Children always wait for Father Frost to come and give them a present. Many people think New Year’s day to be a family holiday.

P3 The 8th of March is a happy and nice holiday. Each family celebrates this spring holiday. In the morning, men go to the shops to buy some flowers. They try to clean flats and to cook a holiday dinner. Sons help their fathers too: they make a cake, lay the table and wash dishes after holiday dinner.

P4 Easter is one of the most important Christian holidays. In our country the Sunday before Easter is called a Willow Sunday. On this day people bring home some willow branches which have been blessed in church. On Saturday children dye Easter eggs. In the evening people go to church for the Easter mass, which lasts all night. Sunday is the actual day of Easter. People visit each other on this day and exchange colourful eggs.

II. April 1st is April Fool’s Day. People play tricks on their friends on this day. Even the news-papers and television have their April Fool’s joke. But in Britain you must not play tricks on people after 12 o’clock.

III. At Easter children in Britain get chocolate Easter eggs as presents from their parents and relatives. Sometimes cards are sent, but other presents are not usually given.

V. November 5th is Guy Fawkes Night. All over the country, people build bonfires and burn a figure |’fige| of Guy Fawkes. About a week before Bonfire Night, children make their guy from old clothes and newspapers. Then they carry their guy through the town and ask people for a “penny for the guy”. They collect the money for fireworks. Fireworks are an important part of Guy Fawkes Night.

VI. Christmas time starts early in Britain. In the weeks before Christmas, people send cards to everybody they know, and when they receive cards, they hang them on the walls. Christmas dinner with turkey and plum pudding ( рождественский пудинг со сливами ) is the main meal of the holiday.

State or public holidays in Belarus include New Year's Day, the International Women's Day, May Day, Victory Day and so on. During these holidays, people do not work. They spend time with their families and friends or go to the center of big cities to celebrate there. Banks, companies and some shops do not work on these days either.

New Year's Day is the major holiday in Belarus. We put up a New Year tree and decorate it with colorful toys and glass balls. Small fir trees are put up in shop windows, in streets and squares, even on roofs of buildings. Children like the holiday a lot. They can stay up late and then get their presents.

The progress in the field of transport.

Speaking aboutthe progress in the field of transport. I'd like to mention solar cars

A solar vehicle is an electric vehicle powered by a type of renewable energyby solar energy obtained fromsolar panels on the surface (generally, the roof) of the “vehicle”.

A solar vehicle is an electric vehicle powered by a type of renewable energy by solar, energy obtained from solar panels on the surface (generally, the roof) of the vehicle. Photo voltaic (PV) cells convert the Sun's energy directly" into electrical energy. Solar vehicles are hot practical day-to-day-transportation devices at present.

Like many race cars, the driver's cockpit usually only contains room for one person.

A solar bicycle has the, advantage of very low weight and can use the riders foot power to supplement the power generated by the solar panel roof vehicle can be driven without the use of any fossil fuels.

The first solar “cars” were actually tricycles built with bicycle technology.

Today highly developed electric bicycles are available and these use little power.

The same system also works for electric motorcycles, solar ships and solar airplanes.

One-practical application for solar powered vehicles is possibly golf carts.

An interesting variant of the electric vehicle is the triple hybrid vehicle that has solar panels as well to assist.

This type of vehicles no doubt is environment friendly and will find more and more sheers of practical application.

Customs and traditions of Belarus

  1. Now let’s talk about customs and traditions. What can you tell me about your favourite holiday in Belarus?

Belarus has deep historical roots in the past that’s why its customs and traditions often have a fascinating history. The most ancient Belarusian traditions and holidays can be classified according to 4 seasons of the year: spring, summer, autumn and winter.

My favourite holidays are Christmas and New Year in winter. My favourite New Year tradition has been receiving and giving presents since my childhood when gifts were put under the Christmas-tree for me and I believed it was Father Frost who brought them while I was sleeping. To my mind, giving gifts to all the members of the family adds to love and affection in it and helps to forget minor quarrels and misunderstandings. Secondly, it creates the atmosphere of joy and magic.

The Belarusian people have always remembered and tried to celebrate their national holidays, customs and traditions.

  1. Would you like to take part in a British holiday celebration? Why?

Every country has its customs and traditions. I like to learn something new about other countries. I would like to take part in a British holiday “Halloween”. To my mind it’s funny to dress up in costumes and go from door to door where you knock on the door and yell “Trick or treat!” And it’s more pleasant to eat all the sweets you were given.

  1. What questions can you ask a British teenager about his/her best school celebration?
  1. What is your best school celebration?
  2. What was the most exciting moment?
  3. Do you celebrate it annually?
  4. Were there a lot of guests?
  5. Do you like this holiday?
  1. What good manners will you recommend a British tourist to follow in Belarus?

There are some rules foreign people should follow visiting Belarus. The first rule to remember is that our country has right hand traffic (you should drive on the right), you should be polite and don’t throw the rubbish everywhere. There are special places for smoking in our country. Belarusians are proud of their nature and take care about it. And of course, you should obey government’s laws not to have problems with the police.

  1. Do you think it is easy to organize a good party? What mistakes do people sometimes make?

I think that to organize a good party is not so easy, because you need to consider all the details and be sure to make a list of guests, food and drinks, contests and so on. So you should check whether you have enough dishes, forks, cups and plates. Sometimes people forget about it and it is the main mistake. And sometimes it is difficult to make all the guests glad and relaxed.

The New Year Dayis one of them. It is a popular holiday which is widely celebrated in every family. Long before the New Year Eve people begin to buy New Year cards, toys and presents. Most families see the New Year in at home. There is usually a fur tree decorated with toys and lights. A lot of delicious food is cooked for the night meal. A goose stuffed with apples is a traditional New Year dish

The 8 th of Marchis another national holiday when people show their love and respect for their mothers, grandmothers, sisters and girl-friends. It is a tradition to present them with flowers and gifts.

There are two national holidays in May. The 1 st of May is the holiday of labor and spring. It’s a merry holiday. There is a lot of music and dancing everywhere.

Then comes the Victory Dayon the 9 th of May. The day marks the victory of the Soviet people over the German fascism in the Great Patriotic War. People congratulate war veterans and express their gratitude to them and also remember those who gave their lives for the independence of our Motherland. They put flowers to the monuments of war heroes.

In Belarus people widely celebrate such popular Christian holidays as Christmas and Easter On Christmas Eve traditional food is cooked. It should include fish, mushrooms pancakes and Belarussian pudding made of barley. Traditionally dinner table should be covered with hay and then with a table cloth and the food. Christmas week is great fun. Young people go from home to home dressed like animals or other fairy characters, sing Kolyady songs and dance .In return they are given food and sometimes money.

Kupalleis the most loved and celebrated pagan holidays in today’s Belarus. There is a whole complex of traditional rituals, beliefs, love and magic. It is celebrated in the night from 6 July to 7 July. The central part in Kupalle celebration is a fire. The oiled wooden wheel is set on the fire to symbolize sun. There are a lot of purification rituals such as jumping over the fire and bathing in the river. There is also a lot of dancing in karagods, competing in strength and fortune-telling. Young people usually wear wreaths made of corn flowers , ferns and camomiles on their heads. They jump over the fire and go to the forest to look for a blossoming fern flower-“paparats-kvetka”. According to the legend those who find this mysterious flower will live happily ever after.
