James Eugene "Jim" Carrey
(born January 17, 1962) is a Canadian-American actor and comedian. He has received two Golden Globe Awards and has also been nominated on four occasions. Carrey began stand-up comedy in 1979, performing at Yuk Yuk's in Toronto, Ontario. After gaining prominence in 1981, he began working at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles where he was soon noticed by comedian Rodney Dangerfield, who immediately signed him to open his tour performances.
Carrey's first starring role in a film was in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994). Through the 1990s, Carrey released one highly successful film after another, including The Mask in 1994, Batman Forever in 1995, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls in 1995, Liar Liar in 1997, and The Truman Show in 1998.
Carrey has won repeatedly nominations from the two major foreign press associations, with two Golden Satellite Award nominations and six nominations for Golden Globe Awards, winning two of the latter. He has been even more successful with MTV Movie Awards, with over 20 nominations and awards, some shared (as in the 1995 "Best Kiss" award shared with Lauren Holly). He has also been nominated three times for Saturn Awards.
Avril Lavigne ,
born on September 27, 1984, in Belleville, Ontario, Canada, spent most of her childhood in Napanee, Ontario. Lavigne began singing in church in church at a young age, and signed with Arista Records in 2000. Two years later, she released her debut album, Let Go . Thanks to hit singles "Complicated" and "Sk8er Boi," the record sold more than 15 million copies worldwide. Lavigne followed with the albums Under My Skin (2004), The Best Damn Thing (2007), Goodbye Lullaby (2011) and Avril Lavigne (2013).
Lavigne's music took a more contemplative turn with 2004's Under My Skin , which did not fare as well as her first album. Still she had two modest hits, "Don't Tell Me" and "Nobody's Home," and one Top 10 track, "My Happy Ending." While many of her songs explored relationship troubles and woes, Lavigne's personal life seemed to be going well. In 2006, she married fellow musician Deryck Whibley, of Canadian pop-punk band Sum 41.
Music hasn't been Lavigne's only interest. She launched her own fragrance called Forbidden Rose and created her own clothing line, Abbey Dawn, using a childhood nickname given to her by her father. Lavigne has also taken time out to help others. In 2010, she established the Avril Lavigne Foundation, which aims help young people with disabilities and serious illnesses.
Who Is Justin Bieber?
Justin Bieber is a Canadian singer and songwriter. Born in 1994 in Stratford, Ontario, Canada, to a single mother, Bieber took second place in a local talent competition at a young age. After his mother posted YouTube clips of her boy performing, Bieber went from an unknown, untrained singer to a budding superstar with a big-time record deal with Usher within two years. Bieber went on to become the first solo artist to have four singles enter the Top 40 before the release of a debut album. His 2009 album My World has gone platinum in several countries.
He later experienced significant media exposure from offensive activity. Nonetheless, the singer made his comeback in 2015 with his first No. 1 song, "What Do You Mean?" Bieber always had an interest in music. His mother gave him a drum kit for his second birthday and, as he tells it, he was "basically banging on everything I could get my hands on." But it was an obscure talent contest in his hometown, in which the 12-year-old Bieber finished second that put him on the road to superstardom. As a way to share his singing with family, Justin and his mom began posting clips of Bieber performing covers of Stevie Wonder , Michael Jackson and Ne -Yo on YouTube.
Celine Marie Claudette Dion
was born on March 30, 1968, in Charlemagne, Quebec, Canada. The youngest of 14 children of Adhemar and Therese Dion, she grew up in a close-knit musical family. Her parents formed a singing group, Dion's Family, and they toured Canada when Celine was still an infant. They later opened a piano bar, where the 5-year-old Celine would perform to the delight of customers.
At the age of 12, Celine Dion recorded a demo tape of a song she had written with her mother. They sent the tape to the manager and producer Rene Angelil, who handled the career of popular French singer Ginette Reno. After hearing the tape and inviting Dion to perform for him in person, Angelil signed her immediately under the condition that he would have complete control over her career. He mortgaged his own home to finance her debut album, La Voix du bon Dieu ( The Voice of God ).
In 1988, she won the Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin, Ireland, and her performance was broadcast live in countries throughout Europe, the Middle East, Australia and Japan.
Medical Professional, Doctor, Inventor (1891–1941)
Sir Frederick Grant Banting was a Canadian scientist and doctor noted for his contributions to the discovery of insulin. After graduating with a degree in medicine from the University of Toronto he joined the Canadian Army Medical Corps., serving in France during World War I. When the war ended in 1919, he returned to Canada, working part time as a medical practitioner in Ontario and later serving as the Resident Surgeon at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.
He soon developed a deep interest in diabetes, directing his studies to research methods for extracting insulin from the pancreas. Together with medical student Charles Best, he discovered a way to isolate insulin and effectively treat diabetic patients. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1923.
FIELDS, JOHN CHARLES
mathematician, university professor, and founder of the international medal for mathematics research known as the Fields Medal; b. 14 May 1863 in Hamilton, Upper Canada, son of John Charles Fields and Henrietta (Harriet) Bowes; d. unmarried 9 Aug. 1932 in Toronto and was buried two days later in Hamilton Cemetery.
In 1880 Fields took the gold medal in mathematics at the matriculation examinations for the University of Toronto. Since his mother was seriously ill, however, he remained in Hamilton, completing his first academic year through independent study. Following her death, he enrolled at the university in his second year; he would graduate as the gold medallist in mathematics in 1884. Over the years Fields published 38 mathematical articles. These would be listed by his phd student Samuel Beatty as an addendum to an obituary written for the Royal Society of London by Fields’s friend and colleague John Lighton Synge. In 1906 Fields brought out his only book, Theory of the algebraic functions of a complex variable (Berlin), which affirmed his reputation as the pre-eminent mathematician in Canada before World War I.
Inventor, Coach (1861–1939)
Born on November 6, 1861 in Almonte, Ontario, Canada, James Naismith was a Canadian and American sports coach and innovator. He invented the game of basketball in 1891. He is also credited with designing the first football helmet. He died in Kansas on November 28, 1939 at the age of 78.
By 1893 the game had become so popular that the YMCA began promoting it internationally, and in 1904 it served as a demonstration sport at the Summer Olympics in St. Louis. By 1936 the sport became an official event at the Summer Olympics in Berlin.
At the age of 26, Tyrrell was given his own field party to lead. He and his assistants traveled by canoe to an area north of the Bow River in southwestern Alberta. On a mission to search for coal deposits in the Red Deer River valley, on June 9 Tyrrell and his party instead found a giant skull in the area. He died on August 26, 1957, in Toronto, Ontario, at the age of 98. The Drumheller, Alberta, museum near where he made his Albertosaurus sarcophagus discovery housed the skeleton and was named the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology.
