Big Ben is one of the most popular places of interest in London and symbols of England. Every year many people visit the capital of Great Britain to see it and take some photos with it in the background. It is thought that Big Ben is a high tower with a very big clock, but that’s not really true.
In fact, this tower is called Saint Stephens Tower, but people, even those who live in the UK, are used to calling it "Big Ben." Actually, Big Ben is the huge bell inside the building. Its weight is about thirteen tons and it rings every hour daily: once at one o'clock, twice at two o'clock and so on. However, people who live near the tower can hear at New Year’s Night how the bell strikes thirteen. It’s considered to be the biggest bell ever made in the country. The bell was firstly used in 1859 and was cracked soon because of the heavy hammer, which struck too strong. After this situation the hammer was changed, but that crack is still there.
There are many hypotheses for the origin of the name “Big Ben”. The most popular one suggests that the bell was named after Sir Benjamin Hall, who was responsible for the installation. Some of people say he was really tall and that’s why this bell is called big, but the majority believe it is called Big because of its size.
Big Ben is one of the best-known landmarks in Europe. Nowadays the word Big Ben connects the bell, the clock and the tower at the same time. The tower is closed to the general public, but people with a "special interest" might offer an excursion for additional payment.

The Elizabeth Tower, commonly called Big Ben, is among London's most iconic landmarks. It was built in 1859. Technically, Big Ben is the name given to the massive bell inside the tower. It weighs more than 13 tons.
The Elizabeth Tower stands 96 metres tall and has 11 floors. There are 334 steps to climb up to the belfry. Dials of the clock are seven metres in diameter. An hour hand is 2.8m in length; a minute hand is 4.3m .
The latin words under the clockface read Domine Salvam Fac Reginam Nostram Victoriam Primam, which means "O Lord, keep safe our Queen Victoria the First".
You can tell when parliament is in session by looking at the clock face. A special light above the clock faces is illuminated when parliament is in session.
The 150th anniversary of the Elizabeth Tower was celebrated in 2009. Formerly known as the Clock Tower, the structure was renamed the Elizabeth Tower in 2012 .
The tower is recognised all over the world. It is one of the most prominent symbols of the United Kingdom. It is often used in the establishing shot of films set in London.

The Thames is not a long river. It is three hundred and thirty kilometres long and it runs into the sea. The English people call it “the Father of London”. London began on the Thames. When we go in a ship up the Thames we pass under London Bridge, the Tower Bridge and others. There is a museum of old ships on the Thames. These ships are from the history of Great Britain. One of these ships, the “Discovery”, went to the South Pole in 1901 — 1904.
If we go down the Thames we pass the port of London and get to Greenwich — a very old town. We can see the place where the Greenwich Meridian passes.

The Houses of Parliament is a very large building which stands near the Thames. There are two tall towers at the corners of the building and one of them is the Clock Tower.
The English people built the tower and the clock in 1858. The clock has four faces and a very big loud bell. The bell weighs 13 tons. The man in charge of the building was Sir Benjamin Hall. This man was very tall, and the workers and his friends called him Big Ben. So they called the bell Big Ben too. Sometimes people call the clock and the Clock Tower Big Ben.
The people of London who live near the Houses of Parliament can hear the sound of the bell every hour. Other people hear it on the radio. On New Year’s night people come to the Clock Tower to see the New Year in.

Big Ben is one of the most famous tourist attractions in London. The name of the clock-tower refers to the huge bell that is situated in the tower. The tower is a part of the Palace of Westminster that is situated by the river Thames.
Nowadays, Big Ben is a national symbol which delights the eye of any citizen and tourist. The big clock officially started working on 31 May 1859. It is said that the monument was named after Sir Benjamin Hall who controlled the work of the bell.
In course of time Big Ben changed its function. Once it used to be a prison. During the Second World War in 1941 the main part of the Houses of Parliament was destroyed but the clock-tower remained and continued to keep time. The sound of the clock even became a symbol of hope during the war.
Recently, for the sixtieth anniversary of the Queen’s Elizabeth reign the Parliament decided to give her grace Big Ben as a gift. It was officially called the “Elizabeth Tower” but then the name was changed to the “Clock Tower”. Consequently, today “Big Ben” is only the name that is spread among public.
None the less, Big Ben is well-known to everyone, even to those who have never been to London. The tower is a symbol of London that is loved both by citizens and tourists. There are a lot of souvenirs that look like Big Ben. The Clock Tower is closed for visitors but it is possible to arrange for a visit to the top of it.
