Teacher: Good afternoon, boys and girls! I am glad to see you. Sit down, please. I see you are in good mood. I am sure you are full of energy and ready to work hard. Now, let’s begin our lesson.

The word “music” originates from the Greek word ‘muse’.

MUSA - GODDESS of MUSIC

Music is the art combining sounds of voice or sounds of musical instruments.

Each man’s life begins with mother’s lullaby. Since that first introduction man’s life surrounded by musical sounds and melodies. And today we will have a talk about music in our life.

Look at the blackboard, read and translate quotations about music. And then give me your own definition of the word ‘music’.

  • Music is the universal language of the world/ (Longfello),
  • Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent (V.Hugo),
  • Now, children, give me your own definition of the word “music”. What is music for you?

Pupil 1: It is a reflection of our lives.

Pupil 2: It is the mirror of our lives and life problems.

Pupil 3: Music is the world of wonderful sounds.

Pupil 4: Music is the main part of people’s life.

Teacher: When do you usually listen to music?

Pupils: When I am tired, happy, unhappy, lonely, sad.

When I do my homework, clean the rooms or do nothing

Teacher: What styles of music do you know?

Pupils: Pop music

Classical music камерная

Teacher: Listen to the piece of music and guess what styles of music is it?

  • Folk song (звучит русская народная песня)
  • Jazz (Miles Davis - Cool Jazz)
  • Rap (Eminem - "Rap God" )
  • Rock (Bon Jovi - It's My Life)
  • Classical (Four Seasons ~ Vivaldi)

Teacher: What kind of music do you like?

Pupil 1: I prefer listening to Jazz. Jazz became more and more popular. Today, people all over the world play jazz. People who like jazz always remember American jazzman Louis Armstrong.

Pupil 2: I am going to tell you about rock. It is my music! As for me I prefer rock all the year round, because it can express all kinds of my mood. I can find a firm support in rock. Within this music I feel strength and stability. Rock music, or, rather rock-n-roll, appeared in the 1950-s. The first rock music is connected with the names of Elvis Presly, Chuck Berry, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, The Doors and some others.

Pupil 3: I am fond of folk music. This music lives on for centuries. Every nation has its own national music and dance ensembles and choirs. The British are very fond of their folk music. They held special Folk Festivals, where the young can learn about their national culture and folk music. It is a pity we don’t know much about Russian folk music.

Pupil 4: I love pop music. The dictionary defines pop music as “modern popular music of a simple kind with a strong beat and not usually of lasting interest, liked especially by younger people”. I think it is not difficult for understanding. It’s unusual and exciting and it’s the way of sharing all our hopes and fears. I like to know more and more about popular talented groups and singers I like.

Pupil 5: I want to tell you about classical music. As for me I have found classical music the closest to my soul. Most of the people of my age would think I’m a bit mad to love Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven . But I find classical music relaxing. This music has been living for centuries. It is heard in every corner of our land. Some people simply don’t understand classical music, but it has a deep intellectual appeal and it creates a special spiritual world for the listener that enriches his inner life and makes him happy.

Teacher: Some people say it is difficult to understand classical music. Classical music is our treasure and every country can be proud of its composers and musicians. Different composers from different countries have conquered the hearts of people all over the world. What names come to your mind when you hear the word "composer"?

8. Translate into English.

9. Try to comment on the following statements:

1.) Music is only a combination of pleasant sounds.

2.) Music is an integral part of our life.

3.) Tastes differ in the world of music.

4.) Music has a great influence on the human system.

5.) Some people have an idea of classical music as of complicated art it’s difficult to find the way into it.

1. Music is only a combination of pleasant sounds.

I don't agree that music is only a combination of pleasant sounds. It is an art, which reflects life, people's ideas and emotions. Music influences our mood and imagination, reflects our inner state and character, arouses deep emotions and makes us think. Music is also a weapon. It fights for light against darkness.

2. Music is an integral part of our life.

3. Tastes differ in the world of music.

Of course tastes differ in the world of music. There are different kinds of music: classical music, folk music, jazz, pop and rock music. But there is no style which is out-of-date. If we ask several people what kind of music they like, all of them will give different answers. A genuine musical composition written by a brilliant composer is immortal.

4. Music has a great influence on the human system.

It has been scientifically proved in America and Australia that music has a particular effect on us. Some music helps us feel relaxed, other types may be stimulating to the brain, some music promotes loving feelings, other–whip us hate, jealousy, violence. As a result, music is being used in hospitals. Doctors have found that sometimes music is far more effective than tranquillizers or sleeping pills.

5. Some people have an idea of classical music as of complicated art it's difficult to find the way into it.

Some people say it is difficult to understand classical music. But I have never been scared by the fact. As for me, I enjoy both classical and pop music. Classical music contains the powerful appeal for listeners. It addresses both our senses and intellect. I agree that classical music is a complicated art not as pop music but it is possible to understand it especially if you want. It arouses deep emotions among those who understands and feels it. It depends on people's intellect and education.

10. ( two pupils )To prove that tastes differ in the world of music two pupils from our group have examined the 11 th form students and asked them three questions. Now we are eager to know the results.

1. What kind of music do you prefer?

2. Do you like classical music?

3. Arrange six top singers from best to worst

a) Jennifer Lopez b) Elvis Presley c) Madonna d) Enrique Iglesias e) Britney Spears f) Ricky Martin

Total: 37 students.

We had a questioning among the 11 th form students. They were given three questions. As a result we can say that 17 students prefer pop music, 6 students prefer rock music, 5 students prefer rap and only one student prefers classical music. Eight pupils don’t have particular type of music they prefer. As for the second question 22 students like classical music and 11 students don’t. Four students listen to classical music only sometimes.

11. And now it’s time to read the text about American music. I’ll give you 2-3 minutes to read the text and understand the contents of it. Be ready to answer my questions.

Music in the USA

Since the United States were settled largely by Europeans, it is not surprising that classical music and folk-songs were brought over from the continent. Scottish and Irish ballads, German folk-songs have been sung in America by so many generations and so often that many Americans do not even know that these songs are of foreign origin. However, America produced its own music.

American music has also assimilated the peculiar rhythm of African music growing into the American reality together with the Negro slaves. Negro music was greatly influenced by Puritan hymns, resulting in Negro hymns “spirituals,” which are considered the highest achievement of American folk art. In the 19th century Negro lyric songs “blues” spread among the white population. Negro musical folklore preserved the rhythm and intonations of African music, but it was created in America and acquired new features. The usual themes of blues pieces are unhappy love, self-pity or longing for home. Blues has had a great influence on the development of jazz, rock and other types of modern music. The most popular modern blues musicians are Bessie Smith, Muddy Waters and B.B.King.

At the end of the 19th century the first symphonic orchestras were formed in the USA. At the turn of the centuries, the first opera house “Metropolitan Opera” was opened in New York. At the same time a new, truly American genre appeared– the musical, which combined the best features of the European operetta and American music. It became very popular and over the years has shown its ability to exist side by side with other musical genres. Authors try to use the libretto, songs and dances to achieve a real dramatic effect. The best examples are Loewe's My Fair Lady and Bernstein's West Side Story .The latter is a good example of the new form. Although it was the old pattern of musical comedies– love between a boy and a girl, the end is tragic– the boy is killed. Set in New York City, it shows hostile relationships and clashes between Puerto Ricans and native New Yorkers, resembling the story of Romeo and Juliet, but with a modern racial colouring.

In the 20th century another break took place in American music, again under the influence of national music. Jazz was perhaps the Negro's greatest contribution to American music. It emerged as a result of all kinds of rhythmical and melodic experiments. Jazz was free of convention and written arrangements. It has been made popular all over the country by such men as Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. Scott Fitzgerald called the 20s of this century the “Jazz Age.” Even serious composers like George Gershwin in America, and Stravinsky and Ravel in Europe were influenced by American jazz. George Gershwin used Negro themes and jazz elements in symphonic pieces. Porgie and Bess (1935) is the best example of a true unity of national roots and professional culture.

Thirty years after jazz another kind of popular music appeared– big beat (big rhythm). In 1954 the disc jockey Alan Freed started to broadcast the Negro rhythm-and-blues records. He called this music Rock-and-roll after an old blues “My Baby Rocks Me in a Steady Roll.” White musicians began to imitate this music. The big white stars were Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry. Rock-n-roll conquered Europe. Among the imitators of Chuck Berry was a group from Liverpool who called themselves “The Beatles.”

American “pop” music abounds in different trends and styles, but Americans have varied musical interests and at least 25 per cent are devotees of classical music. Boston, Philadelphia and San Francisco symphony orchestras are famous all over the country and abroad.

Answer the questions:

1. Why is it not surprising that classical music and folk songs were brought over from the continent?

2. What is “ spiritual”?

3. What spread among the white population in the 19 th century?

4. What are the usual themes of blues?

5. What has blues had a great influence on?

6. Who are the most popular modern blues musicians?

7. What break took place in American music in the 20 th century?

8. Whose contribution was jazz to American music?

9. How did Scott Fitzgerald call the 20s of the last century?

10. What composers were influenced by American jazz?

11. What kind of music appeared 30 years after jazz?

12. Who called this music Rock-and-roll?

13. Who are the big white stars of Rock-and-roll?

Today you’ve worked hard at the lesson and you’ve shown good knowledge. We know that tastes differ but everybody likes music because we can’t imagine our life without it. I am sure that everything you have learnt at the lesson will be helpful in your further life.

12. T: This girl has bought a cassette with the songs of the group “Red Alert”. If I’m not mistaken it’s a rock-group. But do you know the history of rock-music? Some students in your class are ready to speak about it. [5]

In the fifties in pop music of the USA rock’n’roll appeared. It was based on the Afro-American style rhythm and blues. But many people in the USA and even state authorities began to fight against rock’n’roll. Many senators, priests, public figures and teachers were against the new style of music because they didn’t want the white young people to mix with the black ones.

One of the pioneers of rock’n’roll was a young talented lorry-driver from Memphis Elvis Presley. His family wasn’t rich and he never learned to play a musical instrument. But he had a charming voice and a nice manner of singing. He gave many concerts, made a lot of long-playing records which were sold out very quickly, took part in TV and radio shows. He became very popular and very rich.

We have all grounds to say that Elvis Presley is considered to be the king of rock’n’roll.

Let’s listen to one of his songs.

At the end of the fifties - at the beginning of the sixties rock’n’roll became the phenomenon of mass culture. Many businessmen did their best to draw people’s attention to this kind of music: it was broadcasted over the radio, TV; a lot of new records of different singers were made. At first rock’n’roll music was about the youth’s problems but then the singers began to sing about love and everyday life. And a new type of music appeared on the basis of rock’n’roll. It was pop, a typical example of mass culture.

Meanwhile in Britain a new musical style was formed. It was called “British rock” or simply ”beat”.

Speaking about British beat-music we can’t but mention the city of Liverpool. Beat-music was called “Mersey-beat” there. The most typical example of Mersey-beat is the famous group “The Beatles”.

The Beatles, the first really important British pop group was formed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They came from Liverpool, a town in the north of England. The Beatles had their first hit record in 1962. They gave concerts in Germany and America where they had even greater success.

After 1965 the Beatles worked mostly on films and albums (long-playing records). In the sixties they created successful records and interesting films. The Beatles were very popular especially with the youth. Beatlemania was the word used to describe the reaction of fans all over the world.

In 1970 the group split up. Yet Lennon and McCartney– and the Beatles ? produced some of the most famous pop songs ever.

Let’s sing the song “Yesterday”.

The years of 1967 – 1968 were the flourishing years for rock music. A great role in it was played by the “underground”, an informal unity of actors, musicians, writers, artists. At that time there were such underground groups as “Pink Floyd”, “Soft Machine”, “Purple Gang” and others.

A typical rock-group had the following set of instruments: one or two electric guitars, a bass guitar and the drums. One of the main characteristic features of a rock-group is that the texts and music of the songs were composed by the members of the group.

There is no denying the fact that jazz and classical music greatly influenced rock music. Some rock musicians composed music to be played by a rock-group together with the symphony orchestra. Such a style of music was called art-rock. One of the groups that had the experience of performing music together with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was “Deep Purple”.

Now listen to the song of this group.

In the seventies teenagers lost their interest in rock-music and were carried away by music of the disco-style. No doubt you’ve heard the names of such groups as “Boney M”, “ABBA”, and many others.

Let's listen to a piece of music of this style.

Then at the end of the seventies young people became interested in the new style of hard rock which was called “heavy metal”. The musicians behaved very strangely on the stage: they jumped, ran, moved their bodies and did other strange things.

It should be taken into account that in the 1980s and 1990s young people got interested in the new rock culture. It was electronic rock and pop music. The representatives of this style performed rather professional and serious music. We can mention such groups as “The Human League”, “Depeche Mode” and others. There is no denying the fact that the appearance of video music contributed much to the spreading of this kind of music.

To finish all up I must say that there are many musicians and singers who have been popular with different people both young and not so young for many years. Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, “The Rolling Stones”, “Status Quo”, “U-2” and many others are among them.

13 . T: Thank you very much for your stories.

Everybody has his own favourite singer. Let’s play the game “Guess my favourite singer” .

Is this a man or a woman? When and where was he (she) born? What country does he (she) live in? Etc.

14 . T: At our lessons we often sing songs and of course you know many of them. Now I’m going to describe some songs and your task is to guess them.

This song is about a boy who has found a good wife for himself. But she’s a young thing and cannot leave her mother. (“Billy Boy”)

In this song the young man is sad because he has parted with his girl-friend last night. And now he is long for that. (“Yesterday”)

The next song tells us about a man who had two daughters. His elder daughter is the main character of the song. But one day she fell into the river and was drowned. (“Clementine”)

This song is based on the Bible. The event took place in the desert in one of the African countries. (“Go down, Moses”)

The fifth song tells about a woman who helps us in different difficult situations in our lives. The Beatles performed this song. (“Let it be”)

In this song a girl tells us about her love for music. When she starts to sing everybody listens to her. She thanks music because she can’t live without it. (“Thank you for the music”)

Yesterday,
All my troubles … so far away,
Now it looks as though they're here to …
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Suddenly
I'm not … the man I used to be,
There's a shadow hanging … me,
Oh, yesterday came suddenly.
Why … had to go
I don't know she wouldn't say
I said something …
Now I long for yesterday.
… ,
Love was such an easy …,
Now I need a place to …
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Why she had to go
I don't know she …
I said something …,
Now I … for yesterday.

I dont agree that music is only a combination of pleasant sounds. It is an art, which reflects life, peoples ideas and emotions.

Some music helps us feel relaxed, other types may be stimulating to the brain, some music promotes loving feelings, otherwhip us hate, jealousy, violence. As a result, music is being used in hospitals. Doctors have found that sometimes music is far more effective than tranquillizers or sleeping pills.

5. Some people have an idea of classical music as of complicated art its difficult to find the way into it.

It depends on peoples intellect and education.

Scottish and Irish ballads, German folk songs have been sung in America by so many generations and so often that many Americans do not even know that these songs are of foreign origin.

At the same time a new, truly American genre appeared- the musical, which combined the best features of the European operetta and American music. It became very popular and over the years has shown its ability to exist side by side with other musical genres. Authors try to use the libretto, songs and dances to achieve a real dramatic effect. The best examples are Loewe’s My Fair Lady and Bernstein's West Side Story .The latter is a good example of the new form. Although it was the old pattern of musical comedies - love between a boy and a girl, the end is tragic: the boy is killed.

Thirty years after jazz another kind of popular music appeared- big beat (big rhythm).
