Сочинение teaching as a career

Обновлено: 03.07.2024

If we are not indifferent to our future, while thinking about future career we are to pay attention to a number of important things. We should determine our abilities and inclinations, we should analyze job prospects, we must know whether the profession we have chosen will guarantee good living conditions and give promotion. We must be sure we’ll avoid unemployment or at least will be able to apply our skills and knowledge in other fields of human activity. There are many interesting and useful professions and it is really not an easy task to choose the right one. I began to think about my future profession at the age of (15). My favourite subjects at school were mathematics, physics and English. My teachers were well-educated people with broad outlook and deep knowledge of the subjects. They encouraged me in my desire to become a physicist. Now I know well what I'm going to do after finishing university. I didn't make a blind choice. It was not a sudden flash either. I opted for a career in teaching. I came to this decision little by little. It was my teacher of physics who aroused my interest in that field. Teaching is a very specific and responsible job. The success of educating and upbringing of children depends to a great degree on the personality of the teacher, his professional skills, moral principles, erudition and cultural background. This noble and challenging profession demands from a teacher constant creativity, enthusiasm, understanding of children and love for them, complete dedication to his cause. The teacher must be a model of competence, so he is a person who is learning as well as teaching all his life. Most jobs can be done within the usual office hours, but teacher's work is never done and evenings are mostly spent marking exercise-books and preparing for the next lesson. It is also a stressful job because you have to encourage your pupils and keep them interested. A good teacher treats his pupils with respect and values them as individuals. He understands that each child is unique and has special talents and capabilities. That's why he educates each pupil with special attention to his or her interests and encourages each one to be the best he or she can be. He helps children to develop their critical and creative thinking, to form their views and characters, their attitudes to life and to other people. He teaches them to work independently and cooperatively, to be helpful and useful. A good teacher will do his best to bring up honest and considerate, patient and tactful, self-confident, objectively-minded and self-disciplined people, able to meet many challenges of adult life in a rapidly changing world. I hope that I’ll never regret my choice and get a well-paid and interesting job afterwards. Maybe I should consider a job in a school as a school teacher of physics or handicrafts. All professions are good I think. What would we do without doctors, engineers, workers? Our life would be completely different without economists, lawyers and of course without teachers.

I wanted to try different professions, because all of them look very interesting. But my vocation is to be a teacher. I have decided that I want to be a teacher of maths. I love children and I am good in maths. Of course I have to learn many things yet and I do my best.

There are few teachers in my family and they are happy with this profession. Sometimes children can make them upset and my relatives can be very busy at school but in general this job makes them happy.

Actually I would like to be a teacher of mathematics and physics. These two subjects are my favorite ones. If I had a chance I would spend twice more time to study these subjects. At the end of school I have to pass exams and pass final tests to go to university.

I think for teacher it’s important to love your subject, to have patience and interest to the children, to explain over and over again. I am this kind of person. I am very attentive to details and I know how to manage with children.

From the other side the salary of a teacher in Russia is not so good. Unfortunately some professions without high education is paid better, than profession of a teacher. It’s not fair, but my choice is so. Maybe one day I will change my mind, but today I feel I am able to help our educational system.

According me this profession is noble, important and very interesting. It’s not only you gonna be a teacher, but also you have to learn many things from your children. The job has to make you happy and then every day you will wake up and go to work with smile.

Teaching as a Career

To teach effectively, you must possess considerable skill, knowledge, patience, caring, and commitment. But these are not enough. You also must possess understanding. You must understand yourself and those with whom you work. In addition, you must understand the various contexts in which you will work. For example, you will work in a classroom context: your classroom and its students will be similar to and different from other classrooms and groups of students. You also will work in a school and a school system. Failure to understand the relations between these contexts or how they can influence your teaching can lead to ineffective performance, frustration, and career change.

For those, who can meet the intellectual and social challenges of the job, teaching offers a bright and rewarding career. Most people express their faith in education. Modern society needs schools staffed with expert teachers to provide instruction and to care for children while adults work.

In our society teachers are given professional status. As experts and professionals, they are expected to use best practice to help students learn essential skills and attitudes. It is no longer sufficient for teachers to be warm and loving toward children, nor is it sufficient for them to employ teaching practices based on intuition, personal preference or conventional wisdom. Contemporary teachers are held accountable for using teaching practices that have been shown to be effective, just as members of other professions, such as medicine, law, and architecture.

Learning to be a good teacher in today’s world is a long, complex, and exciting journey. Beginning teachers should do their best to master the knowledge base and the skills required of a professional teacher.

1.2.: The Use of the Articles

What is an article? Basically, an article is an adjective. Like adjectives, articles modify nouns.

English has two articles: the and a/an. The is used to refer to specific or particular nouns; a/an is used to modify non-specific or non-particular nouns. We call the the definite article and a/an the indefinite article.

the = definite article

a/an = indefinite article

For example, if I say, "Let's read the book," I mean a specific book. If I say, "Let's read a book," I mean any book rather than a specific book.

Here's another way to explain it: The is used to refer to a specific or particular member of a group. For example, "I just saw the most popular movie of the year." There are many movies, but only one particular movie is the most popular. Therefore, we use the.

"A/an" is used to refer to a non-specific or non-particular member of the group. For example, "I would like to go see a movie." Here, we're not talking about a specific movie. We're talking about any movie. There are many movies, and I want to see any movie. I don't have a specific one in mind.

Let's look at each kind of article a little more closely.

Indefinite Articles: a and an

"A" and "an" signal that the noun modified is indefinite, referring to any member of a group. For example:

  • "My daughter really wants a dog for Christmas." This refers to any dog. We don't know which dog because we haven't found the dog yet.
  • "Somebody call a policeman!" This refers to any policeman. We don't need a specific policeman; we need any policeman who is available.
  • "When I was at the zoo, I saw an elephant!" Here, we're talking about a single, non-specific thing, in this case an elephant. There are probably several elephants at the zoo, but there's only one we're talking about here.

Remember, using a or an depends on the sound that begins the next word:

A historical event is worth recording.

Remember that these rules also apply when you use acronyms:

Introductory Composition at Purdue (ICaP) handles first-year writing at the University. Therefore, an ICaP memo generally discusses issues concerning English 106 instructors.

Another case where this rule applies is when acronyms or initialisms start with consonant letters but have vowel sounds:

An MSDS (material safety data sheet) was used to record the data. An SPCC plan (Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures plan) will help us prepare for the worst.

If the noun is modified by an adjective, the choice between a and an depends on the initial sound of the adjective that immediately follows the article:

  • a broken egg
  • an unusual problem
  • a European country (sounds like 'yer-o-pi-an,' i.e. begins with consonant 'y' sound)

Remember, too, that in English, the indefinite articles are used to indicate membership in a group:

  • I am a teacher. (I am a member of a large group known as teachers.)
  • Brian is an Irishman. (Brian is a member of the people known as Irish.)
  • Seiko is a practicing Buddhist. (Seiko is a member of the group of people known as Buddhists.)

Definite Article: the

The definite article is used before singular and plural nouns when the noun is specific or particular. The signals that the noun is definite, that it refers to a particular member of a group. For example:

"The dog that bit me ran away." Here, we're talking about a specific dog, the dog that bit me.

"I was happy to see the policeman who saved my cat!" Here, we're talking about a particular policeman. Even if we don't know the policeman's name, it's still a particular policeman because it is the one who saved the cat.

"I saw the elephant at the zoo." Here, we're talking about a specific noun. Probably there is only one elephant at the zoo.

Count and Noncount Nouns:

The can be used with noncount nouns, or the article can be omitted entirely.

  • "I love to sail over the water" (some specific body of water) or "I love to sail over water" (any water).
  • "He spilled the milk all over the floor" (some specific milk, perhaps the milk you bought earlier that day) or "He spilled milk all over the floor" (any milk).

"A/an" can be used only with count nouns.

  • "I need a bottle of water."
  • "I need a new glass of milk."

Most of the time, you can't say, "She wants a water," unless you're implying, say, a bottle of water.

Geographical use of the:

There are some specific rules for using the with geographical nouns.

It is known that teaching is a very difficult job of great responsibility and most specific character. There is a wide variety of work in teaching. A good teacher is not only a communicator of knowledge but a model of competence. He forms attitudes to his subject and attitudes to learning, becoming himself a symbol of educational process, a person who is teaching as well as learning.

A good teacher always regards capacities his pupils have, trying to temper his teaching methods to children’s abilities and aptitudes.

A good teacher must know the general aims of education, must know his own subject perfectly well, should plan carefully his or her work, assess pupils’ proficiency correctly, work hard to remain up-to-date in his or her subject, use a lot of different materials, equipment and teaching methods, do the best to make his or her lessons interesting, keep in contact with the pupils’ parents, help children to live in the community. School becomes a place of learning and living, of work and play.

That is why a teacher’s work involves many roles besides that of instructing pupils. At times a teacher serves as a parent surrogate, entertainer, psychotherapist and a record keeper.

Teachers who do enjoy their work show this in their classroom activity. They come to class prepared for the day’s lessons and conduct lessons in a way that suggests interest and excitement in learning, create an environment simulating children to develop their abilities.

A teacher is in the classroom to instruct. In order to do it perfectly well teachers must be able to hold the attention and the interest of the audience, to maintain an active but quiet and well-organized atmosphere at the lesson. Instruction also means giving additional help to those who are having difficulty, diagnosing the sources of their problems and giving necessary assistance.

Thus while studying at the University future teachers:

- master their knowledge;

- learn the principles of pedagogy, psychology, physiology;

- study the methods of teaching their subjects;

- make all kinds of experiments;

- develop skills how to use study aids, audiovisual aids and work with computers.

Teachers are good friends of their pupils. They want to see them competent, skilled, honest, kind and well-bred. Teachers help them to organize meetings, to hold pleasure parties, conferences and excursions. They organize hobby groups, sports activity, subject Olympiads (competitions).

Some people say that a good teacher has some of the qualities of a good actor. May be they are right. But a teacher works in quite a different way. His audience takes an active part in his play: they ask and answer questions. A teacher cannot learn his part by heart, but invent it as he goes along. There are many teachers who are fine actors in class, but are unable to take part in a stage-play.

Учитель: преимущества и недостатки профессии / A Teacher: Advantages and Drawbacks of the Profession

They say teaching is a calling. Not every person fit this job and would enjoy it. The same time many teachers love their job and feel satisfaction of the work.

First of all it is a profession for extraverts. A teacher not only tells some facts, he (or she) has to establish a contact with the audience, to get feedback from the pupils. It is a serious emotional strain. But the reward is to see the progress of the students.

Many school teachers consider a long summer vacation a big advantage of their profession. It may last up to 56 days. Tough in reality they may have to spend some time on upgrading the curriculum, preparing presentations and so on.

Some people think that school teachers have shorter working day. But it is not entirely true. After the lessons are over they have to check homework, prepare for the next day and fill in different documents. Besides they need to communicate with pupils’ parents if any questions occur.

While it is a pleasure to teach someone who wants to learn, low motivated students complicate the work significantly. Some children just misbehave in school; others have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or other problems. It might be very exhausting to deal with them.

As for salaries, well, the income is stable, but unfortunately this profession won’t make you rich. Sometimes teachers give private lessons to earn more.

Good teachers not only educate kids, but inspire them, help to develop their talents, learn critical thinking. So this profession is very important for our society. But it is a tough job.
