3. Введение в иноязычную атмосферу.
Well, British people like their country and they have got a lot of interesting proverbs concerning their country and traditions. That is why the epigraph of our lesson is the English proverb “There is more good victuals in England, than in seven other kingdoms”. How do you understand this proverb? Do we have any equivalents in Russian language? Учащиеся высказывают свои мнения о смысле данной пословицы и пытаются подобрать подходящий эквивалент в родном языке.
II. Основная часть урока.
1. And now we are going to complete an interesting task. We need two teams. The passenger plane touched down at seven cities in the UK. See if you can find the names of those cities by putting together the jumbled word pieces correctly in pairs. Учащиеся делятся на две команды. Они сопоставляют части слов, записывают названия городов.



Keys: Cambridge, Liverpool, London, Bristol, Newcastle, Manchester, Belfast.
Then try to find them on the map. Учащиеся выходят к доске по одному от каждой команды и на картах Великобритании с помощью магнитов отмечают найденные города.

Let’s begin our lesson. The topic of today’s lesson is the land and the people of Great Britain. We start with the phonetic drill.

There was a lady who lived in Belfast
She was fond of making breakfast
But her husband left for Liverpool
In order to buy a rubber swimming-pool.

Before speaking about the UK let’s revise some proper names.
Who will tell us about geographical position of the UK?
Now answer my questions:
What is the official name of the state which is situated in the British Isles?
What countries does the UK consist of?
What is the capital of Scotland (Wales)?
What sea separates the two islands?

Listen to the dialogue about the people of the UK and be ready to answer the questions.

  • - Let’s speak about the people of the UK. You know that everyone who was born in Britain is British. People from England are English.
  • - Yes. But what about people from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?
  • - They are not English. They are Scottish, Welsh and Irish. By the way, they don’t like when they are called English.
  • - It’s really very interesting. Do you know how many people live in Britain?
  • - More than 56 million live there.
  • - In what cities do they live?
  • - Many of them live in big industrial cities like London. Manchester and Liverpool are big industrial cities in the centre of England.
  • - I know that there are many lonely hills, quiet rivers, deep lakes and just farmlands especially in the south of the country.
  • - Yes, you are quite right.
