The gorilla is the largest representative of the family of great apes. The size of an adult male is amazing: height can reach 180 cm, weight up to 300 kg. The animal's body is covered with thick black fur. Sometimes there are specimens of grayish or brownish color. In adult males, a wide light stripe appears on the back closer to the age of 14.

Gorillas live in the most inaccessible parts of West Africa. They prefer dense equatorial forests and rocky mountains in the vicinity of water. These monkeys live in small groups. The number of animals in them can reach 10 individuals. The group consists of one or two males who have not yet reached puberty, several females with children, and an adult male heads the family. It is easy to recognize him by the silver stripe on his back.

Gorillas are vegetarians. They feed exclusively on plant foods: berries, fruits, grains and nuts. These animals are very voracious. They have to constantly move from place to place in search of food. These monkeys live mainly on the ground, as they are too heavy to climb trees. Only sometimes females with their babies climb the lower branches of trees.

The leader takes care of all family members. He gives them commands to settle down for the night or get up in the morning, paves the way for the whole group to pass through the thicket of the forest, settles quarrels and conflicts in the family. In case of danger, he rushes to the defense of his wards. These animals are almost not aggressive. They always try to scare off the enemy to the last. To do this, the male gorilla rises to his feet, makes terrifying grimaces, hits his chest, which hums like a drum, emits heart-rending screams similar to thunder. At these moments, the hair comb on his head rises and falls. He rushes into the attack only as a last resort, protecting his family to the last drop of blood. And in this situation, the animal is very dangerous. Even a wounded gorilla can kill a person with one kick in the stomach.

The responsibility for raising babies in the group lies with the females – their mothers. But, if the cubs become orphaned, the silver-backed leader takes full care of them. He wears them on himself, sleeps next to them, looks after their pranks. In an effort to protect the cubs, the male can engage in battle with anyone, even with poachers. Therefore, it often happens that when catching a cub, the head of the family is killed. Left without the wise guidance and protection of their patron, females and young males become helpless. They are doomed to perish if some lone male does not decide to lead the group.

Gorillas are rare animals. But poachers continue to ruthlessly exterminate these monkeys. They catch the cubs to sell them to human traffickers. They kill adult animals, trying to get their skulls and hands – a kind of souvenirs for lovers of the exotic. The meat is used to prepare dishes for tourists – lovers of African cuisine. Despite all the measures taken to combat poaching, it is not possible to cope with it. For the local population, this is often the only available way to earn money.

Gorillas are herbivorous animals. Sometimes they can also feed on nuts and fruits. They rarely drink water, because plants contain sufficient amount of it.

Chest-beating is a well-known characteristic feature of gorillas. However, this is mostly used for threatening and rarely indicates that a gorilla is going to attack. The gesture symbolizes all the power and strength of this animal. Sometimes when a gorilla is really infuriated, it can bite.

Gorillas are the largest of the primates. They are ground-dwelling and predominantly herbivorous. They inhabit the forests of central Africa. Gorillas are divided into two species and (still under debate as of 2008) either four or five subspecies. The DNA of gorillas is highly similar to that of a human, between 95 and 99% depending on what is counted,[3] and they are the next closest living relatives to humans after the two chimpanzee species.
Gorillas' natural habitats cover tropical or subtropical forests in Africa. Although their range covers a small percentage of Africa, gorillas cover a wide range of elevations. The Mountain Gorilla inhabits the Albertine Rift montane cloud forests of the Virunga Volcanoes, ranging in altitude from 2,200–4,300 metres (7,200–14,100 ft). Lowland Gorillas live in dense forests and lowland swamps and marshes as low as sea level, with Western Lowland Gorillas living in Central West African countries and Eastern Lowland Gorillas living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo near its border with Rwanda.

The American physician and missionary Thomas Staughton Savage and naturalist Jeffries Wyman first described the Western Gorilla (they called it Troglodytes gorilla) in 1847 from specimens obtained in Liberia.[5] The name was derived from the Greek word "Γόριλλαι", (Gorillai), a "tribe of hairy women"[6] described by Hanno the Navigator, a Carthaginian navigator and possible visitor (circa 480 BC) to the area that later became Sierra Leone.

The closest relatives of gorillas are chimpanzees and humans, all of the Homininae having diverged from a common ancestor about 7 million years ago. Human genes differ only 1.6% on average from their corresponding gorilla genes in their sequence, but there is further difference in how many copies each gene has.
Until recently there was considered to be a single gorilla species, with three subspecies: the Western Lowland Gorilla, the Eastern Lowland Gorilla and the Mountain Gorilla.] There is now agreement that there are two species with two subspecies each. More recently it has been claimed that a third subspecies exists in one of the species. The separate species and subspecies developed from a single type of gorilla during the Ice Age, when their forest habitats shrank and became isolated from each other.
Primatologists continue to explore the relationships between various gorilla populations. The species and subspecies listed here are the ones upon which most scientists agree.[citation needed.
