Каждая из этих достопримечательностей является уникальной и значимой. Например, все знают, что Биг-Бен – это крупнейшие в мире часы. Несмотря на то, что Биг Бен это просто название большого колокола дворцовых часов, сегодня это один из самых известных символов Великобритании. Лондонский Тауэр считается самой посещаемой достопримечательностью в стране. Это исторический замок на северном берегу реки Темза, который является Королевским дворцом и крепостью одновременно. Посетители могут увидеть там Королевские регалии и знаменитых воронов. Официальная резиденция британского монарха, расположенная в центральном районе Лондона, также часто посещаема. Great Britain is the largest island in Europe. Being the part of the sovereign state of the United Kingdom, it is situated on the British Isles in the Atlantic Ocean. It includes the territory of England, Scotland, Wales and is surrounded by over 1,000 small islets. Ireland lies at its west. Every year over 20 million people visit Great Britain. It is considered to be the world’s 8th biggest tourist destination. Not only people from neighboring France or Belgium come to see the sights of the country, but also from such distant countries as Australia and the USA. London is considered to be the principal tourist destination as the country’s most popular attractions are situated there. They include the Tower of London, Big Ben, the Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, the Museum of Madame Tussaud, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Hyde Park and many other prominent places.
Each of these attractions is unique and meaningful. For example, everybody knows that Big Ben is the largest four-faced chiming clock in the world. Although Big Ben is simply the nickname for the great bell of the palace clock, it has now become one of the most prominent symbols of the UK. The Tower of London is known as the most visited attraction in the country. It is a historic castle on the north bank of the River Thames, which is a Royal Palace and a fortress at the same time. Visitors can see the Crown Jewels and famous ravens there. The official residence of the British monarch in the central area of London is also frequently visited. It is originally known as Buckingham Palace. The palace has 775 rooms and is especially attractive for its Changing of the Guard ceremony, which takes place at 11.30am each day. A giant ferris wheel on the south bank of the River Thames, called the London Eye, is another structure that attracts foreign visitors. It consists of 32 capsules which can hold up to 25 people each. On a clear day the passengers can see up 25 miles from the top.
Apart from London, Great Britain has loads of beauty spots to offer, including the White Cliffs of Dover in Kent, Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands, Edinburgh Castle on Castle Rock, Stonehenge in Wiltshire, the Roman Baths in Bath, Sherwood Forest and many other remarkable places. One of the most iconic sightseeing symbols of Britain is a prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, known as Stonehenge. It represents remains of a ring of standing stones set within earthworks. It is believed to be 5,000 years old and listed as a World Heritage Site. Summer solstice is celebrated by many Druids there. Another intriguing place is Loch Ness. It’s a deep, freshwater lake in the Scottish Highlands known for alleged sightings of the Loch Ness Monster.
Visitors of Great Britain can bathe in the natural thermae discovered over 2,000 years ago and known as the Roman Baths. It’s a well-preserved historical complex built by the Romans for public bathing. The site is situated in a beautiful city of Bath. Everybody knows the legend of Robin Hood and the Major Oak. That’s why each year more than 500,000 tourists visit Sherwood Forest. Built on a 700 million-year-old extinct volcano, Edinburgh Castle is a historic fortress, which has been used as a Royal residence through centuries. The rock on which the castle stands has a symbolic name – Castle Rock. White Cliffs of Dover can be referred to outstanding British landmarks as well. They frame the English coastline facing the Strait of Dover and France. These cliffs form a symbolic guard against numerous invasions.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (the UK) occupies most of the territory of the British Isles. It consists of four main parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. London is the capital of England, Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, Cardiff - of Wales and Belfast - of Northern Ireland. The UK is a small country with an area of some 244,100 square kilometres. It occupies only 0.2 per cent of the world's land surface. It is washed by the Atlantic Ocean in the north-west, north and south-west and separated from Europe by the North Sea in the east and by the English Channel in the south. The Strait of Dover or Pas de Calais is the narrowest part of the Channel. The North Sea and the English Channel are often called "the narrow seas"; they are not deep but are frequently rough.
In the west the Irish Sea and the North Channel separate the UK from Ireland. The seas around Britain provide exceptionally good fishing grounds. The country has many bays favourable for shipping. In their shelter are Britain's main ports such as London, Liverpool, Glasgow, Hull and others.
One will not find very high mountains or large plains in Great Britain. Everything occupies very little place. Nature, it seems, has carefully adapted things to the size of the island itself. The highest mountain is Ben Nevis in Scotland, 4,406 feet high. The longest river is the Severn in England.
The population of the United Kingdom is over 63.1 million people. Foreigners often call British people "English", but the Scots, the Irish and the Welsh do not consider themselves to be English. The English are Anglo-Saxon in origin, but the Welsh, the Scots and the Irish are Celts, descendants of the ancient people, who crossed over from Europe centuries before the Norman Invasion. It was this people, whom the Germanic Angles and Saxons conquered in the 5th and 6th centuries AD. These Germanic conquerors gave England its name - "Angle" land. They were conquered in their turn by the Norman French, when William the Conqueror of Normandy landed near Hastings in 1066. It was from the union of Norman conquerors and the defeated Anglo-Saxons that the English people and the English language were born.
The official language of the United Kingdom is English. But in western Scotland some people still speak Gaelic and in northern and central parts of Wales people often speak Welsh.
The UK is a constitutional monarchy. In law, Head of the State is Queen. In practice, the country is ruled by the elected government with the Prime Minister at the head. The British Parliament consists of two chambers: the House of Lords and the House of Commons.
There are three main political parties in Great Britain: the Labour, the Conservative and the Liberal parties.
The flag of the United Kingdom, known as the Union Jack, is made up of three crosses. The big red cross is the cross of Saint George, the patron saint of England. The white cross is the cross of Saint Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland. The red diagonal cross is the cross of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.

The United Kingdom
The United Kingdom is an advanced European island country. It is surrounded by three bodies of water: the North Sea, in the eastern part, the English Channel in the southern part, and the Atlantic Ocean in the west. The country consists of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The term “United Kingdom” is often confused with the term “Great Britain”, which is the name of the island, but not the state. Many smaller islands and adjacent territories form an integral part of this country, as well as the area of Northern Ireland in the northwest. The total area of the country is 242,500 sq. km. The population is over 67 million people, according to the 2020 statistical data.
The British landscape is diverse. It includes flat countryside, low hills, and a long line of high mountains. In this unique island country, the climate is rather mild and a bit humid. This geographical region is known for its warm weather in winter, and cool weather in summer, combined with intense rainfall and baffling winds over the year.
There are numerous rivers and lakes in the UK. The water resources of great importance are the largest river the Thames, the longest one called the Severn, and many smaller rivers like the Mersey, the Clyde, and the Tyne. These natural resources play a critical role in the water supply of the nation. Unfortunately, the UK has already been affected by the ongoing climate change. The nation experiences increased rainfall, storms, and heatwaves.
London, the official capital city and influential administrative center, is one of the most densely populated megalopolises in the world. Its population is over 9.2 million people. The major cities are Manchester, famous for its industrial heritage, Birmingham, Leeds, and Glasgow.
They are recognized as significant cultural, commercial, and industrial centers that contribute to the nation’s economic growth and sustainable social development. Many highly acclaimed universities and colleges can be found in the UK.
The UK has mixed economy that allows the nation to succeed both in international trade, the manufacturing industry, agriculture, and the services sector. Tourism is the number one national industry that keeps the UK economy flourishing. There are many places of huge interest in this popular destination that attract visitors from all over the world. Among them are the majestic Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, and the British Museum in London.
