Benjamin Franklin (January 17, 1706 April 17, 1790) was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America. A noted polymath, Franklin was a leading author and printer, satirist, political theorist, politician, scientist, inventor, civic activist, statesman, soldier, and diplomat. As a scientist, he was a major figure in the Enlightenment and the history of physics for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity. He invented the lightning rod, bifocals, the Franklin stove, a carriage odometer, and the glass 'armonica'. He formed both the first public lending library in America and the first fire department in Pennsylvania. He was an early proponent of colonial unity, and as a political writer and activist, he supported the idea of an American nation. As a diplomat during the American Revolution, he secured the French alliance that helped to make independence of the United States possible.

Franklin is credited as being foundational to the roots of American values and character, a marriage of the practical and democratic Puritan values of thrift, hard work, education, community spirit, self-governing institutions, and opposition to authoritarianism both political and religious, with the scientific and tolerant values of the Enlightenment.

His colorful life and legacy of scientific and political achievement, and status as one of America’s most influential Founding Fathers, have seen Franklin honored on coinage and money; warships; the names of many towns, counties, educational institutions, namesakes, and companies; and more than two centuries after his death, countless cultural references.

Famous Americans There were and there are many famous people who played an important role in shaping American life and culture. They influenced also people’s life in other countries. These are people who make our life more interesting.

George Washington Americans celebrate the birthday of their first president on February 22. During the War of Independence he took command of the Continental Army and won independence of Britain. Americans called George Washington “Father of Fatherland”.

From Washington’s writings Associate yourself with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation. It is better be alone than in bad company. Elvis Presley Some people didn’t like his singing, and they couldn’t stay his dancing. They thought him horrible and vulgar. However, Elvis Presley was the most popular performer of his days. Thousands of fans admired him. He developed a new style in music. Elvis’s songs are still popular today.

Marilyn Monroe Blonde hair, bright smile… She is called the most attractive woman of the 20th century. Marilyn Monroe, original name Norma J. Baker, was born in Los Angeles in a very poor family and became the most popular actress of her time.

Marilyn Monroe She lived a short but very bright life. Millions of men admired her, millions of women envied her. Marilyn was not happy. She didn’t get interesting film roles. Her family life turned out badly. Her death at the age of 36 was a mystery and is still a mystery.

Walt Disney Walt Disney began to draw at the age of 4 and he liked it very much. When he was 6 he sold his pictures to his neighbors. When he was 8 he made money selling newspapers.

Walt Disney Disney made a lot of wonderful cartoons for kids and adults, among them Cinderella , 1950, Alice in Wonderland , 1951,Peter Pan , 1953 and Sleeping Beauty , 1959. Besides the fiction films – Treasure Island , 1950, and Mary Poppins , 1964, Disney made some documentary films Natures Half Acre , The Living Desert and The Vanishing Prairie .

Madonna Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone, the third of eight children in a large traditional Italian family. In high school Madonna was a cheerleader and straight-A student. She fell in love with dance and sometimes spent up to five hours a day taking dance classes and working out.

Madonna Madonna set off for New York City in 1977 with just $35. She worked as the assistant to modern dance choreographer. Then she turned her energies to music, and the rest, as you know, is a historical and legendary work in progress.

1st President of the United States

Thus one of the most well-known statesmen of the USAGeorge Washington (February 22, 1732 [O.S. February 11, 1731] – December 14, 1799) was the dominant military and political leader of the new United States of America from 1775 to 1799. He led the American victory over Great Britain in the American Revolutionary War as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army in 1775–1783, and presided over the writing of the Constitution in 1787. The unanimous choice to serve as the first President of the United States (1789–1797), Washington presided over the creation of a strong, well-financed national government that stayed neutral in the wars raging in Europe, suppressed rebellion and won acceptance among Americans of all types. His leadership style established many forms and rituals of government that have been used ever since, such as using a cabinet system and delivering an inaugural address. Washington is universally regarded as the "Father of his Country".

Thomas Jefferson (April 13, 1743 – July 4, 1826) was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence (1776) and the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom (1777), the third President of the United States (1801–1809) and founder of the University of Virginia (1819).[1] He was an influential Founding Father and an exponent of Jeffersonian democracy.

Abraham Lincoln was born in 1809. His father was a poor farmer and the boy had to work much on their small farm. But he read a lot, too. When he grew older he felt a strong interest to law. He became a lawyer and he always tried to use the law to defend people. In 1846 he was elected to Congress. There he said he was against slavery. In 1860 he became the President of the USA. In 1864 Abraham Lincoln was elected the President again, but a year later he was killed by his enemies in a theatre in Washington.

Harry S. Truman (May 8, 1884 – December 26, 1972) was the 33rd President of the United States (1945–1953). As President Franklin D. Roosevelt's third vice president and the 34th Vice President of the United States (1945), he succeeded to the presidency on April 12, 1945, when President Roosevelt died less than three months after beginning his historic fourth term . Truman's presidency was also eventful in foreign affairs, with the defeat of Nazi Germany and his decision to use nuclear weapons against Japan, the founding of the United Nations, the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe, the Truman Doctrine to contain communism, the beginning of the Cold War, the Berlin Airlift, the creation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Chinese Civil War, and the Korean War.

Thomas Alva Edison

An American inventor, Thomas Alva Edison, was born in Ohio in 1847. His family was not rich and the boy’s education was limited to three months in the public school. When he was 12 he started to work. Several years later Edison learned telegraphy and became a telegraph operator. He wanted to improve the telegraph system and worked very hard at it. After a few months of work he built a transmitter of a new kind. This was his first important invention. The other two of Edison’s greatest inventions were the gramophone and the electric lamp. Edison believed that only work could bring success.

O. Henry was the pen name of the American writer William Sydney Porter (September 11, 1862 – June 5, 1910). O. Henry's short stories are well known for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization and clever twist endings. O. Henry's stories are famous for their surprise endings, to the point that such an ending is often referred to as an "O. Henry ending." He was called the American answer to Guy de Maupassant. Both authors wrote twist endings, but O. Henry stories were much more playful. His stories are also well known for witty narration. Most of O. Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American clergyman, activist, and prominent leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He is best known for being an iconic figure in the advancement of civil rights in the United States and around the world, using nonviolent methods following the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and racial discrimination through civil disobedience and other nonviolent means. By the time of his death in 1968, he had refocused his efforts on ending poverty and stopping the Vietnam War. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and Congressional Gold Medal in 2004; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a U.S. federal holiday in 1986.

Most people know Albert Einstein from the picture above their blackboard and only remember that he was considered to be a very stupid person. Although in reality he completely changed the way we perceive time and space, gravity and energy.

George Washington is thought to be the Father of American history. For twenty years he was leading the county to greater future. He believed that hard work, public service and worshiping of God is the key to successful life. Due to his outstanding character he became the first President of the country. No other American is honored the way Washington is.

Before becoming the most beloved person in Great Britain, Princess Diana worked as a cook or a nanny in the kindergarten. When she became a part of a royal family she did a lot of charity. People adored her. Although not everything was so good. She was unhappy in her marriage with the Prince. And right before her death she received a divorce. Her story shows that even Prince Charming may be not the right one for you. Diana was killed in a car accident and her death is still a complete mystery.

So, learning such stories helps us realize the value of each moment of history. We can learn and develop on the basis of these people’s stories and that opens great opportunities for everyone.
