This is Britain Great Britain has several different names. Some people say “ Britain”, or “the United Kingdom”, or just “U K”. There are four different countries in the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (see the map). Every from Britain is British, but only people from England are English. People from Scotland are Scottish, people from Wales are Welsh, and people from Northern Ireland are Irish. Don ‘t call a Scottish or Welsh person English. He won’ t like it.

Languages Everyone in Britain speaks English. But in some parts of Scotland and Wales people speak an older language as well. The Welsh are especially proud of their language, and you can see road signs in Welsh all over Wales. Everyone speaks English, but they do not all speak it in the same way. A Scottish person has to listen carefully if he wants to understand a Londoner. And when a Welsh person speaks, everyone knows at once where he comes from!

The Weather Many people think that the weather is cold and wet in Britain all the year round. But it isn’t! True, it sometimes rains and even snows for days and days. When it rains heavily, the British say “It’s raining cats and dogs”. But every year there are week s of beautiful and sunny weather when the British put on their bikinis and go out to sunbathe.

Northern Ireland Britain is only a small country, but every part is different. Northern Ireland is marvelous. In the warm, wet climate, the grass grows a brilliant green. Irish poets call Ireland “the Emerald Isle”. The harp is among the chief symbols of Ireland.

Scotland Scotland is a land of mountains, lakes and romantic castles. The winters are cold, with plenty of snow, but the summers are often warm and sunny. Most farmers keep sheep. Deer live in the hills, and the rivers are full of salmon and trout. In some parts of Scotland, there are very few people.

Wales Wales is a special place, a country of high mountains and pretty valleys. The people of Wales are fond of folk music, singing, poetry and drama. Every year they have a festival of Welsh music and poetry called an “Eisteddfod”. The Welsh are known to have very nice voices which are well suited for choral singing.

England England is the largest, the most densely populated part of the UK. Each part of England is different. Lake District in Northern England with its lakes, mountains and valleys is a favorite holiday resort. The sea has always been important in the history of England. It was a good protection against the attacks of outside peoples.

The history of London London has been a capital city for nearly a thousand years, and many of its ancient buildings still stand. Once, London was a small Roman town on the bank of the Thames, but slowly it grew into one of the world’s major cities. Different areas of London seem like different cities.

Busy London Many people live outside the center of London in the suburbs, and they travel to work by train, bus or underground. Every day, nearly half a million office workers travel into the “City”, the business center of banks and offices. During “rush hours” the trains, buses and streets are crowded with people. By day the whole of London is busy. At night, the City is quiet and empty, but the West End stays alive, because this is where Londoners come to enjoy themselves.

Red London Many people think that London is all grey, but in fact red is London’s favorite color. The buses are red, the letter boxes are red, and the mail vans are all bright, bright red. London is at its best when people are celebrating. Then the flags , the soldiers’ uniforms, the cheering crowds and carriages and horses all sparkle in the sunshine-if it’s not raining, of course!

Edinburgh Edinburgh is Scotland’s capital, one of the most beautiful cities in Britain. The heart of Edinburgh is the thousand-year-old castle, where the kings of Scotland lived for centuries. Edinburgh has a busy cultural life. Every year, in S eptember, the international festival takes place. Musicians ,actors and singers come all over the world and thousands of visitors fill the city. The castle is at its best in Festival time. Every night there is a magnificent military “ Tattoo”. Highland soldiers wearing “kilts” play the bagpipes, and march to the music.

Scottish tartans Tartans, the patterns of the kilts, have an interesting history. Since the fifteenth century, each Scottish family ( or “ clan” ) has won its own tartan as a kind of badge. It was a useful way of recognizing people, especially in times of war. Everybody in the clan had the same family name, like MacDonald or MacGregor (Mac means “son of”). The clan had its own territory and was ruled by a chieftain.

Oxford and Cambridge Oxford and Cambridge are two oldest universities in England. Both of these university towns are very beautiful. They have some of the finest architecture in Britain. Some of their colleges, chapels and libraries are three, four and even five hundred years old, and are full of valuable books and precious paintings. Both towns have many lovely gardens, where the students can read and relax in the summer months. These universities are famous all over the world for their first class education. It is not easy to get a place a t the Universities to study for a degree.

Stately homes Some of the aristocratic families of Britain still have a lot of money, and some live in magnificent “stately homes” build by their families hundreds of years ago. Most stately homes are filled with wonderful collections of paintings and furniture .A lot of the houses are open to the public now. In this way everyone can enjoy the great cultural treasures of the past.

Exercises How much did you understand? Which part of Britain do these people come from? a) Susan is a student at the oldest university in England. b)The road signs near Margaret’s house are in two languages. c) Jim Macdonald wears a kilt on special occasions. d) Chris Taylor does most of her shopping in Oxford Street.

The United Kingdom

The United Kingdom is an advanced European island country. It is surrounded by three bodies of water: the North Sea, in the eastern part, the English Channel in the southern part, and the Atlantic Ocean in the west. The country consists of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The term “United Kingdom” is often confused with the term “Great Britain”, which is the name of the island, but not the state. Many smaller islands and adjacent territories form an integral part of this country, as well as the area of Northern Ireland in the northwest. The total area of the country is 242,500 sq. km. The population is over 67 million people, according to the 2020 statistical data.

The British landscape is diverse. It includes flat countryside, low hills, and a long line of high mountains. In this unique island country, the climate is rather mild and a bit humid. This geographical region is known for its warm weather in winter, and cool weather in summer, combined with intense rainfall and baffling winds over the year.

There are numerous rivers and lakes in the UK. The water resources of great importance are the largest river the Thames, the longest one called the Severn, and many smaller rivers like the Mersey, the Clyde, and the Tyne. These natural resources play a critical role in the water supply of the nation. Unfortunately, the UK has already been affected by the ongoing climate change. The nation experiences increased rainfall, storms, and heatwaves.

London, the official capital city and influential administrative center, is one of the most densely populated megalopolises in the world. Its population is over 9.2 million people. The major cities are Manchester, famous for its industrial heritage, Birmingham, Leeds, and Glasgow.

They are recognized as significant cultural, commercial, and industrial centers that contribute to the nation’s economic growth and sustainable social development. Many highly acclaimed universities and colleges can be found in the UK.

The UK has mixed economy that allows the nation to succeed both in international trade, the manufacturing industry, agriculture, and the services sector. Tourism is the number one national industry that keeps the UK economy flourishing. There are many places of huge interest in this popular destination that attract visitors from all over the world. Among them are the majestic Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, and the British Museum in London.

Britain in Brief

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland with an area of 244 000 square miles is situated on the British Isles, which are separated from the European continent by the North Sea, the Strait of Dover and the English Channel.

Britain’s population is over 56 million. Four out of five people live in towns. The largest cities of the country are London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The UK is a monarchy: the head of the state is a king or a queen. In practice, the Sovereign reigns, but does not rule: the UK is governed by the Government. The present Sovereign is Queen Elizabeth II.

The territory of Great Britain is small. Yet the country has a wide variety of scenery.

The heart of Britain is England. It is the richest, the most fertile and most populated in the country. The north and the west of England are mountainous, but all the rest of territory is a vast plain. In Northwest England, there are many beautiful lakes with green, wooded or grassy shores and grey mountains all around.

The smallest of Britain’s countries is Wales. The largest part of Wales is covered with rocky mountains, which are difficult to climb. Most people in Wales live in the coastal plains.

Scotland is a land of mountains, wild moorlands, narrow valleys and plains, famous lakes and no end of large and small islands. The Highlands of Scotland are among the oldest mountains in the world. One-third of the people in Scotland live in or near its capital, Edinburgh, and its great industrial center, Glasgow. The capital of Great Britain, London, stands on the Thames. The Thames is the busiest and the most important river in Great Britain, but it is not very long. The climate of Great Britain is mild
