---Good morning, students! How are you? Let us start. The topic of our lesson is “Mass Media in our life”. It’s no wonder that the 21 st century is regarded as information age. The mass media actually rule the world and play a very important role in our lives. The press, the radio, the Internet and television inform us of what is going on in the world and give us wonderful possibilities for education and entertainment.

To begin with, let us practice some words referring to our topic, name and write them on the blackboard, please.

--- транслировать по телевидению

--- иметь равные права

--- распространяться по стране

---пристраститься к интернет-играм

---принять участие в викторине

---жестокость на экране

---сделать музыку погромче

---And now let’s watch the presentation about mass media to know what kind of information they provide us with.

Презентация с текстом:

Mass Media consists of printed production, television, radio and the Internet. Mass Media provides us with necessary information on things and events happening worldwide 24 hours a day. And it also helps us to spend our leisure time. Its history begins with the first printed Chinese newspaper in 868 A.D. Europe saw its first book in 1453 when Johannes Guttenberg invented the printed press.

The influence of mass media is doubtless, but it has some benefits as well as drawbacks.

The very first benefit is information. Nowadays the information can be useful for people. It is very important for everyone because there are lots of things happening every minute in the world which can affect our professional and private life. And it makes news accessible: just turn on the TV or look through news sites and you will be kept currently informed.

Another useful purpose is education. Many people gain knowledge from the Internet and TV programmes. It is an easy and affordable day to cultivate intelligence.

And what about drawbacks? One shouldn’t rely on everything the newspapers say. Misrepresentations and bare-faced lie easily take place and misinform millions of people. Mass media can also manipulate the minds of the audiences.

Today we witness the influence of various sources of mass media on youth. Tons of meaningless TV-shows, glossy magazines and social networks steal young people’s time that could be spend on beneficial and healthy activities. They lose their own opinion and have nothing to say except the ideas heard from others.

To my mind we can’t imagine our lives without mass media. It is silly to avoid it as we can use its advantages. Though we should be careful and filter all information we get. I do my best to stay informed about the latest events and I am fond of searching in the Internet. Mass Media is a part of my life.

Students, what does each type of media provide us with? Answer the questions, please.

--- What kind of mass media do you prefer?

---Do you use it for entertainment or education?

---Where do you usually get news from?

---Can we believe in everything written in newspapers?

---What source of information helps you in studying?

  1. Монологи о любимом источнике информации (проверка д.з.).

Well, your home task was to prepare a small report about your favorite source of information.

  1. Деление на команды и обсуждение позитивных и негативных сторон каждого вида средств массовой информации.

And now let us divide into some groups and discuss what benefits and disadvantages every kind of mass media has. (учащиеся получают карточки с названиями вида Mass media, которое они должны обсудить).

  1. Аудирование. Прослушивание текста и выполнение задания.

You know there are many broadcasting companies in different countries. Listen to the information about them. Then match the countries, the names of broadcasting companies and the broadcasting programmes.

---Nowadays broadcasting companies have become symbols of their countries.

Over 99 per cent of British homes have a TV and the average British watches the “box” 26 hours a day. BBC (or the British Broadcasting Corporation) is a state company. Its two channels BBC 1 and BBC 2 do not show adverts. BBC 1 broadcasts popular programmes (the new, sports programmes, shows, children’s programmes, and soaps). BBC 2 shows TV plays, classical concerts, foreign films.

--- Americans also love watching TV. American CNN (or Cable News Network) broadcasts only news but it is popular all over the world.

---CBC (or Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) can be seen or heard almost anywhere in the country. The company broadcasts in English and in French. It broadcasts the news, shows, films and other popular programmes.

---At the moment there are two state channels on Russian TV: ORT and RTR. They broadcast different programmes (the news and shows, soap and children’s programmes, Russian and foreign films, sports programmes). They can be seen anywhere in the country. There are several other channels on Russian TV. One of them is KULTURA. It shows special programmes: cultural news, Russian and foreign classical films, the best performances, classical concerts, talk shows on culture and education. This channel is getting more and more popular.

The task (connect the names of the countries, channels and the names of programmes).

Russia news, sports programmes, shows, operas,

Classical classical concerts, foreign films

CBC cultural news, Russian and foreign films
