Pupils: Fine, thank you. And you?

Teacher: I’m OK too. Today our task is to get acquainted with some other natural wonders of the world using multimedia technologies. I know that you have already learnt about some of them, so we will revise it again. I hope our lesson will be useful and entertaining. So, let’s start.

Teacher: Firstly, let’s find out what the word “wonder” means?

Wonder is a feeling of strangeness, surprise usually combined with admiration, that is produced by something unusually fine or beautiful, or something unexpected or new to one’s experience.

Teacher: There are a lot of interesting facts about Ancient Wonders of the World. Look at the statements on the board, read the statements, listen to the text and say if the statements are true, false or not mentioned in the text.( слайд 4, презентация )

The wonders of the ancient world were created to attract tourists from Ancient Greece.

It was necessary for people from the Middle Ages to see the Seven Wonders.

The list which contains the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World was made in Ancient Greece.

Nowadays people can see only one wonder of those seven.

The archaeologists are not quite sure that the Hanging Gardens really existed.

The Mausoleum of Maussollos was about 140 feet high.

The English word mausoleum originated from the first name of a king.

II. Acquaintance with the seven natural wonders of the world ( знакомство с семью чудесами природы ) ( слайд 5, презентация ) – 1 мин .

Teacher: There are many magnificent places on the Earth with origins that sometimes can’t be explained. The more we look around us, the more wonders we see in the world. I offer you my list of such natural wonders:

Grand Canyon ( Northwest Arizona, the USA).

Great Barrier Reef ( the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland in northeast Australia).

Valley of Geysers ( Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia)

Mount Everest ( on the border of Tibet and Nepal, in the central Himalayas).

Aurora ( in both hemispheres of the Earth, in its upper atmosphere).

Paricutin volcano ( Paricutin village, Mexico).

Victoria Falls ( on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe).

III. Studying new material (T – CL)

Teacher: Now we’ll listen to our interactive guides Tim and Moby who will tell us about the highest mountain in the world Everest, its location, shape, origin, the first people who climbed it, etc. While watching the flash about Everest, pay attention to the details as you are supposed to answer some questions.

Teacher: We’ll begin with the revision of some words and phrases. Your task is to match the given words with their similar meanings using the interactive board.

Glacier – a large mass of ice which moves slowly down a mountain valley.

Collision – an accident in which two or more people or vehicles hit each other while moving in different directions.

Sacred – very important or greatly respected.

Mantle something that covers, hides or surrounds something else.

Sherpa – an ethnic group who lived in the Himalayas for centuries.

Expedition – a long and carefully organized journey, especially to a dangerous or unfamiliar place or the people that make this journey.

Avalanche – a large mass of snow, ice and rocks that falls down the side of a mountain.

Summit – the highest point of a hill or mountain.

Where is it located?

What shape is the mountain?

When did Everest begin to form?

How did it form?

What are the biggest dangers of climbing Everest?

Who are Sherpas?

Why didn’t Sherpas try to climb Everest until 20-th century?

What were the reasons of their success?

Teacher: During the lesson we’ve learnt a lot of information about the natural wonders of our planet, but according to above mentioned map, you are supposed to tell us about other wonders of the world. So it’s your turn to tell us your wonders of the world and then we’ll discuss your reports.

Teacher: Thank you very much for the lesson. Today we have learnt about seven natural wonders of the world. You also worked with multimedia technologies including inter active board. You have done various assignments, which, I think, enlarge your vocabulary, develop your practical skills. So take care of our nature, get surprise at the beauty of our world.

Принципы отбора материала:

  1. Доступность. Степень сложности материалов определяется уровнем владения учащимися основами английской грамматики, базового словарного состава и способностью использовать английский язык как средство познания мира.
  2. Социальная значимость. Материал является необходимым для знакомства с историей и техническими достижениями страны изучаемого языка и своей страны, для формирования мировоззрения, совершенствования владения языком и для последующего оперирования полученными знаниями.

I. Введение в тему.

Учитель: Today we will speak about men-made Wonders of the world.

When we think of the wonders of the world, we usually think of the seven ancient wonders of the world described by Philo of Byzantium and the ancient Greeks. We might wonder why these were chosen when we think of other wonders that seem more, well, wonderful.

Why seven, you might ask? Seven is a holy and sacred number in many of the world's religions. In Christianity, we think of seven days of creation (and of the week), seven virtues, seven deadly sins. Other religions use seven in their worship and practice. Seven is believed to be a perfect number. So the ancients used seven and so we keep the tradition.

Listing the seven wonders of the world began during the time of the Greeks. The first lists were for travelers of that time, listing man-made objects of particular architectural or sculptural note.

Учитель: Today there are many such lists, including the Seven Modern Wonders, the Seven Wonders of the Medieval World, the Seven Natural Wonders, the Seven Wonders of Medicine, etc. There are many other such lists; none are definitive, of course.

  • Builders could have used stone tools to shape the stones (Stonehenge)
  • Workers had to blast through the stone and use strong machines. (Panama Canal)
  • Russian soldiers were drafted into building. (Trans-Siberian Railway)
  • The construction gave employment jobless workers during the Depression. (Hoover Dam)
  • Workers bored through the ground from both ends. (English Channel or the Chunnel)

Hoover Dam was built in 1882-89, 1904-14 on Isthmus of Panama
Panama Canal was built in 1891-1916 in Russia, Siberia, from Moscow in Europe to Vladivostok on the Asian Pacific Coast.
English Channel built in about 3000-1000 B.C. in Wiltshire, England.
Stonehenge was built 1931-1936 on Colorado Riverat the boarder of Nevada and Arizona (USA
Trans-Siberian Railway was built in 1987-1994 under the English Channel from Folkestone, England, to Coquelles, France.

Yes, you are right about wonders of the world. I know that you’ve already learnt something about it, so we will revise it again and widen our knowledge about it. I hope our lesson will be interesting and usеful.

The planet we live on is full of wonders. We are going to talk about ancient, wonders .

Let’s find out what the word “wonder “means?

(The possible answer: It is a feeling of amazement and admiration, caused by something beautiful, remarkable, or unfamiliar. Or : It is a person or thing regarded as very good, remarkable, or effective:

T. What makes a wonder a wonder?

(The possible answer:

And now let’s discuss on two types of ancient, wonders.

Look, to the right there are two wallpapers on the wall: “7 ancient wonders of the world “and “New 7 wonders of the world”. Why are they called ancient wonders and new wonders?

(The possible answer: They are called ancient wonders because they haven’t survived to present days. They are called new wonders because they have survived to present days.)

T: Why were only 7 masterpieces considered as wonders? Why not 5 or 6?

(The possible answer: The number 7 was chosen because the Greeks believed it to be the symbol of perfection and plenty. This number means wisdom and brings happiness).

T: What else do you know about the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World?

P:The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World is a listing of notable objects built between 3000 BC and AD 476.

P Through the years, many lists have been made, but all the lists of ancient wonders included only objects MADE BY MAN and considered special because of their GREAT SIZE.

T: You know, we live in the largest country in the world. And, it goes without saying, there are also many wonders in Russia. All of them are created by man. And I would like to show a very short film about Russia.

The question will be. What ancient architectural wonders are mentioned in the film?
