Every citizen in our society has the right to freedom and to be happy. In order to preserve that right to be happy, you must be a virtuous citizen and fulfill and promote civic rights.
Here are three tips to follow on being a good citizen. First it is essential to obey all the laws of the land. Secondly you should not let your rights interfere or trample the rights of others, and lastly, you should be very community minded in spirit. “We hold that law and order can be restored without turning this country of the free into a Police State.” (Etzioni, 1993) First for law and order to be restored in our country it takes all of its citizen’s obeying the laws. Those rights don’t just merely require us to follow the rules, but to teach everyone especially our children what those laws are. In today’s society it seems as if people have forgotten what laws are let alone obey them. It is said that 60% of people obey the laws most of the time. (Williams, 2000) With that kind of percentage we as a society have a lot of work to do to make good citizens. We have thousands of laws on the books and new ones being written everyday, but without enforcement from the court system, overcrowding of our jails and not enough reinforcement from parents to children it will never be solved. Unless we as citizens take control of the situation, when our children are grown they will be afraid to go outside of their homes
Lastly, as a good citizen we ought to have good community service or spirit. What is community spirit? Is it getting involved in the political arena? Which doesn’t mean necessarily running for office but taking advantage of our right to vote. Today we as a society have about half of the registered voters that actually go to the polls and vote. That’s not good community spirit. Secondly, are we helping by policing our own communities, no, only one in four neighborhoods has a neighborhood watch program. What do we not care what happens in our neighborhoods anymore? Good citizens should just be involved in anything that is going to have a positive outcome for his or her community.
In conclusion to enjoy freedom and be happy as a citizen, we must all obey laws, enjoy our God given rights without infringing on the rights of others, and commit ourselves to our communities. Citizenship starts at home with each individual creating his or her own identity and by starting with children at a young age you are teaching them right from wrong. Therefore “parents have a moral responsibility to the community to invest themselves in the proper upbringing of their children, and communities— to enable parents to so dedicate themselves.” (Etzioni,1993). By following the rules of society, not trampling the rights of others and giving back to our communities, we can evolve into a society of good and productive citizens.

Тема эссе: “How can we be better global citizens?”
It is clear, we, people from all over the world, live in one global village eating the same food, listening to similar music, sharing common interests. In other words, we exist together in a big society so it is extremely important to be a global citizen nowadays. That is why there is no need to say that the topic of globalization seems to be one of the most discussed in our modern life.
How can I explain the meaning of the term “global citizen”? In my view, a real global citizen is a responsive person who does not only respect deeply any customs and traditions of other nations but also cares about what happens to people in less fortunate countries, takes part in some volunteer projects to help poor and starving people.
It is well-known that the way we live today has a negative influence on the ecology in a considerable extent. And, unfortunately, globalization process partly makes matters worse. I mean, a great number of huge international manufactures has been created around the globe over the past few years. No doubt, all kinds of industrial products made by these corporations are necessary for us to survive. For instance, no one can imagine his life without food in a convenient package as well as some hygienic things like napkins or baby diapers. However, manufacturers and also, each of us should be attentive to the problems of polluting the environment if we want to be called global citizens.
Despite some harmful impact that globalization may have on ecology, there are a lot of positive points. For example, young enthusiastic people from different countries unite to “green” organizations to save extinct plants and animals and to monitor dangerous manufactures’ activity (WWF, Greenpeace).
In conclusion, to live in a global society having nice relationships, balanced environment and various goods in abundance is not an utopia. If everyone were respectful to others and careful for nature, we all could become true global citizens. And our government just should help us by passing special laws and encouraging positive acts.

Он имеет право и обязанность защищать её, и подчиняться её законам и правилам. Другими словами, гражданство – это отношение между человеком и государством, в силу которого человек является частью, и должен проявлять преданность государству, и, в свою очередь, имеет право на защиту со стороны государства.
Простые поступки, которые нужно совершать в вашей повседневной жизни
Все члены нашего общества – от самого молодого до самого старого – должны сотрудничать. Под сотрудничеством я не подразумеваю отдачу огромных усилий. Простые поступки и нетрудное поведение могут помочь нам улучшить наш образ жизни. Как граждане и, особенно, студенты, всё, что мы должны делать, это шаги, изложенные ниже.
- Начните со своего собственного дома; чистите его регулярно и заботьтесь о площадке перед вашей передней дверью.
- Быть хорошим соседом, заботясь о других.
- Не используйте слишком много воды и электричества.
- Уважайте ваших соседей, помогайте им, если необходимо, и поступайте вежливо.
- Не мусорьте и не бросайте мусор на улице.
- Не плюйте на улице – это не только беспокоит других прохожих, но это также очень далеко от цивилизованного поведения.
- Старайтесь переходить улицу по переходу. Город будет выглядеть организованным, и это снижает уровень происшествий.
- Давайте стараться ходить по боковой дорожке или тротуару, так как это причиняет меньше затруднений водителям в городе.
- Уважайте вашу школу, особенно её двери, стены и окна. Они не ваши, вы только позаимствовали их на год или больше.
- Быть гражданином – это источник гордости. Не старайтесь игнорировать ваше происхождение перед иностранцами. Вы когда-нибудь видели, чтобы кто-то из них отрицал – кем она/он являются в действительности?
- Поступайте любезно по отношению к туристам. Если мы хотим, чтобы наша страна получила миллионы туристов, старайтесь быть любезными.
- Если вы можете изучать свою страну, это было бы прекрасно. Посмотрите на крайнее разнообразие, которое у вас есть (пустыня, море, горы, разные диалекты, традиции, традиционные одежды).
- Если вы не участвуете в голосовании, то кто будет это делать? Простое действие может поставить правильного (подходящего) человека на правильное (нужное) место.
- В чрезвычайных обстоятельствах – не пугайтесь. Помогите людям, которые нуждаются в этом. (Сдача донорской крови, звонок в полицию, в скорую помощь, и помогите женщине на улице …). Представьте себя на их месте, разве вы не хотели бы, чтобы другие люди поддержали вас?
Когда вы станете родителем, научите этому своих детей. Гражданство начинается с детства, и заканчивается только с вашей смертью. Нужно только применять на практике эти действительно простые поступки, чтобы наша повседневная жизнь могла стать лучше. Я надеюсь, что это поможет нам понять другое значение хорошего гражданства.

How to be a good citizen?
Definition of citizenship
Citizenship is a sacred honor, a plaque we carry proudly on our chests and a burden pressing hard on our backs. A citizen is a member of a country. He has the right and the duty to protect it and obey its laws and rules. In other words, citizenship is the relationship between an individual and a state in which the individual belongs, and owes allegiance to the state and in turn is entitled to its protection.
Fortunately, being a good citizen doesn’t stop at the exchange of rights and duties, it requires a lot of civilized behavior, and responsible acts.
Simple acts to do in your daily life
All the members of our community, from the youngest to the eldest, have to cooperate. By cooperating, I don’t mean giving huge efforts. Simple acts and easy behavior can help us ameliorate our level of life. As citizens, and students in particular, all we have to do are the steps below:
- Start with your own home, clean it regularly, and take care of your front door area.
- Being a good neighbor by caring about others.
- Don’t overuse water and electricity.
- Respect your neighbors, help them if necessary, and act politely.
- Don’t litter, or throw trash in the street.
- Don’t spit in the street, it doesn’t only bother the other passers-by, but it’s also very far from being civilized.
- Try to cross the street in the crossing passage. The town will look organized, and it lowers the level of accidents.
- Let’s try to walk in the sidewalk, or the pavement, because it causes fewer difficulties to drivers in the city.
- Respect your school, especially its doors, walls and windows. They are not yours; you only borrow them for a year or more.
- Being a citizen is a source of pride. Don’t try to ignore your origins in front of foreigners. Have you ever seen any of them deny being who s/he really is?
- Act nicely with tourists. If we want our country to receive millions of tourists, try to be nice.
- If you can study about your country, it would be great. See the extreme diversity you have (the desert, the sea, the mountains, the different dialects, the traditions, the traditional clothes).
- If you don’t vote, who will? A simple act can place the right person in the right place.
- In emergencies, don’t be afraid. Help the people in need. (Blood donations, call the police, the ambulance, and help a lady in the street…) Imagine you were in their place; wouldn’t you like to have other people standing by your side?
When you become a parent, teach this to your children. Citizenship starts from childhood, and only ends by the time you die. It’s only by practicing those really simple acts that our daily life can get better. I hope this will help us understand another meaning of good citizenship.

We all live and work in a community and there are rules and laws that help the community. When someone doesn’t follow those rules and laws, it makes life unpleasant for some people. We must behave towards other people as though they were members of our family. Doing something good for others is doing something good for ourselves.

We can’t have great communities without great citizens! To be a good citizen, you must respect and help others, obey rules and laws, and be involved in your community. So, is your community better because of you or worse?
