Elementary, my dear Watson…
With the words “ Elementary, my dear Watson…”, the most famous detective of all time, Sherlock Holmes, starts to explain to his friend, Dr. Watson. That phrase has now entered the English language.
Sherlock Holmes first appeared in 1882. He became famous in “Adventures of Sherlock Holmes”. After that came the whole series of books about him :” The Memoir of Sherlock Holmes”, “ The Return of Sherlock Holmes”, “ The Hound of the Baskervilles” and many others. Many thousands of the Sherlock Holmes books are still sold every year.
Who invented Sherlock Holmes? Arthur Conan Doyle was his inventor. He was a doctor. In 1882 he moved from Scotland to England to set up a practice. One of the doctors he worked for, Dr. Joseph Bell, was the model for Sherlock Holmes’s friend, Dr. Watson. Conan Doyle’s medical Knowledge was a great help to him in his detective stories.
Conan Doyle started the fashion of the detective story. Today the fashion goes on.
And what sort of man is Sherlock Holmes? We learn a lot about him from the stories in which he appears. He is a quiet man, who only speaks when he has something to say. He smokes a pipe /he has a collection of them/. He plays the violin. He carries a larg е magnifying glass. He lives at Baker Street in London.
He was the skilful and clever detective. Sherlock Holmes’s method of analysing the most difficult problems was to notice the smallest facts, even if they seemed unimportant. His method never failed, the criminal always had to give up, and become the prisoner of the great detective.
If Sherlock Holmes were alive today, he would be more than 140 years old. You can say it from the books about him. He would certainly no longer be living at 221 B Baker Street.
But letters addressed to him continue to arrive at Baker Street. Many people write to the great detective asking him for help. Sometimes there
are such phrases in the letters: “ The police can’t do anything. Please, help.” Or I ask you’ please hurry. ''
If you go to London, you will not be able to find Baker Street. But instead, you can go to a pub called “ The Sherlock Holmes”. In that pub there is a room exactly like Sherlock Holmes’s room at Baker Street as described in Conan Doyle’s stories. On the walls there are drawings from the original editions of the Sherlock Holmes books.

Sherlock Holmes is a character of the works written by Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock Holmes is a detective. He has the wonderful skills of observation and logical reasoning. He is described as a “consulting detective”. People often come to him to find the criminal. He does not work in police though policemen sometimes apply to Holmes for a help in the investigation.
Sherlock Holmes takes lodgings at 221B Baker Street in London. Later John Watson joins him and after that their adventures start. We know little about the biographical data of Sherlock Holmes. We know that he has a brother Mycroft Homes. Holmes says that his ancestors were country squires. It is not known when he was born but according to some estimates he was born in 1854.
One of the most interesting facts about Sherlock Holmes is that a real person (Joseph Bell) was an inspiration for Sherlock Holmes. Arthur Conan Doyle worked with Joseph Bell. One more interesting fact is that Sherlock Holmes is in the list of Guinness World Records as the most portrayed movie character in history.

In fact, there are many screen versions of the books about Sherlock Holmes and many actors play this role. In my opinion, best of all, the role of Sherlock Holmes was played by Vasily Livanov who played in Soviet films about the detective and Benedict Cumberbatch who played in BBC series “Sherlock”.
In the 1880s a young doctor sat waiting for new patients who never came. To pass the time, he wrote stories about a man who was very good at solving crimes. These stories were so popular that the doctor decided to give up medicine and become a writer instead. The doctor was Arthur Conan Doyle and his' creation was Sherlock Holmes.
Holmes and his famous friend Doctor Watson shared rooms at 221b Baker Street.
Their landlady was the long-suffering Mrs. Hudson. She had to put up with strange visitors, revolver practice indoors, chemical experiments and late-time violin playing.
In 1990, a museum was at last opened at 221b Baker Street, though it should have happened long ago. After all, 221b Baker Street is the worlds most famous address and people have been writing to it for more than 100 years.
In The Sherlock Holmes' Museum you step back a hundred years in time. It is unique. There is no modern virtual reality, but it is all virtually real. There are no horrors, no mummies or hidden corpses, no wax figures. Even so, the atmosphere of this quiet house is electric. You have a feeling as if the great detective had just left the room for a moment with Dr. Watson, and Mrs. Hudson is somewhere in the backrooms, and you'll see her entering the room with a tray of tea cups.
Everything in the museum reminds us of the stories we know so well. It is filled with things which Holmes and Watson would have had - Holmes' violin, his deerstalker and pipe, the Persian slipper in which he kept his tobacco, unanswered letters pinned to the wall with a knife, his magnifying glass. Dr. Watson's diary contains hand-written notes and extracts from "The Hound of the Baskervilles".
The Sherlock Holmes' Museum is unlike other museums. Very little here is locked up in glass cases. You can sit in Holmes' s armchair by the fireplace, you can examine his things and put on his deerstalker. But please bring your own pipe to smoke!
People have been writing to this address for the last 100 years. Most letters come from the United States and many correspondents ask if Mr. Holmes can help them with some problem, such as finding a missing relative (or a pet). Greeting cards arrive at Christmas and on Holmes' birthday (he was born on January, 6th). Dr. Watson is not forgotten either.
