The city of Ulan-Ude.

Выполнила: Главатских Елена

Few people know the beautiful city of Ulan-Ude, located near Lake Baikal. People living in other places, when they hear the name of this city, think that it is located in Mongolia or somewhere else, but not in Russia. In fact, the city is really different from most Russian ones, it is original and unusual in its culture and inhabitants.

Climate. In Ulan-Ude, the most unpleasant type of climate is sharply continental. In winter it is very, very cold there, the temperature reaches -40 (the younger classes do not go to school at -33, and the older ones – at -38). In summer, the city is always hot, up to +40, but the average temperature is +33 degrees. Rains there, of course, are not uncommon, but they do not come very often, hence the eternal fires in the forests. There is a lot of snow in the city in winter, it is soft and sticky.

Ecology. The air in the city is not a measure of cleanliness, but it is much cleaner there than in many nearby places. There are two thermal power plants operating in Ulan-Ude that pollute the atmosphere, but all this is compensated by nature, forests that surround the city.

National composition and population. About 435 people live in the city, according to registered statistics. However, the number of unregistered is still about 100 thousand. The death rate is not so high, and in recent years it has also decreased. Despite this, many young people continue to die from alcohol poisoning.

Russian Russians live in the city, 30% are Buryats, the remaining 10% are other nationalities (Evenks, Ukrainians, etc.) The second language of the city is Buryat, it is studied in all schools up to the ninth grade, it is mandatory and goes along with English and Russian.

Attractions. The most important attraction of the city is the monument to the leader of the proletariat – the great Lenin. The largest head of this revolutionary in the world is located in the center of the city, it reaches 7 meters in length.

Ethnographic Museum. This museum houses the memory of different cultures: Buryat and Semey, rich and poor. It houses temples and houses decorated by people who used to and now live on these lands. In addition, the museum has a living area where animals from camels to peacocks live.

Monument to Chekhov. It is also located in the center, on the Arbat. Anton Pavlovich is sitting on a bench and pleases tourists and residents of the city.

Ulan-Ude is a beautiful natural and cultural city. The people in it are friendly and mostly well-mannered, and wherever you look, Buddhist patterns or beautiful forests are everywhere.

Ulan-Ude is the capital city of the Republic of Buryatia, Russia; it is located about 100 kilometers southeast of Lake Baikal on the Uda River at its confluence with the Selenga. According to the 2010 Census, 404,426 people lived in Ulan-Ude; up from 359,391 recorded in the 2002 Census, making the city the third largest in eastern Siberia by population.
Ulan-Ude was first called Udinskoye (У́динское) for its location on the Uda River. From around 1735, the settlement was called Udinsk (У́динск) and was granted town status under that name in 1775.

The name was changed to Verkhneudinsk, literally "Upper Udinsk" (Верхнеу́динск), in 1783 to differentiate it from Nizhneudinsk ("Lower Udinsk") lying on a different Uda River near Irkutsk which was granted town status that year. The "upper" and "lower" refer to positions of the two cities relative to each other, not the location of the cities on their respective Uda rivers. Verkhneudinsk lies at the mouth of its Uda, i.e. the lower end, while Nizhneudinsk is along the middle stretch of its Uda.
The current name was given to the city in 1934 and means "red Uda" in Buryat, reflecting the Soviet Union's Communist ideology.
