Even if you have never been to the Sahara Desert , you probably picture sand, heat and weary travelers dying of thirst. You may be surprised to learn that the world’s largest desert was once a fertile area where rain fell, streams flowed and grass and trees flourished. Elephants, buffaloes, antelopes and many other animals roamed around the territory of about 3 million square miles. Men and women lived there too, raising cattle and growing grain. Their pain­tings on the walls of caves have shown us what life was like when the Sahara was green.

Why did the Sahara die? The answer lies in the history of monsoon rains that bring moisture from western and central Africa into the Sahara. About 1500 years ago for some unknown reason, monsoon rains began to rain less and less over the Sahara. Slowly, over hundreds of years, the Sahara’s green pastures disappeared. The buffalo was replaced by the camel, an animal that uses water wisely. The Sahara became a land of sand dunes and treeless mountains. And so it remains today.

1. Артикли с географическими названиями

Как правило, имена собственные не употребляются с артиклем, но географические названия являются исключениями. Так перед некоторыми географическими названиями, например перед НАЗВАНИЯМИ ПУСТЫНЬ надо ставить артикль the :

the Gobi, the Sahara, the Kara-Kum, the Kalahari

2. Притяжательный падеж существительного

Как известно, неодушевленные существительные не ставятся в притяжательный падеж, так как им ничего не может принадлежать. Однако слова moon, sun, Earth, world, country, river, ocean, city, town можно ставить в притяжательный падеж, то есть часто встречаются такие конструкции: moon’s, sun’s, Earth’s, world’s, country’s, river’s, ocean’s, city’s, town’s

3. Множественное число существительных- исключений

При образовании множественного числа у существительного надо добавить к форме единственного числа окончание s/es. Как всегда исключений достаточно много, запомните пока следующие:

1. a man — men
2. a woman – women
3. a child — children
4. a mouse – mice
5. a ox-oxen
6. a foot — feet
7. a tooth — teeth
8. a goose — geese
9. a sheep — sheep
10. a deer – deer

Иногда возможны два и даже три варианта, например:
buffalo (ед.ч.) — buffalo (мн.ч.), buffalo(e)s
antelope (ед.ч.) — antelope (мн.ч.) или antelopes

Главное, запомните 10 существительных-исключений. В них-то уж никак нельзя ошибаться. Я как-то встретила в тексте gooses и уже обрадовалась, что язык идет по пути упрощения, однако оказалось, что это вовсе не гуси, а портновские утюги с S-образно изогнутой ручкой. Вот так)))

Задание (для изучающих английский язык):

2) Переведите следующие словосочетания:

• представить песок и жару
• утомленные путешественники, умирающие от жажды
• выращивать скот
• выращивать зерно
• муссонные дожди
• песчаные дюны
• безлесные горы

3) Перескажите текст.

4) Какой артикль употребляется перед названиями пустынь. Приведите примеры.

5) Употребляются ли неодушевленные существительные в притяжательном падеже и какие есть исключения? Приведите примеры.

6) Назовите 10 существительных — исключений, форму множественного числа которых нужно запоминать.

The Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world. The Sahara covers large parts of Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Western Sahara, Sudan and Tunisia. The sky is usually clear above the desert and the sunshine duration is extremely high everywhere in the Sahara. The people of the Sahara are of various origins. Arabic dialects are the most widely spoken languages in the Sahara. Its area of 9,200,000 square kilometres is comparable to the area of the United States.

The Kalahari Desert is a large arid sandy area in Southern Africa. Extend 900.000 square kilometres. Covering much of Botswana and parts of Namibia and South Africa. The Kalahari supports some animals and plants because most of it is not a true desert. There are small amounts of rainfall and the summer temperature is very high.
