan was established.
As a result the town was divided into districts, straight central streets were planned, and new buildings that became the monuments of architecture were erected.
In the second half of the 19th century Ryazan became the transport centre. The railroad appeared which connected Ryazan with Moscow and other Russian cities. Industry and trade were developed here.
Modern Ryazan
At present Ryazan is a large city, the center of the Ryazan region, located 180 km southeast of Moscow, on the right bank of the Oki River. The city area is 224 sq.km.
The population of the city has grown from 36,809 in 1910 up to more than half a million nowadays. Our hometown is very beautiful. The Kremlin and its monuments of ancient Russian architecture are in the heart of the city. They are a reflection of its history. The Kremlin's architectural ensemble consists of 11 monuments of the past and impresses everyone who visits it.
Ryazan is a city of engineering, radio, chemical and electronics industries.
Young people can get higher education at public universities. Ryazan has more than seventy schools and several colleges.
Ryazan is also a cultural centre. It is known for its Puppet Theatre, Drama Theatre, Theatre on Sobornaya (the former Theatre for Young Spectators), Concert Hall and Circus.
Our hometown is a birthplace of many famous people: writers, poets, artists, composers, scientists, military men. We are proud of our prominent countrymen Evpaty Kolovrat, I.P. Pavlov, K.E. Tsiolkovsky, I.V. Michurin, F.A. Poletayev, S.A. Yesenin, J.P. Polonsky and many others.
In conclusion, we would like to say that we love Ryazan, and it goes without saying that we are proud of our city.
As a Russian proverb says:”To know means to love”. We believe this knowledge will help us understand, preserve and increase the legacy derived from previous generations. Moreover, working at this project will help us share our knowledge with those people who are interested in Russia and its culture.

My name is Pavel. I was born in a small town Vyazma. It is located on the Vyazma river, about halfway between Smolensk and Mozhaisk.
Nowadays Vyazma is a famous industrial city of Russia. The town’s main industries are engineering, leather working, graphite products, and flax textiles. Also there are many museums, parks, ancient churches and monuments in the Vyazma. In addition, my city is the native land of many famous people, such as the pilot Yury Yanov, starry actor Anatoly Papanov, and others. I’m proud to be living in this city.

My native city
Hello! My name is Olga and I am 17 years old. I want to tell you about my native city.
I live in Pskov city, which lies in the north-west of Russia. It is one of the oldest Russian cities, because it was founded in 903. Pskov is located on the Velikaya river. It has a significant historic importance: the river provided Pskov with access to the sea, via Lake Peipus and the Narva River. By the 14th century, the city became the capital of the sovereign Pskov Republic and was a trading post of the Hanseatic League. Later Pskov came under the control of Moscow and Russian Empire. So it is a very old place, with rich and fascinating history.
The population of Pskov is slightly more than 210 000 people. My native city is not big, but it is very comfortable. The climate is mild in my city, although closeness the Baltic Sea and Gulf of Finland influences greatly the weather conditions. Winter is long and mild, summer is warm, but not long. Fall and summer we have more precipitation than winter and spring.
Many attractions of my city are included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site. So, Pskov is a world-known as the city of ancient churches and buildings. Of course, a lot of beautiful new houses and shops are built there every year, but most central streets have preserved their historical look. Ancient churches are the most remarkable part of the architectural heritage of Pskov. My home town has a lot of unique churches of the 12th-16th centuries. The most popular places of interest in Pskov are the Krom (Kremlin), Trinity Cathedral, Mirozhsky Monastery, Snetogorsky monastery, St. Basil’s on the Hill and the Pskov Monastery.
It is also impossible not to say about Izborsk, a seat of Rurik’s brother in the 9th century and one of the most formidable fortresses of medieval Russia. Mikhailovskoe, the family nest of the famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, is among the other attractions of Pskov. I am very proud that the national poet of Russia wrote some of the best known lines in the Russian language in my city.
Of course, there are many museums, theaters, cinemas, cafes and parks in the Pskov. I’ve already said, that my town is very interesting and comfortable. And in my opinion, it’s one of the most beautiful parts of Russia. I like Pskov and it will always be the best place on the planet for me.

Конечно, каждый год здесь строятся многие красивые новые дома и магазины, но большинство центральных улиц сохраняют свой исторический облик. Старинные церкви – наиболее значимая часть архитектурного наследия Пскова. Мой родной город обладает множеством уникальных церквей, возведенных в 12-16 столетиях. Наиболее популярными достопримечательностями Пскова являются Кром (Кремль), Троицкий собор, Мирожский монастырь, Снетогорский монастырь, Храм Василия Блаженного и Псковский монастырь.
Также невозможно не упомянуть о Изборске, резиденции брата Рюрика в 9 веке и одной из самых неприступных крепостей средневековой Руси. Михайловское, семейное гнездо знаменитого русского поэта Александра Пушкина, также стоит выделить среди достопримечательностей Пскова. Я очень горжусь тем, что самый народный поэт России написал несколько известных строк на русском языке в моем городе.
Конечно, в Пскове есть множество музеев, театров, кинотеатров, кафе и парков. Я уже говорила, что мой город интересный и уютный. И, по моему мнению, он является одним из самых красивых регионов России. Мне нравится Псков, и он всегда для меня будет лучшим местом на всей планете.
