My name is William Shakespeare. People say I am the world's greatest poet and dramatist. I was born on April 23, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. My mother, Mary Arden, was a daughter of Robert Arden, a farmer. My father, John Shakespeare, was a glover who had an office at Stratford-upon-Avon.

I got my education at the Grammar School. I got married in 1582 to Anne Hathaway and had three children, a daughter and two sons.

We lived in Stratford.At that time actors and actresses visited Stratford-on-Avon. I liked to watch them. I was fond of their profession and decided to become an actor. Then I went to London. There I became an actor and began to write plays too. I worked in the modern theatre “Globe”. 14 years later I became a part owner of the Globe theatre in London.

The public theatres for which I wrote my plays were quite different from those of today. They were built of wood. The stage projected far out into the pit where the spectators stood, so they were very close to the players' feet. Round the pit there were tiers of galleries, one over the other. The galleries were roofed, while the pit was open to the sky.

Since the pit of the theatre was open to the sky, the performance depended entirely upon the weather. Flags were raised when a play was to be given, but if the weather suddenly changed for the worse, the flags were pulled down and the performance did not take place.

Actresses were unknown on the stage, and all women's parts were played by boys or young men.

I wrote 37 plays altogether. Among my plays there are historical dramas, comedies, great tragedies, romantic dreams. I’m also known as the author of 2 long poems and 154 sonnets.

Teacher: The first task is to guess whether it is true or false. I’ll read some sentences about our guest’s life and you must choose (T) or (F).

Our guest was born on April 23, 1564 and he died also this date, April23, 1616.(T)

His father, John Shakespeare, couldn’t write. (T)

His mother was a daughter of the farmer. (T)

W.Shakespeare married when he was 18 years old. (T)

He had 3 children: a daughter and twin sons. (T)

In the 16th century there were many theatres in Britain. (F)

Globe Theatre was situated on the bank of the River Thames. (T)

Nowadays Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre is opened all year round. (F)

W.Shakespeare wrote 37 plays. (T)

Teacher: What Shakespeare’s great works do you know?

Teacher: This wonderful love story is about two lovers, Romeo and Juliet. Unfortunately, they died, but they didn’t stop loving each other. They stayed young forever! Listen to this beautiful melody and read the first part of the text “Romeo and Juliet”.

To dig the dust enclosed here;
Blessed be he that spares these stones,
And cursed be he that moves my bones”.

A monument was opened to the memory of the great playwright in the Poet’s Corner in Westminster Abbey. I’d like to finish our lesson with the words of an English poet, polemicist and politician John Milton. (слайд 24) His words were translated by famous Russian poet and translator S.Marshak.(ученик читает стих) (слайд 25)

And there are very wise words written by W Shakespeare in Sonnet 18. Read them.(слайды 26-27).(Ученик читает отрывок из сонета и перевод)…….

So long as men can breath or eyes can see,

So long lives this and this gives life to thee.

To be, or not to be, that is the question:
Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune:
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing, end them? To die; to sleep,
No more; and, by a sleep, to say we end
The heart ache, and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh in heir to, ‘tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish ‘d. To die; to sleep;
To sleep!

Быть или не быть – таков вопрос;

Thy glass will show thee how thy beauties wear,
Thy dial how thy precious minutes waste;
The vacant leaves thy mind’s imprint will bear,
And of this book this learning mayst thou taste.
The wrinkles which thy glass will truly show
Of mouthed graves will give thee memory;
Thou by thy dial’s shady stealth mayst know
Time’s thievish progress to eternity.
Look, what thy memory can not contain
Commit to these waste blanks, and thou shalt find
Those children nursed, deliver’d from the brain,
To take a new acquaintance of thy mind.
These offices, so oft as thou wilt look,
Shall profit thee and much enrich thy book.

The name of William Shakespeare is known all over the world. A famous English poet and playwright was born on April 23d,1564, in Stratford-on-Avon.

His father, John Shakespeare, was a glover and a dealer in corn, meat and wool. William’s mother Mary Arden was a daughter of a rich farmer. In his childhood William went to the Grammar School where, besides reading and writing, he was taught Latin.

When actors visited Stratford William liked to watch them. He was interested in that profession and decided to become an actor himself.

Being 18 Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway, a farmer’s daughter. They had a daughter Susana and twins - son Hamlet and daughter Judith.

In 1587 Shakespeare went to London, to find a job, where he began writing plays.

He wrote most of his plays for the Globe Theatre. At the same time he was an actor, a poet, and a writer of drama.

Shakespeare wrote 154 sonnets, 2 long poems and 37 plays

The first period of his creative work consists of comedies and histories such as “ King Henry V”, “King Richard III” and others. Here the writer showed historical events and dramatic characters.

All of Shakespeare’s famous tragedies (“Romeo and Juliet, for example) appeared between 1600 and 1608. This was the second period of his literary work. This period began with the tragedy “Hamlet ” which was a great success . “King Lear”, “Othello”, “Macbeth ” belong to the second period.

Shakespeare’s plays of the third period are called romantic dramas: “The Tempest”, “The Winter Tale”, “Henry VIII”.

His plays contain many good morals and ethical lessons, which can help those who read them to be better, wiser and happier.

In 1612, Shakespeare left London. Nobody knows what he did during the last years of his life. He died on April 23d, 1616, and was buried in a Holy Trinity church in Stratford.

To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them.

To die: to sleep; No more;

And by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache, and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wished.

To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: aye, there's the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come,
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause: there's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life;

Быть иль не быть – таков вопрос;

Того, что бедствия так долговечны;

“ Romeo and Juliet”

R. - But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks?
It is the East, and Juliet is the sun.
Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon,
Who is already sick and pale with grief,
That you her maid are far more fair than she:
Be not her maid, since she is envious;
Her vestal livery is but sick and green
And none but fools do wear it; Cast it off.
It is my lady, O, it is my love!

J. - O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore are you, Romeo?
Deny your father and refuse your name;
Or, if you will not, be but sworn my love,
And I'll no longer be a Capulet.

R . - Shall I hear more, or shall I speak at this?

J. – It is but your name that is my enemy;
You are yourself, though not a Montague.
What's Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O, be some other name

Завистницу-луну убей, о солнце;
