The main element of men's traditional costume Armenian — shirt with a low collar and wide trousers, strapped at the bottom of winding wide.
Eastern Armenians over the shirt wore arhaluk — wing short coat, which were girdled by a wide sash. Wealthy people wore patterned belt made of solid silver links. The Western Armenians instead of arhiloha were distributed over short and open vests and jackets.
The upper robes have been various types of caftans, definitely fitted and flared from the waist with narrow sleeves, stand collar or no collar at all. Верхней одеждой служили различные виды кафтанов, обязательно приталенных и расклешенных от талии, с узкими рукавами, со стоячим воротником или без воротника вовсе. Чаще всего верхняя одежда была темного цвета, но у знати — белая или светло-серая. Верхний кафтан обязательно подпоясывался и часто украшался отделкой.

Imagine you are walking along one of the streets in a modern capital and a group of children or teen-agers come up to you and throw buckets of water over you. You become so confused and embarrassed without knowing what to do. Whether to call the police or protest or begin to cry? It's quite difficult to answer this question when you are in France or Germany or Russia or in some other country. But when you are in Armenia the answer is simple: you have nothing to do but smile and laugh a lot as it's a national holiday called Vardavar which is celebrated on 14th Sunday followed after the Easter. Vardavar is one of the beloved, joyful and memorable holidays of Armenia. According to an ancient legend in pagan era it was devoted to Atghik, a pagan goddess of love and water. Some experts assert that the holiday is connected with the Flood and Noah who orders his sons to spray water to each other in commemoration of the flood. Today Vardavar is devoted to the great event of Christ's transformation. It's a well-spread tradition to spray water to each other in Vardavar which is still maintained. Since morning both the old and the young water each other with buckets. Noone gets offended with one another. People are very kind and happy that day whereas for the young and the children it's the most expected and favourite holiday of the year.

Armenia is a country in the Caucasus. It is situated in the North geographical region of Western Asia and North-East of the Armenian highland. Armenia has no outlet to the sea. It has borders with Azerbaijan, with Iran in the South, Turkey to the West and Georgia to the North. Sights Of Armenia Armenia is a country rich in monuments of culture and nature, why it is called "Museum under the open sky." In Armenia there are more than 4 thousand unique monuments. Among them — the monuments of pre-Christian era: the ruins of the Urartian Erebuni Teishebaini, ancient Armenian capitals of Armavir, Artashat, the Hellenistic temple of Garni Helios and others.

Armenia is especially rich in monuments of the Christian architecture. It is the Cathedral in Ejmiatsin, monasteries of Noravank, Geghard, Khor Virap, Goshavank, Sevanavank, ruins of ancient Church of Zvartnots, a cemetery of cross-stones in Noraduz and many others. Among the monuments of nature, you can celebrate the unique lake Sevan, Jermuk waterfall, lake Parz and Kari, the rocks of Khndzoresk, as well as beautiful and diverse mountain landscape of the country.

The sacred mountain of the Armenians. The symbol of Armenia, is present on the modern coat of arms of the Republic of Armenia. Ararat is located in Turkey. Consists of two fused bases of the cones of dormant volcanoes: greater Ararat and lesser Ararat. The top of the Great Ararat (5165 meters above sea level) is the highest point of Turkey.

Small and Large Ararat

The Bible mentions "the mountains of Ararat". Noah's ark according to the Bible, ran aground on one of the mountains of the land of Ararat (Genesis 8:4): "And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat."Ararat is perhaps the most famous symbol of Armenia. Famous seascape painter Ivan Aivazovsky wrote the mount Ararat at least ten times. At the exhibition in Paris, on the question of the presence in his work of the Armenian types Aivazovsky said: "That's our Armenia" and led to the painting "Descent of Noah from Ararat". According to the Moscow and the Kars treaties of 1921, the territory of Ararat moved from the Armenian SSR to Turkey. According to legend, in response to the protest of the Turkish government against the fact that, on the coat of arms of the Armenian SSR depicted Ararat, not part of Armenia, the people's Commissar for foreign Affairs Chicherin replied: "the flag of the Turkish Crescent, but the Moon is not part of Turkey."

The full name of the country is The Republic of Armenia, the local – Hayastan. The capital is the city Yerevan since 1920. The population in 1997 was 1 million 202 thousand people. Armenia is divided into 10 provinces: the Aragatsotn, the Ararat,the Armavir, the Gegarakunik, the Lorry, the Kotaik, the Chirac, the Sunik, the Tavush, the Voyoc Dzor and the capital area. The area of the country makes 29800 km ². The state is located in the western Asia, it has no exit to seas. Armenia is a highland, the most part of which is within the limits of the Armenian uplands (the highest point is mountain Aragats, it is 4090 м). The general extent of borders is 1254 km. it Has borders with Azerbaijan, Turkey, Georgia, Iran.

Structure of a surface. The republic of Armenia is located in northeast of the Armenian uplands. Here is the difficult combination of folded and volcanic mountains, accumulative plains, river valleys and lake hollows. About 90 % of the area of the country is at the heights more than 1000 m above the sea level. In the northeast of Armenia there are mountains of the central part of the Small Caucasus.

The rivers and lakes. The main and the longest river in Armenia is the Araks, which flows along borders with Turkey and Iran. The left inflow of Araks is the river Razdan following from lake Sevan, has the important hydropower value.From more of hundred lakes of Armenia the largest is the Sevan. It serves as a natural water basin for the river Razdan with the cascade of hydroelectric power stations. The Sevan is used as a zone of rest.

Climate. There are six climatic areas in Armenia. In an extreme southeast the climate is dry subtropical, with long hot summers and the soft snowless winters. In foothills around the plain Ararat the climate is moderately dry, with warm summers, cold winters and plentiful precipitations. In the north of the country the is climate moderately cold, with cool summer and frosty winters with plentiful snowfalls.
