Last month my mother had her birthday. My father decided to throw a surprise party for her. Two weeks, before the event he booked a room in my mother's favourite cafe. And then my father began to invite our relatives and friends.
Of course, that was a great secret. It was sometimes difficult to keep mother from suspecting anything. It was also difficult to make some people understand that it was to be a surprise. For example, the only time he could ring mother's parents was when she happened to be in the house. However, she didn't suspect anything and her parents didn't said a word about the invitation.
Two weeks such secret planning was more than father could stand. He was glad when that day arrived but nervous in case something went wrong. He had told mother that they would just go shopping.
She agreed as she didn't often make a big fuss of her birthday. My father had bought her a beautiful dress and she wore it when they went out. They wandered along the river and then around the shops. It was a lovely day and many people were out. Father was very nervous, because if mother guesses his surprise will be ruined.
Eventually it was time for my father to suggest having a meal at their favourite cafe. It would be his treat as a kind of birthday present. Mother readily agreed. Great was my mother's surprise when she saw her sister-in-law's car parked outside the cafe and greater when in the foyer she saw ray brother and me, though we had to be at the university.
What a crowd of people she found inside ready to wish her a happy birthday. My mother was very happy!

Велико было мамино удивление, когда она увидела машину невестки, припаркованную у кафе, и еще больше, когда увидела в фойе нас с братом, ведь мы должны были быть в университете.
Внутри она увидела много людей, которые пришли поздравить ее с днем рождения. Мама была очень счастлива!

First of all, we decided to treat my mom to a day at the spa with her best girlfriends. I got some of her best friends to accompany her at the spa on her birthday for a spa birthday party of sorts.
Surprise party
For a home surprise party we made sure everyone arrived at least an hour ahead of schedule for decorations and all the stuff. We made sure all cars were parked away from the home. We even called ahead with a pre-defined ring (twice, and then twice again). We turned off all the lights and hid all the shoes. Ahead of time we had everyone submit to us their favorite memory of my mom – a funny story or just a happy birthday message. I put all those together in an album. The Memory Book was on display and was one of her birthday gifts. We went so far as making a few fake invitations for the party so she would think it was legit. I had the friends give out the fake invites. I had the man and his entire family in on my white lie. She took the bait. It was hilarious to see the look on her face when she walked in everyone yelled “Surprise!” and there before her was the man she thought she was attending a party for. We prepared all kinds of food and drinks my mom loves. Once most people had their food I had my dad and my sisters say something about her. It was really neat and of course she cried.
