Good day dear students! Do you remember the history of Halloween?

Halloween is the day or the evening before All Saints Day. Many Halloween stories and games are hundreds of years old. Then people believed in devils, witches and ghosts. Now most people don’t believe in devils.

American children celebrate Beggars Night as Irish children did in the 17th century. They dress up in Halloween costumes and go out into the streets to beg.

A favourite Halloween custom is to make a Jack-o’-lantern. The children scrape out a pumpkin and cut the eyes, а nose and а mouth.

They light a candle inside the pumpkin to scare their friends. They set jack-o’-lanterns in the windows.

You have learnt a lot about Halloween and today we are going to have a quiz! The quiz will show which of you is the best! First of all this magic hat wants to divide you into two teams. The first team’s name is Pumpkins; the second team is called Ghosts.

2. Речевая зарядка .

Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate,

The first one said: "Oh, my! It’s getting late!"

The second one said: "There are witches in the air!"

The third one said: "But we don’t care!"

The fourth one said: "Let’s run and run, and run!"

The fifth one said: "I’m ready for some fun!"

Oooo went the wind and out went the light

And five little pumpkins rolled out of sight

When witches go riding, and black cats are seen, the moon laughs and whispers, 'tis near Halloween.

The hard work is done. Let us begin the quiz!

3. Warming up . Стихи посвященные празднику: читают дети:

Pupil 1: Friendly Ghost

I’m a friendly Ghost, I’m a friendly Ghost,

Watch me fly, watch me fly,

I can fly right through the air

See how all the people stare.

Way up high in the sky

Halloween Night

See the owls gliding,

Coal black cats are hiding,

Ghosts go Boo, Ghosts go Boo

Pupil 3: Treat

(by Jack Prelutsky)

Trick or treat, trick or treat,

Give us something good to eat.

Give us candy, give us cake,

Give us something sweet to take.

Hurry up and give us some.

You had better do it quick

Or we'll surely play a trick.

Trick or treat, trick or treat, Give us something good to eat.

Halloween is a festival that is celebrated on the 31st of October. This day is the eve of All Saints' Day. The word “Halloween” is hundreds of years old. It comes from medieval England. But the origin of Halloween dates back hundreds of years to the Druid festival. They celebrated “All Hallows” Eve (in Old English “hallow” means “saint”). Long before this Celtic pagan tribes inhabited the territories of modern England. They thought that the year consisted of two parts – summer (bright part) and winter (dark part). The God of the Sun was taken prisoner during the winter. According to Celtic calendar the 1st of November was the day when the Druid New Year began. So, they believed that just before this day witches and other evil spirits were playing tricks on human beings to mark the beginning of “dark” winter and the reign of the Lord of Death. Many ghosts and witches on the Earth and that they met on October 31 to worship the devil. People lit bonfires and made sacrifice.

The old traditions can still be found in countries of Celtic influence today. For example, in the UK children wear scary costumes of ghost and skeletons and masks (false faces) and go trick-or-treating. Trick-or-treating is the main Halloween activity for children. But what is trick-or-treating? Children go from door to door saying, “trick or treat”. The neighbours give children treats like candies, fruit and money so that children do not play trick on them.

Another Halloween tradition is making jack-o'-lanterns out of pumpkins. Jack-o'-lantern is a carved hollowed-out pumpkin with a face carved on one side. They also carve out rounded eyes in pumpkins and put a burning candle inside them so that they become visible from far away. There is an Irish legend which says that jack-o'-lanterns were named after the man called Jack. He was a miser and could not enter heaven, neither could he enter hell because he had played jokes on devil. As a result, Jack must walk on the earth with his lantern until Judgment Day.

My Autumn Holidays

Most of the schoolchildren like summer holidays best of all. But my favourite holidays are in autumn. The only problem is that they are too short - one week. But it doesn`t mean we can`t enjoy them!

Autumn is the most wonderful time of the year. So I like spending my time in the park. When the weather is warm and sunny, my sister and I take our dog Roxie for a long walk. Roxie plays with her ball, runs with other dogs and barks at squirrels.

When it is rainy and windy I meet with my friends at the cinema to watch romantic comedies. Sometimes we have lunch in a cafe after that. Autumn is also a perfect season to do some shopping. I usually buy warm sweaters, gloves, scarves and new boots.

During my autumn holidays, I usually have time to read books, to cook meals for my family or to play computer games. I also do my homework, because I want to have good marks when we start studying again.

I think it is great that we have holidays in autumn!

British Holidays

Each holiday is good, but there are some of them that are really special and more popular than others.

New Year’s Day (December 31 – January 1) is a bank holiday. Like many nations around the world, British people celebrate it by hosting parties with their friends and families to await the countdown to the New Year. In Scotland they call it Hogmanay and celebrate it by having a party with friends and setting fireworks off. In many cities there are free celebrations that anyone can join.

Valentine’s Day (February 14) is celebrated in many countries around the world, although it is not a public holiday in most of them. This day has a Catholic origin and has been associated with romantic love since it was mentioned in one of Geoffrey Chaucer’s poems. Nowadays, it’s the day of anyone who is in love. On the Valentine’s Day people usually give to the person they love some sweets, a traditional heart-shaped card (“valentine”) and say, “Be my Valentine”.

Halloween (October 31) also known as All Hallow’s Eve, or All Saint’s Eve, is a yearly celebration observed in a number of countries on October 31. It is the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead. On this day children will dress up in costumes and go ‘trick or treating’ around the neighborhood. “Trick or Treating” involves knocking on someone’s door and saying ‘Trick or Treat’. That person gives them a treat (usually sweets). Children enjoy the holiday because they go home with a bag of sweets!

Guy Fawkes Night (November 5) is a firework festival associated with the tradition of celebrating Guy Fawkes’s failed attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605. It is an annual event dedicated to bonfires, fireworks and celebrations.

Christmas (December 25) is the most important holiday for British families. This is the day that people spend with their families. There are many Christmas traditions, but the most important one is about presents. Family members prepare their gifts and put them under the Christmas tree. In the evening they sit down around the table and enjoy the meal. Then they watch the Queen’s speech on the television as she delivers her traditional Christmas message to the people of the United Kingdom. After that, family eats the Christmas cake and goes to sleep. In the morning all the family members wake up and gather around the tree to find the presents that were prepared for them.

Boxing Day (December 26) is based on the tradition of giving gifts to poor people after celebrating Christmas. The word “boxing” refers to gift boxes, and has nothing to do with the sport.
