State Symbols of Russia
The state symbols of Russia are the Russian flag, the hymn of Russia and the coat of arms (герб).
The State Russian flag is three-coloured. It has three horizontal stripes: white, blue and red. The white stripe stands for the earth, the blue one stands for the sky, and the red one stands for liberty.
The national emblem of Russia is the double-headed eagle. It is the most ancient symbol of Russia. Originally, it was one of the symbols of the Byzantine Empire. It was introduced in Russia in 1497 by Tsar Ivan III after he had married the niece of the last Byzantine Emperor, Sophia.
The Russian coat of arms consists of the double-headed eagle which has the figure of a horse rider who spears a viper upon its breast.
Another symbol of Russia is Spasskaya Tower, because the Kremlin clock is on it.

The official name of the country is the Russian Federation or the RF.
Under the Constitution of 1993 Russia is a Presidential Republic. It is headed by the President who is elected for a four-year term. The President is commander–in–chef of the armed forces, he makes treaties, enforces laws, appoints the Prime Minister, cabinet members, and key judges. The first Russian president was Boris Eltsin (since 1991).

The most famous unofficial symbols of Russia
In addition to the traditional symbols as the coat-of arm, flag and anthem, each country has a number of other national symbols that denote country-specific history, culture and life.
Red Square Red Square is the main square of our country. It hosts military parades, demonstrations and other important events. In the old days, Red Square looked different and it was a market place. Here on 7,November of 1941, the annual parade in honor of the 24th anniversary of the October revolution was held despite the active offensive of the Nazis. Here on 24 June 1945 there was a Victory Parade where victorious people carried Nazi banners and threw them at the foot of the Mausoleum as a sign of complete defeat of the invaders.
The Kremlin Old Russian cities were started with the Kremlin which means the fortress. The Kremlin needed to protect the population from enemies, the Kremlin was the place where government and noble people lived. The site on which the Moscow Kremlin stands is called the Borovitsky hill. The Moscow Kremlin as we know it now, dates back to the late 15th century. It was built by Italian masters. The Kremlin has 20 towers, and each of them has its own history and destiny. The walls of the Kremlin is from 8 to 19 m, and their total length is 2235 m.
THE KREMLIN CHIMES One of 20 towers, the Spasskaya, has a world famous clock-chimes. It`s a huge astronomical clock: its face has a diameter of 6 m, and each digit is 72 cm high. Russia has changed a lot for the last century – the rulers, the system of government, but the clock on the Spasskaya tower still sounds, and it is difficult to imagine Russia without this symbol.
WHITE BIRCH Russia is a country of birches. Birch has always been considered a symbol of Russia, symbol of spirituality, prosperity and longevity. The word "birch" came about the 7th century and comes from the verb "to protect". In pagan times the ancient Slavs worshiped the deity who was considered the mother of all spirits - The Keeper. The Keeper was a symbol of fertility, and the protector of the people.
MATRYOSHKA Russian matryoshka is probably the most popular national souvenir. The toy got its name from the common name Matryona, or Matryoshka. At first these dolls depicted a simple country girls painted in bright sundresses and headscarves. It`s a complex product carved from lime wood on a lathe. Russian nesting dolls are very famous abroad. This is one of the most popular Russian souvenirs.
BEAR The bear is another unofficial symbol of Russia. This is one of the largest predators of the planet. It's just strong, powerful, cunning, and fierce. The apparent awkwardness can be extremely turned into agility. The bear is a symbol both of kindness and rage. Russians are compared with bears, on one hand, because of their slowness and kindness, and on the other hand because of their ability to stand up for themselves. Therefore the bear was chosen as a symbol of The Olympic Games in 1980.
Troika Troika was a traditional Russian transport in which 3 horses drew sleighs, carts, or covered wagons. It was a well known lively fun and the fastest method of movement that caused vivid emotions . After all, everyone knows the phrase of N. V. Gogol: "What Russian does not love fast driving?". Troika has become a worthy symbol of Russia, representing Russian daring and mysterious soul.

Symbols of Russia - Символы России
Символы – официальные и неофициальные, пропагандистско-стререотипные и лингво-культурные - играют важную роль в формировании имиджа страны и нации и повышают их узнаваемость.
The official and non-official, propagandistic –and- stereotyped, and linguistic - and - cultural symbols play an important role in formation of a country and a nation’s image; they build up its recognition.
Визуальная репрезентация государства и национальной культуры привлекает не только политологов, социологов и культурологов, но и обычных людей , которые, собственно, создают эти яркие, запоминающиеся символы-образы.
The visual representation of a state and of the national culture interests and attracts not only politicologists, sociologists and culturologists, but also for common people, like those who create these vivid memorable symbols and images.
Символы России и русских достаточно разнообразны. К официальным, т.е. утвержденным законом, символам государства относятся всего три - флаг, герб и гимн. Количество неофициальных, зачастую более известных и распространенных, гораздо больше, и их можно условно выделить в следующие группы:
Symbols of Russia and Russians are quite diverse . There are only three official, i.e. authorized by law , symbols of the state - the flag , emblem and anthem . The number of informal symbols , which are often much more famous and popular , could be divided into the following groups:
P ropagandistic- and- stereotyped symbols created by foreigners:
а) несущие социальные мифы и политические иллюзии (медведь, водка, КГБ, автомат Калашникова)
a ) they usually support the social myths and political illusions ( bear, vodka , KGB, Kalashnikov’s gun )
б) связанные с национально-повседневной культурой (матрешка, бабалайка, самовар, шапка-ушанка, тройка, etc.)
b ) they are associated with the national every day culture ( matryoshka, babalaika , samovar , a hat with ear- flaps , three-horse sled, etc. )
(For example, the word "тоска" could be traslated as “anguish” , “ sorrow” , “ grief ", but no one is correct)
After such propaganda brain-wash, it is not wonder that some foreigners still see Russia as a dangerous enemy and an “Empire of Evil”. (By the way, in my opinion, Russia is now second-place after Muslims for being “evil”, “all of them being terrorists”). The false judgement is actually very insulting (I speak for the Muslims as well). Others consider Russia a remote, snowed-up country full of bears and KGB where drunk Russians playing the balalaika amidst matryoshkas and samovars. It is hardly worth saying today that contemporary life in Russia has very little to do with any of that. What can I say? Never believe stereotypes! It’s much better to visit Russia and look at it with your own eyes.
The flag One Russian symbol is the Russian national flag. The stripes are white, blue and red. These colours have always been symbolic in Russia : white-noble and sincere, blue-honest and devoted-devoted to friends, family and to the country. The red colour has always meant love and bravery.
The hymn The hymn of Russia is a very solemn song, written by Mikhalkov and Alexandrov .
The national emblem The national emblem is – a two headed eagle. It is the most ancient symbol of Russia.
The unofficial symbols of Russia There are some unofficial symbols of Russia, which all people know and love. One of them is the birch tree . You can find these trees everywhere.

Сегодня в основной части Тауэра расположен музей и оружейная палата. Биг-Бен является самым большим колоколом Вестминстерского дворца. Это название относят и к Часовой башне. Четырехсторонние часы с боем на ней являются самыми большими в мире. Красные автобусы и красные телефонные будки являются символами Великобритании и ассоциируются с Лондоном.
Америка. Статуя Свободы стала совместным франко-американским проектом, и является символом свободы американского народа. Пьедестал был создан американцами, а статуя – французами. Памятник был разделен на 350 частей и перевезен в Америку, где его собрали в единое целое. McDonald’s ассоциируется с Америкой. В нем продаются гамбургеры, являющиеся популярным блюдом фастфуда, которое состоит из котлеты внутри булки с разнообразными приправами. Другие известные американские атрибуты: яблочный пирог, бейсбол, бурбон, Микки Маус, Лас-Вегас и др.
Бразилия. Это страна, которая влюбляет в себя с первого же взгляда, покоряя и маня. Статуя Спасителя в Рио-де-Жанейро – символ Бразилии, который является одним из Новых Семи Чудес Света. Футбол и Бразилия – неразрывное целое. Футбол у бразильцев в крови! Сборная Бразилии по футболу – единственная в мире участвовала во всех Чемпионатах Мира и пять раз становилась чемпионом. Еще одна страсть – танцы. Каждый год в феврале в Рио-де-Жанейро проходит знаменитый бразильский карнавал – 4 суток неутомимого веселья, костюмированных шествий и самбы. В Бразилии производят лучший в мире кофе, но коренные жители любимым напитком называют какао.
Австралия. Национальным символом этой страны является веджимайт – дрожжевая синтетическая смесь. Изображение кенгуру присутствует на гербе государства. Это узнаваемый во всем мире символ. Коала также ассоциируется с Австралией. Внешне животное напоминает медведя, питается только листьями эвкалипта.
Франция за свою многовековую историю приобрела много символов, при упоминании о которых всем ясно, о какой стране идет речь. Она является родиной Д’Артаньяна, страной прекрасных вин. Одним из всемирно известных символов Франции является Эйфелева башня, названная в честь архитектора, создавшего ее. Сегодня она является телевизионной башней для всего Парижа. Жанна д’Арк – национальная героиня, которая участвовала в сражениях во время Столетней войны, была сожжена на костре, а позже ее причислили к лику святых.
Германия. Бранденбургские ворота известны во всем мире, ассоциируются с воссоединением страны в 1989 году. Дрезденская картинная галерея – это величайшая сокровищница живописи. Германия также известна своим знаменитым баварским пивом и сосисками .
Испания. Известные национальные символы Испании – коррида, фламенко, бык. Коррида имеет свои правила, ритуалы. Она начинается с традиционного шествия матадоров, пикадоров. Бык олицетворял собой силу, победить его считалось большим достижением. Скульптуру черного быка можно встретить во многих местах Испании.
Япония. Это уникальная страна с многовековой историей. Символов у этой страны очень много. Это гора Фудзияма (Фудзи), императорская печать, хризантема и сакура, а также самураи, национальные куклы, непревзойденная кухня, образ кошки (нэко), зеленый фазан (кидзи), енотовидная собака (тануки) и т.д.
