The Railway Children made by : Alexander ivanov

The Railway Children is a children's book by Edith Nesbit , originally serialised in The London Magazine during 1905 and first published in book form in 1906.

This is a story of three children, Roberta, Phyllis, and Peter, who live in a respectable suburban villa with a wonderful mother and father and a cook and servants, until one day great disgrace and poverty befalls them. Father is taken away to prison (but they do not know this at first), and they have to move to a poor cottage in the country near a railway line.

Left without servants, children learn to take care of themselves. And they spend all their free time near the railway, where they are waiting for incredible adventures, thanks to which, as well as the happy occasion and the “Green Dragon” daily express train, the children get acquainted with the Old Gentleman, who knows the secret of the disappearance of his father .

Mother writes stories to earn what little they live on and they get used to being poor and have to learn not to steal coal from the railway station, even if they have so little to keep warm by. Sometimes they argue and have crises, as one does, but in time they make many new friends, and amusing adventures aplenty happen near the railway and the canal. They develop the habit of waving to the train as it goes past and sometimes the people in the coaches wave back. Their friendly habits makes them one special friend in particular, who although he mostly just goes by in the train, eventually gets to know them, and helps them out in various ways. And somehow all the good things that they do add up together and end up coming back to them, and there is happy ending to it all.

They were the usual children except for the fact, that they were homeless. They ran away from the orphanage in the suburbs of London. The oldest of them, Mark, was almost 15. He still remembered the time when it was better in the orphanage, but everything has changed since then.
The second one was a girl whose name was Linda. She was 13 years old. She was bullied at the orphanage, that is why she decided to run away.
The youngest boy was 11 his name was Sam. He has never been to an orphanage, neither he has ever had a real home with a real mother and father waiting for him to come back from school with a bowl of hot soup.
The place they were used to call home was a little shed, located right next to the railway station. If any estate agent had ever seen it, he would have been terrified. This place didn't have any French windows or wide passages, there was no sitting room where ladies sit when they pay calls. Instead, there were broken windows with almost no glass, brick walls and a few tiles on the floor of the single room of the so-called home.
-Mark - Linda came in with a wide smile on her pretty pale face - I have got a present for you.
- Really? - Mark replied looking at the brick wall which ones had green wallpaper on it.
- Really! - The girl started smiling even wider.
- What's that?
- It's a casket. I braided it myself.
- Thank you - Mark smiled.

I’m just an ordinary person. My house is in a suburban street. My roof is tiled with red, clay tiles. Who’s ringing the church bells? Our house has French windows at the back. The estate agents will sell our house for us. None of my friends are dull. She read a poem aloud to her friends. When we move into our new house we will enjoy refurnishing it. When I was six years old I had mumps. The children played quietly in the nursery. I’ve got heaps of homework tonight. Merry Christmas to everyone. Don’t be cross with me. I didn’t mean to do it. It is unjust to punish the whole class if only one student is naughty. I can’t wait for winter to be over and done with. I had a dreadful nightmare last night. I like making model aeroplanes. This house is full of charm. The battery only lasted for one week. His inexperience meant that he was not very good at his job. His intentions were clear. He wanted to be the boss of the company. There was a big bang and the car stopped in the middle of the road.

Describing a character’s personality

The children’s father is fair, loving, funny and creative. (lines 34-39)

The mother is reliable and loving because she’s always there to help the children with homework and everything they need. She is creative and imaginative because she writes stories and poems for the children. She is also funny because she writes funny poems for them.

The father is fair because he is never unjust with the children. He is also funny and creative because he comes up with funny reasons why he doesn’t want to play a game with the children. He is loving because he cares about their feelings and wants them always to be happy.

3. Hometask: Ex. 7 p. 35 - Writing a diary entry

Suggested Answer Key

A dreadful thing happened today just three days after my birthday ― my brand new model train blew up. It really frightened the dog. He ran off and hasn’t come back yet. He was so scared. I can’t believe it, my perfect little engine is destroyed and all my Noah’s Ark people are smashed to bits. I am really upset. I tried not to cry but I couldn’t help myself. Everyone asked why my eyes were red but I told them I had got a cold.
