A) ( Greeting ).

( Slide 1 – a map of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland)

You have been studying a large unit “The United kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland” and have already known a lot about this country.

Let’s check up how much you have learnt and remembered.

(Slide 2) Listen and repeat some words after me:

the United Kingdom, is situated, the north-west, Europe, Edinburgh, official, climate, changeable, thistle, daffodil, clover, whole.

3) Now look at the map of the UK and answer my questions:

Where is Great Britain situated?

How many countries does the United Kingdom consist of?

What are the capitals of these countries?

What is the official name of the whole country?

What is the climate of Great Britain?

What do the British people call the national flag?

What is the official language of the country?

3 ) (Slide 4) Let’s play “Snowball game”. Look at the keywords and speak about Great Britain.

4) (Slide 5) Now work in pairs. Tell each other about the flags and symbols of Great Britain, using your projects. Give marks to each other and put them into your self -control cards. Criteria for marks are on the blackboard.

2 correct sentences --- “3”.

5) (Slide 6) Look at the screen and say what the theme of our lesson will be today. (The theme of the lesson will be “London – the capital of Great Britain”.)

6) Liza has made a presentation “A Virtual Excursion Around London” and now she invites us to take part in it. (Pupils watch the presentation).

7) Now read the text about London on the sheets of paper and fill in the page “London --- the capital of England” in your booklets. Your time is 4 minutes.

8) Dear boys and girls ! Imagine that three British students have come to our place on the program of exchange. Use the chance and ask them questions about London. Cards with indirect questions will help you.

9) Now listen and match the numbers of descriptions with the names of the places of interest. Take pink cards and fill in them.

Today we have an unusual lesson. We’ll make a trip to London.

At your geography lesson you’ll also speak about this country, about the most famous sights of London you’ll learn some interesting facts about the sights. First of all, turn on your computers and find text “London” You should read the text read the text individually and discuss it with your partner and work in a poster, give information about the text.

London is the capital of Great Britain. It’s not only the capital of the country, it is a big port, one of the greatest commercial, cultural, political, economic and financial centers in the world. London lies on both banks of the river Thames. Its population is about 8 million people. London is divided into several parts: the City, the West, the East End and Westminster. The City is the busiest part of London. The West End is the richest part of London. The best hotels, shops, restaurants and theatres are situated there. The East End is the poorest part of London. There are a lot of factories and docks there. There are famous buildings such as; Westminster Abbey, the British Museum, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, St. Paul’s Cathedral.

Westminster Abbey is one of the most beautiful buildings in London. The ancient large church in London in which the coronation ceremony of almost all the English kings and queens has taken place. Many famous people are buried there.

The Tower of London

It was fortress, a royal palace and late a prison. The Tower of London was founded by Julius Caesar and rebuilt by William the Conqueror. It is a museum now. There are lots of interesting collections in the Tower.

St. Paul’s Cathedral – is the greatest work of England’s greatest architect, Christopher Wren. The Cathedral was begun in 1675 but was finished only in 1710, when Wren was almost eighty years old. There are memorials to many famous men of England. In the Cathedral.

Big Ben is one of the most famous clocks in the world. The English people built the tower and the clock in 1858. The bell weights 13,5 tons. The man in charge of the building was Sir Benjamin Hall. This man was very tall and his friends called him Big Ben. So they called the clock and the Clock Tower of the Houses of Parliament Big Ben.

Buckingham Palace is the London home of the Queen. It is a place where the Queen meets important visitors such as kings, queens or presidents from other countries.

Buckingham Palace is the official residence and principal work place of the British monarch. Buckingham Palace is like a small village. There is a police station, a hospital, a bar, two sports clubs, a disco, a cinema, and a swimming pool. There are 600 rooms. About seven thousand people work there. More than 50,000 people visit the Palace every year.
