On July 4 the Americans celebrate their national holiday — Independence Day. The United States gained independence as a result of gradual and painful process.
By the mid 1700's, it became difficult for thirteen British colonies in the New World to be ruled by a king 3000 miles across the ocean. The British empire imposed high taxes upon the colonies.
In 1774, the First Continental Congress drew up a list of grievances against the British crown. This document was the first draft of the document that would formally separate colonies from England.
In 1775, the Revolutionary War began. On July 2, 1776, the Second Continental Congress presented a second draft of the list of grievances. On July 4, the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of independence. But the War of independence lasted until 1783. After the war Independence Day became an official holiday.
On July 4, Americans have holiday from work. People have day-long picnics with favourite foods like hot dogs, ham-burgers, potato salad, baked beans. Lively music is heard everywhere. People play baseball or compete at three-legged races or pie - eating or water-melon-eating contests.
Some cities have parades with people dressed as the original founding fathers who march to the music of high school bands. In the evening people gather to watch firework displays.
Wherever Americans are around the globe they will get together to celebrate Independence Day.

July 4th or Independence Day, is the most important American holiday. It is the birthday of the United States of America. On this day, in 1776, America signed the Declaration of Independence and started to fight for freedom from British rule.
Before 1776, the King of England, George III, ruled the thirteen colonies in America. The colonists were tired of the taxes that George III imposed on them.
In 1767 the British government placed new taxes on tea and paper that the colonists imported from abroad. The colonists got angry and refused to play. George III sent soldiers to keep order.
But the War of Independence dragged on until 1783 when the colonists finally won . The head of the Revolutionary army was George Washington, who later became the first President of the United States of America. In 1783 Independence Day was made an official holiday.
Today, the country's birthday is widely celebrated with parades, public meetings, patriotic music and speech - making. There are and picnics barbecues, and in the evening there are big fireworks show. Wherever Americans are around the globe, they will get together for a traditional 4Ul of July celebration!

4 июля, или День независимости - важный праздник в Америке. Это день рождения Соединенных Штатов Америки. В этот день в 1776 г. Америка подписала Декларацию о независимости и начала борьбу за свободу от британского управления.
К 1776 г. король Англии Георг III руководил тринадцатью колониями в Америке. Колонисты устали от налогов, которые Георг III на них накладывал.
В 1767 г. британское правительство установило новые налоги на чай и бумагу, которые колонисты импортировали из других стран. Колонисты осерчали и отказались платить. Георг III послал солдат навести порядок.
Но война за независимость продолжалась до 1783 г., пока в конце концов колонисты не победили. Революционную армию возглавлял Джордж Вашингтон, который позже стал первым президентом США. В 1783 г. День независимости стал официальным праздником.

- Labor Day (the 1st Monday of September) pays tribute to all workers and their activities.
- Inauguration Day is observed once in four years after the new election of the President.
Some holidays are celebrated, but usually people still work on those days.
- Valentine’s Day (February 14) is a holiday of those who are in love.
- Easter (the date is determined each year) is a day commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Traditional Easter gifts are Easter eggs of different colors which symbolize new life.
- Halloween (October 31) is a unique day when people, especially kids, dress up as ghosts and witches. Children are “trick-or-treating”, which means they are asking grown-ups for candies, and they happily treat them. A pumpkin lantern is a famous symbol of Halloween.
