Соединенные Штаты Америки – четвертая по величине страна в мире с населением порядка 250 миллионов человек. Территория страны покрывает южную часть Северной Америки и простирается от Тихого океана до Атлантического океана. Территория США также включает Аляску, отделенную от России Беринговым проливом и Гавайи, расположенные между штатами западного побережья и Дальним Востоком. Общая территория страны составляет около девяти с половиной миллионов квадратных километров. США граничат с Канадой на севере и с Мексикой на юге. Америка также имеет морскую границу с Россией.
Ландшафт
В Соединенных штатах есть низины и горы, самые высокие из которых Роки-Маунтинс, Кордильеры и Сьерра Невада. Самыми главными реками в Америке являются Миссисипи, которая также является одной из самых длинных рек в мире, Миссури, Рио-Гранде и Колумбия. Однако, они непригодны для навигации. Население

Управление

The fourth largest country
The United States of America is the fourth largest country in the world with the population of about 250 million people. Its territory covers the southern part of North America and extends from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean. It also includes Alaska which is separated from Russia by the Bering Strait and Hawaii situated halfway the west-coast states and the Russian Far East. The total area of the country is about nine and a half million square kilometers. The USA borders on Canada in the north and on Mexico in the south. It also has a sea-border with Russia.
Landscape
There are lowlands and mountains in the US among which the highest ones are the Rocky Mountains, the Cordillera and the Sierra Nevada. America’s most important rivers are the Mississippi which is one of the longest rivers in the world, the Missouri, the Rio Grande and the Columbia. However, they are unsuitable for navigation. The well-known Great Lakes located on the border with Canada are considered to be the deepest in the USA.
Climate
The climate of the country varies a lot. Crossed by mountain ranges from north to south, the country is unprotected from winds either cold or warm. This causes great temperature fluctuations. The climate of Alaska is arctic, that of the central part is continental and the south with its hot winds blowing from the Gulf of Mexico has a subtropical climate.
One of the most developed industrial countries
The USA is one of the most developed industrial countries. It is rich in coal, oil, iron and other minerals which form a solid base for the development of America’s industry. The United States is one of the leading countries in the world economy in such industries as mining, metallurgy, electronics and space engineering, chemicals, textiles, leather and footwear. Regarding agriculture, both animal husbandry and arable farming are prominent in the economy of the US.
Population
Though mainly European and African in origin, there are people of nearly all races and nations in the US.
System
The US is a federal Union of 50 states and a District of Columbia where the capital of the country, Washington, is situated. The US Constitution divides the government into three branches: the executive branch headed by the President, the legislative one exercised by the Congress and the judicial branch. The Congress includes the Senate and the House of Representatives.

The system of education in the United States is rather complicated. It is exposed to the constant changes of federal policies, adaptation to various social needs, and the emergence of new pedagogical methods.
In most schools, it is divided into three levels:
- elementary school – grades 1 to 5,
- middle school — grades 6 to 8,
- high school — grades 9 to 12.
This 12-year system is called “K-12”. K-12 stands for the grades for students of various age groups from the kindergarten age (5 years old) to the 12th grade age (18 years old).
There are three types of schools in the United States: public, private, and home schools. Public schooling is financed by federal, state, and local authorities. Parents do not pay for their children’s education. Private schools have a right to choose their curriculum and establish their policies. This kind of education is not free of charge. Homeschooling addresses the needs of parents who do not want their children to attend regular schools for certain reasons. Among home school students are children with special needs and children whose parents support non-traditional methods of learning. There are also young athletes and celebrities whose tight schedule do not leave them enough time for going to school. About 3% of children are homeschooled in the USA.
The necessary standards of education in the United States are set by state governments. As a rule, the key requirement for American students is to pass obligatory standardized tests developed for the K-12 schooling system.
After high school, children have several options. First, they can choose a 4-year college or university program and get the education for the selected professional career. Second, children can choose a 2-year program in college and get prepared for their future career choice. Third, high school graduates can enter a vocational school and learn a trade to have an opportunity to be employed in a specific field of occupation such as design, baking or carpentry. Fourth, graduates of high schools can choose to serve in the US armed forces.

Before we take a look at some of the differences between the two main types of English I’d like to stress that these differences are somehwat minor and with the ongoing internationalization of our modern world they could even said to be diminishing.
The few differences that exist between British and American English tend rather to enrich communication than slow it down.
Although not all my British readers might agree, I think that the American version of spoken English is becoming more and more dominant for several reasons. Let me give you an example to show you why American English has a stronger impact on British English than vice versa.
When you go to the UK and switch on the TV you will see a lot of American shows, movies and films which, of course, are shown in the original, American version. Thus, especially young people watching TV will learn a lot of American vocabulary and phrases which they easily internalize and use as their own. It follows, modern British English is much more likely to be influenced by American English than the other way round because when you live in the US and watch TV you rarely will see a British show or film.
Another area where US English dominates is international business. Most globally operating companies are based in the US and hence the influence of American English terminology is very strong.
However, as with any issue, the more you think about it, the more variations you will encounter and it would be impossible to cover them all in one article.
That’s why we’ll move on now to the differences between British and American English. Instead of giving you a comprehensive rundown of all imaginable items I’ll limit myself to a small selection of my personal observations.
When it comes to different spellings there isn’t really that much to say because in the near future the world will more or less agree on one uniform version.
British English has a tendency to keep the spelling of many words of French origin whereas Americans try to spell more closely to the way they pronounce words and they remove letters not needed, which makes sense to me. Here are some examples:

Again, these are in my opinion examples for the most important spelling differences between British and American English. Of course, there are more of them and the purpose of this article is not to elaborate on orthography but to raise your awareness of the subject so you can make your own observations and draw conclusions.
