Some people think that having pocket money teaches teenagers to be more responsible with it, whereas others believe it is a bad idea to trust money to them.

I think that parents should give their teenage children pocket money; a certain amount every month and not a penny more. First of all , this would give their kids some freedom and independence . Secondly , it will teach them to be responsible with money and plan their budget.

At the same time , there are people who think that teenagers are too young to have their own money. They would just squander it and come back in a couple of days asking for more. They would not learn responsibility and would only become spoiled.

Actually, I cannot agree with the opinion mentioned above for a particular reason. I think that if their parents stay firm in their intentions to not give their children more than a certain amount every month, the children will eventually learn to be responsible. Sure , some of them may spend all their money in one day, but after that they will have to go through the rest of the month without money and learn their lesson.

In conclusion , I would like to say that there are opposing views on this issue. It might seem that pocket money can spoil young people, but in actual fact, this helps them mature and it is especially important for the young generation . Thus , I strongly believe that parents should always give their children a chance to learn to be serious and responsible regarding spending money.

Charity

Sometimes different difficulties happen. Often people have no opportunity to solve these problems by themselves. In this case they can apply to charitable organisations for a help. Such organisations are aimed to help people who need such help.

Why do people work for charitable causes? The main reason why people do it is just the readiness to do good and to help other people. Many people understand how important to be the part of the society and the world we live in. They understand that what they do can be the great help for somebody.

Charity can have different forms. It can be long-term when it does not depend on particular events or situations, for example, the work of different charitable funds aimed to help people who have some diseases or help students who need to go to some country to gain experience at particular university of that country. Some charitable organisations are established for a short term, for example, to help people who have sufferred from some natural disaster. Charitable organisations can be established by the government, local authorities or even a particular person.

What can be done for charitable causes? Of course, people can donate something to charity. Money is one of the most common donation. It is also possible to donate clothes, food and different things. One more way to work for charitable causes is to improve environmental conditions or to transfer the knowledge.

The problem of homeless people exists all over the world. Such people are often dirty and smell bad. That’s why first thing you feel when you meet them is disgust. But do they really deserve disgust or sympathy and help?

Some people lose their home due to accidents such as fire, hurricane or flood. Others become a victim of fraud. Some people leave their home looking for a job in a big city, fail and have no money even to come back.

Also it happens that a person technically has a home, but doesn’t want to come back there fearing bad attitude and aggression from his or her relatives.

And it might be not so easy for homeless people to come back to normal life, especially if they lost their documents. One need money even to rent a room. And no one wants to hire a homeless person.

In these cases it seems appropriate to support them and give a chance to earn money and improve their life.

But it doesn’t mean that you should give money to every beggar. Because not all of the homeless people really want to change their life. It is quite common, that the money they managed to get, are spent on alcohol.

That is why I believe that if you want to help such people you better donate some charity organization, which works on this problem, than give money people on the street.

Of course we should give homeless people a chance to start a normal life, but the same time capable people shouldn’t live the whole life at our expense.

Today, many rich and famous people give money to charity. Technology billionaire Bill Gates recently gave $31 billion to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Other technology leaders also give away money. Pierre Omidyar, the founder of eBay, and Jeff Skoll, eBay’s first CEO, want to use their billions to help 'make the world a better place'.

Why do charities receive so much money? One reason is that there are more rich people than in the past. The world now has 691 billionaires, compared with 423 in 1996. Rich people in many different countries give millions of euros, riyals, yen and other currencies to charity.

What can the world of charity learn from the world of business? Michael Porter, a management guru at the Harvard Business School, believes that the rich need to think about how their charitable foundations spend money. In the USA, it is traditional for the rich to give money to hospitals, libraries and universities. These are very important, but some people think that this does not always help the very poor.

People with a lot of money often have useful social connections. They usually know how to market ideas and how to interest the media in a subject. So, some people think that the rich can give more than money. They can also use their time, social connections and skills to help find solutions to some of the world's problems, such as poverty and the environment.

Money makes people worry

A new study from the BBC shows that looking after money isn’t easy. Over 109,000 people took part in the BBC’s Big Money Test. It was one of the biggest ever studies on the psychology of money.

One of the biggest findings is that money makes many people feel bad. Researchers say over 40 per cent of us always worry about spending money; a third of us constantly worry about money; and the same percentage feel guilty when spending money on themselves. The study found that women like to go shopping to make themselves feel better about life, while men are more likely to save their cash. Women are more generous with their money and are also more likely to suffer from money problems.

The researchers also looked at ways shops try and make us spend our money. It showed how stores are continually looking at new ways to make us buy things on impulse. It asks why candies and chocolate are always by the checkout in supermarkets; why “everyday essentials like bread and milk are at the back of shop so you have to walk through as many aisles as possible to reach them;” and why the perfume and jewellery sections are always at the front of a department store. The test says that buying things on impulse can be bad for our finances. People who bought goods impulsively were three times more likely to go bankrupt, and four times more likely to run out of money by the end of the week.

Task 4 Reading

Most teens hang out with their friends or watch TV or surf the net after school, but 15 year old Richard Evans is different. He helps out at the local animal shelter.

Read the text again and match the headings to the paragraphs. There is one you do not need to use (Ex3 p91).

All Shapes and Sizes

“ I started working at the animal shelter after school a year ago. Some people came to my school to give a talk about ways teens can help out in the community. I liked the idea of getting involved with something worthwhile, and as I’ve always loved animals the shelter seemed the natural choice for me.

Basically, I help out for a couple of hours about twice a week, more in the holidays. Sometimes I help the staff members feed and clean and exercise the animals. Other times, I answer phone calls or help members of the public to choose a pet. Last year during the summer holiday, I also spoke to some groups of children about looking after pets properly and the importance of showing kindness to animals. I especially enjoyed that!

When most people think about animal shelters, they think of cats and dogs. Well, there are plenty of both at our shelter, but there are sometimes farm animals there, too, such as, horses, sheep, goats, chickens, ducks and once, even a llama who we named Jack! Most of the animals are either brought to the shelter by their owners because they can no longer take care of them, or they are removed from their homes because they are not being looked after properly. Once I went with a member of staff to rescue a pony from a farm where it had been extremely neglected. I found it hard not to burst into tears when I first saw a pony, but I was pleased to report that he made a full recovery at the shelter.

Some of the animals need more care than usual, so a foster home is found for them. I have taken home two little kittens before, as well as injured guinea pig and a puppy that had been found abandoned in a rubbish bin. Sometimes my mum jokes that our house is more like a zoo than a home!

Summer is the busiest time for shelters, with many people simply abandoning their pets when they go on holiday. So why not ask to volunteer at your local shelter this summer? Or you could do something else, such as going to a charity event, or volunteer to visit senior citizen for a few hours a week. I’ve learnt a lot about myself and others through volunteering and I’ve met a lot of interesting people, too!”
