I would like to tell you about shopping in the United Kingdom. Marks & Spencer is Britain’s favorite store. Tourists love it too. It attracts a great variety of customers from house wives to millionaires. Princess Diana, Dustin Hoffman and the British Prime-minister are just a few of its famous customers. Last year it made a profit of 529 million pounds. Which is more than 10 million a week.
The store bases its business on 3 principals: good value, good quality and good service. Also, it changes with the times; once it was all jumpers and knickers. Now it is food, furniture and flowers as well. Top fashion designers advice on styles of clothes. Perhaps, the most important key to its success is its happy well-trained staff. Conditions of work are excellent. There are company doctors, dentists, hairdressers, etc. And all the staff can have lunch for under 40 pence.
Shopping in Britain is also famous for its Freshfood. Freshfood is a chain of food stores and very successful supermarkets which has grown tremendously in the twenty years since it was founded, and now it has branches in the High Streets of all the towns of any size in Britain. In the beginning the stores sold only foodstuffs, but in recent years they have diversified enormously and now sell clothes, books, records, electrical and domestic equipment. The success of the chain has been due to an enterprising management and to attractive layout and display in the stores. It has been discovered that impulse buying accounts for almost 35 per cent of the total turnover of the stores. The stores are organized completely for self-service and customers are encouraged to wander around the spaciously laid out stands. Special free gifts and reduced prices are used to tempt customers into the stores and they can’t stand the temptation.

Number one leisure activity
The British, in the words of Napoleon, is 'a nation of shopkeepers‘. They are also a country of compulsive shoppers. They love to shop! It is their number one leisure activity and accounts for around 37% of all money spent in England.
Number one leisure activity
The main shopping street in many towns is called the High Street, where you should head for if you want to go shopping.
A few small shops are owned by local people. Most are owned by national 'chains' of stores. This makes many town centres look the same.
Some towns also have street markets where fresh food and cheap goods can be bought
. Away from the town centre, small 'corner' shops provide groceries to local customers.

Time to go shopping
Peak shopping days are Saturdays and Sundays.
Shops are generally open on Bank Holidays.
Bank Holidays are a great time to shop as there are many sales on especially around Easter and Christmas.
Shopping Hours
In England, most retail shops are generally open 6 or 7 days a week.
Sunday – 10 am to 4 pm (or 11 am to 5 pm)
Sunday shopping has become popular in recent years and most large shops in towns are open for business. Shops are only allowed to trade for 6 hours on Sundays.
Large supermarkets are open for 24 hours except for Sundays.
Many supermarkets and superstores otherwise open from 8am until 10pm from Mondays to Saturdays and 10 am to 4 pm (or 11 am to 5pm) on Sundays.
Public Holidays / Bank Holidays
On public holidays some shops open and some shops do not. As a general rule banks will be closed, most supermarkets and large stores will be open (although with reduced Sunday opening hours), and in larger towns many shops will open.
Bank Holiday Shop opening times 10am to 4pm (or 11am to 5pm)
Over the Christmas and New Year period, all shops are closed on Christmas Day (December 25) and a some shops are closed on New Year's Day (January 1). However, an increasing number of shops are now opening on Boxing Day (December 26), which is when many start their 'New Year' sales.
It is likely that most shopping centres will be closed on Easter Sunday and there will be reduced shopping hours on Easter Monday (often from either 10 or 11 o'clock in the morning).
In Villages
Some rural shops still follow the tradition of an early closing day (usually Wednesday) when the shops close at 1.00pm.
Banking Hours
The major high street banks in England and Wales are Lloyds, Barclays, Midland and National Westminster (Nat West). In Scotland they are the Bank of Scotland, the Royal Bank of Scotland and the Clydesdale Bank.
Generally Monday-Friday 9:30 am-3:30 pm. Some branches stay open until 5:30 pm, and a few are open Saturday morning.
Most banks will have an ATM (Automated Teller Machine) outside the bank where you can draw out money with a credit or cash card. Many of these are available to use 24 hours a day, but some do still close for a few hours during the night.
The Largest Shopping Centre
Bluewater is the largest out of town shopping development in Europe, located in a disused chalk pit at Dartford in Kent. With more than 300 shops and parking for 13,000 cars, it attracts around 30 million visitors each year.

Overflowing with street markets, curbside entertainment, trendy cafes, English pubs, and small boutiques. A must visit for all tourists to London.
Charringcross Road
Charring Cross Road is where book worms go. Mainstream bookshops, such as Foyles, Borders and Blackwells, line the street but perhaps the most unique feature about this road are its rare, second-hand and specialist shops. Foyles is famous for five floors containing thousands of titles.
Tottenham Court Road
The best place for electronics shops and furniture stores.

This store has an extensive designer section for both men, women and children, constantly updated by the arrival of international labels.
Hamleys. (Regent Street. Nearest Tube: Oxford Circus )
Hamley`s is every child`s dream come true. It offers seven floors of toys for all ages – from traditional soldiers, dolls and trains to high-tech computer games and robots.

Petticoat Lane Market is a great place for bargain clothes and shoes.
Nearest Tube: Liverpool Street
Portobello Market a place to buy antiques, clothes, shoes, bric-a-brac and organic fruit and vegetables all in one place.

Camden Market has become one of London's top attractions. You can find hippie cloths, craft stalls, 70's nostalgia and vegetarian food.

The United Kingdom
The United Kingdom is an advanced European island country. It is surrounded by three bodies of water: the North Sea, in the eastern part, the English Channel in the southern part, and the Atlantic Ocean in the west. The country consists of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The term “United Kingdom” is often confused with the term “Great Britain”, which is the name of the island, but not the state. Many smaller islands and adjacent territories form an integral part of this country, as well as the area of Northern Ireland in the northwest. The total area of the country is 242,500 sq. km. The population is over 67 million people, according to the 2020 statistical data.
The British landscape is diverse. It includes flat countryside, low hills, and a long line of high mountains. In this unique island country, the climate is rather mild and a bit humid. This geographical region is known for its warm weather in winter, and cool weather in summer, combined with intense rainfall and baffling winds over the year.
There are numerous rivers and lakes in the UK. The water resources of great importance are the largest river the Thames, the longest one called the Severn, and many smaller rivers like the Mersey, the Clyde, and the Tyne. These natural resources play a critical role in the water supply of the nation. Unfortunately, the UK has already been affected by the ongoing climate change. The nation experiences increased rainfall, storms, and heatwaves.
London, the official capital city and influential administrative center, is one of the most densely populated megalopolises in the world. Its population is over 9.2 million people. The major cities are Manchester, famous for its industrial heritage, Birmingham, Leeds, and Glasgow.
They are recognized as significant cultural, commercial, and industrial centers that contribute to the nation’s economic growth and sustainable social development. Many highly acclaimed universities and colleges can be found in the UK.
The UK has mixed economy that allows the nation to succeed both in international trade, the manufacturing industry, agriculture, and the services sector. Tourism is the number one national industry that keeps the UK economy flourishing. There are many places of huge interest in this popular destination that attract visitors from all over the world. Among them are the majestic Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, and the British Museum in London.

Oxford street is a very big and popular shopping center in London. There are clothes shops and shoe shops, book shops and dress shops.
One of the largest department stores in Oxford Street is Selfridges. It has more than 300 departments on 6 floors, 2500 employees (people who work there) and every day more than 100000 people from all over the world walk its doors, eat in its 5 restaurants and use its four lifts and three escalators.
In early days there were gardens on the roof and many people came and looked famous Selfridge lifts. Today it is famous for its window displays at Christmas.
Selfridge is a very expensive department store, that is why most Londoners have to go to cheaper shops: Marks and Spencer’s for clothes and food supermarkets for food.
Supermarkets have become very popular with shoppers. They sell not only food, but also ready made clothes, toys and other goods. They are self-service shops.
